Santa Cruz

On the north side of Monterey Bay, 74 miles south of San Francisco, Santa Cruz is a peaceful, beachside community with an offbeat spirit, a penchant for the eccentric, and a colorful boardwalk that is one of the last of its kind on the West Coast.



Accommodations
Retreat center on 170 acres of redwood forest and meadowland. Private baths, sauna, outdoor pool and massage therapy available. No smoking or alcohol on-site. Delicious organic vegetarian cuisine. Exquisite temples, prayer wheels, and bell on-site.

Breige Walbridge

Breige Gormley Walbridge has been the Road Scholar program coordinator and group leader at Land of Medicine Buddha since 1999. During this time, she has organized and hosted approximately 200 programs. Breige is known for her warmth, hospitality and organizational skills.
 
Radha Vignola

Radha Vignola has been a yoga instuctor for more than 20 years. She has keen expertise in teaching the stress-reduction section in the Dean Ornisch program for reversing heart disease. Radha has also been a favorite instructor at Road Scholar programs, in local classes and at yoga retreats.
 
Ingrid Mednis

Ingrid Mednis has taught numerous classes in herbology and frequently leads nature walks. She has been a docent at the University of California, Santa Cruz organic farm project for about 15 years and currently works in Henry Cowell State Park.
 
Venerable Drimay

Venerable Losang Drimay leads regular meditations, retreats, classes, including Road Scholar programs, at Land of Medicine Buddha in Soquel, Calif. A California native, Ven. Losang has been studying and practicing with centers in the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) since 1984, receiving hundreds of hours of classroom instruction from the many qualified lamas and senior teachers that frequent the Dharma centers. Following her ordination as a Buddhist nun in 1991, Ven. Losang spent a year in India, studying Dharamsala. Upon her return to the U.S., she began working at the Vajrapani Institute in Boulder Creek, and later lived at Land of Calm Abiding, an isolated retreat center, carrying out some of the meditation assignments given to her by Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche. She also served as a resident teacher at the Ocean of Compassion Buddhist Center in Campbell. Ven. Losang holds a B.A. in Asian studies and has traveled extensively in Asia.

Day 1: Arrival and Check In/Orientation

Day 2: Movement class. Meditation class. Nature Walk. Aromatherapy class
(Monday, June 24)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the dining room.
 Morning: Movement class (Yoga). After a break, learn meditation techniques, with mindfulness meditations and visualization, for deep inner peace and relaxation.
 Lunch: Lunch in dining room.
 Afternoon: Take an expert-led nature walk in a majestic redwood forest, learning about redwood ecology, wild herbs and birds. After some free time, enjoy a snack in the dining room, then take in a lecture and demonstration on aromatherapy. Learn how to use organic essential oils at home in many simple ways, including baths, steam inhalations, compresses and massage blends.
 Dinner: Dinner in dining room.
 Evening: Documentary film or lecture.

Day 3: Movement Class. Meditation class. Energy massage.
(Tuesday, June 25)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in dining room.
 Morning: Experience a Qigong movement class and learn about energy and flexibility. Qigong and self-acupressure will move Qi, or vital energy, smoothly through your meridians and bring you to a state of relaxation with gentle physical movements and mindful breathing. After a break, learn meditation techniques, with mindfulness meditations and visualization, for deep inner peace and relaxation.
 Lunch: Lunch in dining room.
 Afternoon: After some free time and a snack in the dining room, take in a lecture and demonstration on healing energy massage, for balance and wellness.
 Dinner: Dinner in dining room.
 Evening: Documentary film or lecture.

Day 4: Movement Class. Meditation class. Herbology.
(Wednesday, June 26)

 Lunch: Lunch in dining room.
 Afternoon: After some free time and a snack in the dining room enjoy a lecture on Herbology.
 Dinner: Dinner in dining room.
 Evening: Documentary film or lecture.

Day 5: Movement Class. Meditation.Herbology
