Set sail on the MV Explorer, the ocean liner that serves as the “floating campus” of the renowned Semester at Sea study abroad program, for an Enrichment Voyage exploring the coastal cultures of Spain, Monaco, Italy, Morocco, Portugal and France. Onboard the ship, take part in interactive lectures and pre-port briefings led by academic experts and enjoy being part of a university-like community. Explore Barcelona and Lisbon on exclusive Road Scholar field trips and discover remaining ports independently or on field excursions of your choice.




Activity Particulars

Walking up to one mile per day; some uneven terrain and stairs. You may choose field trips that require more strenuous physical activity.



This voyage is designed for the independent traveler and is less structured than our traditional Adventures Afloat programs. Road Scholar will provide a field trip exclusively for our participants in one port. In the remaining ports you will have the freedom to choose your own field excursions based on your interests and preferred physical activity level, or you can choose to explore on your own.

Day 1: Overnight flight from the U.S.A.


Days 2-3: Arrival Barcelona (Spain) / embark MV Explorer:

Arrive in Barcelona, where you enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant before an orientation session led by your Road Scholar group leader. The next morning, set out on an expert-led field trip that highlights Barcelona’s outstanding architecture including Antoni Gaudí’s famously unfinished Sagrada Família cathedral. Delve into the art of Pablo Picasso at the Picasso Museum, boasting more than 3,500 works by the painter. Board the ship to begin your voyage in the late afternoon. Lodging: Comfortable hotel.

Days 6-7: Florence (Italy)

Experience Lisbon on an exclusive Road Scholar field trip that focuses on the era when the cosmopolitan Portuguese capital was the seat of the world’s last great colonial empire. Discover Belém Tower, a great symbol of the Age of Discoveries, the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery and more. Enjoy some free time to explore this lovely city independently in the afternoon.

MV Explorer

Built in 2002 by the renowned Blohm & Voss shipbuilders of Germany, the MV Explorer is described by Maritime Telecommunications Network as one of the safest ships afloat. Learning amenities include nine state-of-the-art classrooms, a library, computer and multimedia labs and a student union. The ship also has a pool, gym and wellness center.

 MV Explorer
Type: Cruise Ship
  Description: MV Explorer, built in 2002 for the now-defunct Royal Olympic Cruises, is used most of the year for the non-profit Institute for Shipboard Education’s “Semester at Sea” program. Acquired by the Institute after Royal Olympic's bankruptcy in 2004, the ship has the distinction of being one of the fastest seagoing passenger vessels in the world, able to maintain a speed of 30 knots. Despite its modern architecture, the ship enjoys classic lines and has a following among enthusiasts who will be pleased that a new partnership with has opened the ship to the cruising public during semester breaks.

  Room amenities: All staterooms are equipped with a refrigerator, safe, phone, closed circuit tv with movies and music and a hair dryer.
  Facility amenities: CLINIC The Medical Team is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating total patient care for the students, faculty, staff and assisting with the officers and crew aboard the MV Explorer. The Physician is assisted by a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner and one Registered Nurse, as well as, a Crew Doctor and a Crew Nurse. DINING HALLS The dining halls are located on decks 5 and 6. The Aquamarine Dining Hall, on Deck 5, is the ship's formal dining room. GYM A fitness room with treadmills, elliptical machines, and stairmasters is located on Deck 7. UNION This space is used as a large classroom and for ship wide events such as pre-ports, lectures, shows, movies, and more. Events can be videotaped and broadcast to all classrooms and cabins. LIBRARY The library contains about 9,000 volumes specifically tailored to international study and travel, and to the curriculum of each voyage. There is an extensive map collection containing physical, political, topographical and historical maps. Also onboard is a significant collection of videos for educational and recreational purposes. HUDSON COMPUTER LAB The Computer Lab is available for academic use on a 24-hour basis. Each computer is configured with Windows XP, Microsoft Office XP, and USB ports. The lab is also equipped with several high volume Laser printers that are accessible from any of the computers inside the lab, as well as from individual laptops via wireless connection.

  Transportation to site: All participants who arranged their air travel through Road Scholar Travel Services, and are arriving on Thursday, April 25, will be provided with a transfer from the Barcelona International Airport (BCN) to the program hotel.

  Location:  mv Explorer - At Sea
  Transportation from site: All participants who are departing on the program end date will be provided a transfer from the cruise port to Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport.

 Morning: This morning your local expert will discuss Barcelona’s beautiful landmarks, architecture and history during a panoramic city drive. Stop at the "Templo Expiatiorio de La Sagrada Familia" for a look at the interior of this remarkable cathedral. Originally conceived in a modest orthodox neo-Gothic style, the project changed direction and scale under Gaudi, who used the opportunity to reflect his own spiritual and nationalist feelings, spending most of the rest of his working life in the project

 Morning: Enjoy an exclusive Road Scholar excursion. This morning disembark from the cruiseship in Lisbon, Portugal. Board the coach for a panoramic tour of Lisbon including the Tower of Belem, Discoveries Monument, Monastery of Jeronimos, and Barrio Alto. Cosmopolitan Lisbon was the center of the world's last great colonial empire. Today the city nostalgically reveres its imperial past while adapting to Portugal's role as a member of the European Economic Community. Although located on the Atlantic coast, Lisbon has the soul of a Mediterranean city with Moorish castles, pastel and white buildings, orange-tiled roofs and luminous blue skies. Set amid the hills and valleys of the northern shore of the River Tagus, it is one of the loveliest capitals in the world.
