Sue Lombardi

Susanna Lombardi is an art historian and educator whose career in college teaching spanned over 25 years. In addition to her role as a faculty member at Dominican College, she served as the associate director of the graduate humanities program. She completed her graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, and is the author of the book, "Behold!"
 
Michael Graham

A professor of political science at San Francisco State University, Dr. Michael Graham has taught at numerous educational institutions including Oklahoma State University, U.C. Santa Barbara, Northwestern University and Loyola University of Chicago. His major research and teaching interests are in the fields of public law and American political institutions. Dr. Graham holds a Ph.D. in political science from U.S. Santa Barbara.
 
Richard Aldag

Richard Aldag is an active composer whose works have been commissioned and performed by numerous symphonies, including the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and the Shanghai Symphony. He served as executive director of the Napa Valley Symphony from 2006-2012, and prior to this, served as executive director of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. As an educator, Richard has served on the faculties of several schools, including Fordham University and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music.
 
Bonnie Weiss

Bonnie Weiss has served as writer, producer and director for ten Bay Area cabaret shows, including producing the work of Stephen Sondheim. She holds a bachelor’s in theater education and is founder and president of Musical Theater Lovers United, a club for Broadway and Hollywood music buffs. She currently teaches musical theater history and appreciation at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and writes for Stage Directions, a magazine for theater educators, and for The Sondheim Review.
 
Maureen O'Brien

Maureen O'Brien earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees at Dominican University in San Rafael, California. She has taught art history courses at Sonoma State University, Dominican University and the College of Marin. Currently, she guest lectures at Dominican University and the College of Marin.
 
John Rothmann

Regarded as a scholar or modern Republicanism, John Rothmann is a political and foreign policy consultant who specializes in issues of the U.S., Middle East and former Soviet Union. Among his many roles, he has served as director of the Nixon Collection at Whittier College, as chief of staff to Senator Milton Marks and as field representative to Senator Quentin Kopp. John has spoken at numerous campuses in the U.S., Canada and Israel, and taught at the University of San Francisco.
 
Rand Richards

Rand Richards is a San Francisco historian. Rand has written three books: “Historic San Francisco: A Concise History and Guide”, “Historic Walks in San Francisco: 18 Trails Through the City’s Past” and “Mud, Blood, and Gold: San Francisco in 1849.” He has a B.A. in history from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from San Francisco State University. In 2005, Rand received the San Francisco History Association’s Oscar Lewis Award for his contributions to knowledge of San Francisco history.
 
Mark Levy

Mark Levy has performed and taught around the country for 30 years at synagogues, Jewish community centers, Lehrhaus Judaica, Workmen's Circle and other Jewish groups. He has appeared throughout the country and abroad as a singer and lecturer who specializes in traditional Judaic folk music, Jewish humor, and Klezmer history and theory. “Nu, You Think That's Funny?” was developed in a Catskill hotel one summer and includes jokes, film and audio clips that chronicle 100 years of Jewish jokesters.
 
Seth Shostak

Seth Shostak is the senior astronomer at the SETI (Search for Extraterrestial Intelligence) Institute. For much of his career, Seth conducted radio astronomy research on galaxies, and currently hosts the SETI Institute’s science radio show, “Big Picture Science.” He is the author of “Confessions of an Alien Hunter: A Scientist’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.” Seth holds a degree in physics from Princeton and a doctorate in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology.
 
Jerry Frohmader

Jerry Frohmader is a composer, performer, teacher and arts administrator, whose compositions have been performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. As assistant dean in the School of Music at the California Institute of Arts, Jerry composed a musical score for the opera "Victory Over the Sun" by Malevich. As a musician, he has performed with the New Jersey Symphony and on the Jerry Lewis Telethon, and has been featured on the ABC News, CNN Travel and the PBS program SPARK.
 
Lynn Miller

Lynn Ruth Miller began her career as a standup comedian at the age of 70, but has long been an author and entertainer. At the age of 27, she starred in her own CBS television show, and her current newspaper column, “Thoughts While Walking the Dog,” has been gathered into two books. Lynn Ruth has a one woman show, “Farewell to the Tooth Fairy,” and frequently performs in comedy productions. She is the host of two local television programs, “What’s Hot Between the Covers” and “Paint with Lynn.”.
 
Bruce Bramlett

Rev. Bruce Bramlett is an ordained Episcopal priest, Christian scholar and activist on several social issues. He received his theological education at Union Theological Seminary in New York and his Masters of Divinity degree at the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. Rev. Bramlett has been a frequent lecturer in synagogues and churches on issues of Jewish history, Christian theology, Holocaust studies, Jewish/ Christian history, antisemitism and Israeli/ Palestinian relations.

Program registration is from 3:30-4:30PM. Orientation begins at 4:30PM followed by dinner at 5:30PM. Introductions are after dinner. You will be staying at Hilton San Francisco Airport Bayfront that night.

Day 1:
(Thursday, June 6)
   
 Afternoon: PROGRAM REGISTRATION takes place in the hallway outside of the meeting room. Check in to the hotel at the lobby desk; you will be directed to the meeting room where the Road Scholar program is being held.

ORIENTATION: Begins before dinner. We'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, any other administrative issues, and answer your questions. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes, we will notify you as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding.

Menus are contracted for the program and are designed to offer balanced, healthy meals for the participants. In addition to the regular Road Scholar meal plan, this hotel offers a vegetarian meal option. Unfortunately, there are no other special meal options. Participants with special dietary needs should be prepared to avoid certain foods or supplement the regular meal plan as needed.

 Evening: INTRODUCTIONS: Participants introduce themselves to the rest of the group.

Enjoy the remainder of the evening getting to know your fellow participants and discovering what you share beyond a love of lifelong learning.

Day 2: Field Trip to Legion of Honor in San Francisco for "Impressionists on the Water" Exhibit
(Friday, June 7)

Note: Up to two hours of walking through museum at casual pace. See field trip information above.

In conjunction with the 2013 America’s Cup in San Francisco, a collection of Impressionist artworks will be on view at the Palace of the Legion of Honor. You will examine images of activities set on the waterways of 19th century France, including the popular pastimes of rowing and sailing, and explore the places chosen by these artists who settled and vacationed on the water.

 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Legion of Honor for Impressionists on the Water exhibit.

When you arrive at the museum, you have one hour of free time to explore the museum as well as step outside and see spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline and the Pacific Ocean.

You have a one hour docent-led visit through the Impressionists on the Water exhibit.

Day 3: Andrew Lloyd Webber/ Intriguing Politics of the Supreme Court

The Dead Sea Scrolls have intrigued and challenged both scholars and the public since their discovery 60 years ago. We look at the people who wrote the texts at Qumran, and what they say about Jewish life and thought and Christian origins.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the most dynamic composers of all times. We look at his work, from the rock beat of "Jesus Christ Superstar," the evocative “Evita,” the haunting melodies of "Phantom of the Opera,” to the purr-fection of “Cats.”

Day 4: The Glorious Music of Mozart/ Intriguing Politics of the Supreme Court

Since he first charmed audiences at the age of six with performances in his home town of Salzburg, Mozart has captured the minds and hearts of every generation of concertgoers. By uncovering the truth behind the mysteries and complications that surround his life (and death), Mozart and his music will bring greater joy than ever.

Mark has been performing and singing since birth according to his mother, a singer of show tunes and opera herself. He sings songs from all over the world as well as the American songbook and folk music of many traditions, and accompanies himself on guitar. His travel schedule includes coast to coast tours, Europe, and Road Scholar programs in many locations for the past 20 years.

  Hiller Aviation Museum

Hiller Aviation Museum, located six miles from the hotel, is dedicated to the dreams of flight, looking back into the history of aviation while exploring its future. The restoration shop, with its large picture windows, allows the visitor to witness the ongoing restoration process. The museum collection includes many aircraft exhibits. Vintage and futuristic aircraft, prototypes, photographic displays, and models are on display. There's an extensive gift shop on the premises. The museum is adjacent to the San Carlos Airport where you can watch commuter planes take off and land. Open 10am-5pm daily.
