Discover the remote Apostle Islands, 22 Lake Superior isles (only one of them inhabited) off the northern tip of Wisconsin. Learn about the history of shipwrecks in this area and board a boat to discover the historic lighthouses that guide ships and boats safely through the sometimes-rough waters. In Bayfield, the small fishing town where this program is based, a National Park Service Ranger tells you more about the environment of this area including which wildflowers are in bloom.

• Ride the ferry to Madeline Island (the only inhabited island in the chain) to explore Big Bay State Park with its pristine barrier beach and boardwalk.

Driving Directions
  Duluth/Superior Take Hwy 2 east. Just outside Superior, you will see a Bayfield-Port Wing sign for Hwy 13. This is the scenic route. Once in Bayfield, this turns into 1st St. The Hotel is on this street by the marina, on your left. You can also stay on Hwy 13, drive through Washburn into Bayfield. Once in Bayfield, 13 turns into 6th St. Turn right on Rittenhouse Ave. Inn is at the end of the road by the marina on your right.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival at the beautiful Bayfield Inn and be greeted by your Road Scholar Coordinator. Dinner/Orientation
(Sunday, June 9)
   
 Afternoon: After hotel check-in, please register with the Road Scholar coordinator by 4:00PM to pick up your arrival packet containing your updated program information.
 Dinner: Dinner will be catered by the finest caterer in the area and will be held in the hotel restaurant/meeting room. We have worked hard to create menus with dishes that are both healthy and nutritious as well as tasty. If you have special dietary requests, please by sure to advise us prior to the program. Our caterer will let us know if they can accomodate your request. Dinner is an opportunity to become acquainted with your fellow participants and to discover what you share beyond a love of lifelong learning.
 Evening: After dinner we will have an orientation meeting. We will review the materials in your packet including the schedule and answer any questions you may have about the program.

Day 2: Enjoy lectures about the Bayfield Area History, presentations from the National Park Service and the US Coast Guard.
(Monday, June 10)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be in the meeting room, with a gorgeous view of the public pier on Lake Superior, Madeline Island and the sunrise.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: A retired historian from the National Park Service will talk about Bayfield Area History and entertain us with a beautiful slide presentation
 Lunch: Lunch will be in the hotel dining room.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: We will take a walk through town and visit the historic National Park Service Building. We will hear a lecture on the Apostle Islands as well as the wildlife and vegetation that inhabit those islands.
 Dinner: Another delicious and nutritious meal!
 Evening: FIELD TRIP: After dinner we will have a presentation from some of the staff at the US Coast Guard. Then we will walk to the Coast Guard Station itself for a brief tour.

Day 3: We take a 3 hour Apostle Island cruise and then come back and learn about shipwrecks among the islands. End the day with an evening presentation and tour of the Bayfield Heritage Center.
(Tuesday, June 11)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room - another great meal.
 Morning: FIELD TRIP: We will take a three hour boat tour with the Apostle Islands Cruise line. We tour by historic lighthouses and get a close up view of the sea caves in the area.
 Lunch: We will arrive back at the city pier after our field trip on the research vessel and enjoy a delicious lunch in the hotel dining room.
 Afternoon: PRESENTATION: A presentation about shipwrecks among the Apostle Islands will be given by the retired director of the Lake Superior Maritime Museum. You will get to see and hear stories about some of the may ships that went down in and around the Apostle Island. This will highlight the importance of the Coast Guard.
 Dinner: Dinner will be back at the hotel.
 Evening: FIELD TRIP: We will walk up to the Bayfield Heritage Center for a special presentation.

Day 4: Enjoy a ferry ride to the beautiful Madeline Island. You'll be treated to a bus tour of the island and museum with a lecture on the fur trade.
(Wednesday, June 12)
   
 Breakfast: Another delicious and hearty breakfast in the hotel dining room.
 Morning: FIELD TRIP: We will take the ferry to Madeline Island. Once on the island, we will visit Big Bay City Park and walk along the barrier beach. This is an incredible stretch of pristine sand that Mother Nature is constantly changing.
 Lunch: We will enjoy another wonderful meal on the island.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: We are treated to a bus tour of the island with various stops along the way including an artisan shop and church. We'll learn from a native how they thrive in summer and how they survive in the winter.
 Dinner: Back at the hotel dining room for another great dinner.
 Evening: Free time.

Day 5: Program wraps up with guest lecturer in the morning and boxed lunches to go.

 Breakfast: A final delicious breakfast in the hotel dining room - your'e going to miss this when you get home!
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Our retired historian from the National Park Service will be back to entertain us with stories of the people who settled this incredible area and their trials and tribulations. Another beautiful slide presentation will give you a glimpse of what those folks encountered and how they lived in this wild, beautiful and sometimes scary place.
 Lunch: Boxed lunches to go and bid farewell to all!
