Experience the geology, human history and scenic vistas of the 2,000-foot-deep Salt River Canyon, sometimes called the "Mini-Grand Canyon." Uncover the history of the Salados, a 14th-century cliff-dwelling people, and of the Apaches who hid in the canyons in the 1800s. Learn about the Salt River as a modern-day border between the San Carlos Apache Reservation and the White Mountain Apaches. View petroglyphs and a pottery demonstration, and enjoy a narrated steamboat voyage on Canyon Lake.

Day 1: Check-In and Program Registration/Orientation
(Sunday, October 13)
   
 Afternoon: Please arrive at the hotel to register at 4:30pm. Check into your room at the front desk and then register with Road Scholar staff in the Main lobby. You will then have until 6:00 PM to settle into your room.
 Dinner: Meals unless otherwise indicated may be at the hotel or a local restaurant. Please arrive at the time indicated on your itinerary.
 Evening: After registration we will have orientation. This will provide you with information about the hotel, program itinerary, instructors, venues and on site staff. This is also a good opportunity to ask questions!

Day 2: Salado People Class/Pottery Demonstration/Geology Class
(Monday, October 14)
   
 Breakfast: All breakfasts are deluxe continental. Come down by the time indicated on the itinerary, just be sure to allow enough time to arrive promptly for the morning activity!
 Morning: Uncover the history of the 14th century cliff dwellers the Salados and the 1800's Apaches who hid in the canyon from the Calvary. Today the river is a border for the San Carlos Apache Reservation to the South and the White Mountain Apaches to the North
 Lunch: Explore the rustic, savory cusine of Arizona with this dinner on your own.
 Afternoon: Pottery Demonstration with Matt Thomas Geology Class with Jeff Wiles
 Dinner: Meals unless otherwise indicated may be at the hotel or a local restaurant.
 Evening: Geology Class with Jeff Wiles

Day 3: Petroglyphs/Roosevelt Dam/Besh-Ba-Gowah
(Tuesday, October 15)
   
 Breakfast: All breakfasts are deluxe continental. Come down by the time indicated on the itinerary, just be sure to allow enough time to arrive promptly for the morning activity!
 Morning: Visit Roosevelt Dam with an expert. Once the world's tallest masonry dam, this structure is named after President Theodore Roosevelt, who was instrumental in approval of the Federal Reclamation Act of 1902, and who dedicated the original dam in March 1911. Roosevelt Dam is unique in the way it was originally constructed. It was the world's largest "cyclopean-masonry" dam, a Greco-Roman style of building that uses huge, irregular blocks. It is now covered by new concrete.
 Morning: View Petroglyphs at "A" Mountain.
 Lunch: Box Lunch
 Afternoon: Visit Besh-Ba-Gowah Park and Museum in Globe AZ. It has an ethnobotanical garden and is one of the largest single sites of SW archaelogical collections

Day 4: Tonto National Park/Desert Botanical Gardens/Steamboat Voyage
(Wednesday, October 16)
   
 Breakfast: All breakfasts are deluxe continental. Come down by the time indicated on the intinerary, just be sure to allow enough time to arrive promptly for the morning activity!
 Morning: Desert Botanical Gardens, one of only 44 botanical gardens accredited by the American Association of Museums, this one-of-a-kind museum showcases 50 acres of beautiful outdoor exhibits. Home to 139 rare, threatened and endangered plant species from around the world, the Garden offers interesting and inspiring experiences to more than 250,000 visitors each year.
 Morning: Situated within rugged terrain in the northeastern part of the Sonoran Desert, these well-preserved cliff dwellings were occupied during the 13th, 14th, and early 15th centuries.Take a field trip to Tonto National Park, learn when, where and how to gather and process common desert plants. Taste foods prepared with plants such as ocotillo, prickly pear, saguaro, mesquite and other native vegetation.
 Lunch: Lunch will either be a delicious meal at the hotel or a savory dish at a favorite local restaurant.
 Afternoon: Take a boat trip with a naturalist! Sit back and enjoy the scenery as the Dolly Steamboat cruises the waterways along the canyon walls. Admire the breathtaking native flora and wildlife as your captain recounts tales of legend and lore.

 Morning: The internationally acclaimed Heard Museum is one of the best places to experience the myriad of cultures and art of Native Americans of the Southwest. The museum's 10 spacious exhibit galleries and beautiful outdoor courtyards feature outstanding traditional and contemporary Native American art.
 Lunch: Lunch will either be a delicious meal at the hotel or a savory dish at a favorite local restaurant.
