Learn about the American Chestnut tree and the research being done to restore this classic of the eastern hardwood forest, one of the most important trees in its range before it was devastated by the chestnut blight. Join the cause of the American Chestnut Foundation, which is working to restore this giant tree by actively breeding American Chestnuts for disease resistance and encouraging research in biological control.




Highlights

• Assist in the process of aiding the American Chestnut’s comeback by performing disease inoculations of existing trees located at three research farms.
• Be a hands-on helper in the inoculation process, a precise exercise that requires teamwork among two or more participants.
• Enjoy a show at the world famous Barter Theatre, the state theatre of Virginia.



Activity Particulars

Walking 2-3 miles per day on rugged, hilly terrain. 4-6 hours per day of outdoor activity requiring bending, kneeling and possible use of orchard ladders.

Founded in 1778, this historic community in the Blue Ridge highlands has long been a center of culture and natural beauty, attracting visitors to its Depression-era Barter Theater and nearby recreational trails in the woodland hills.

Driving Directions
  From North via I-77 Take Interstate 77 south to Virginia. In Wytheville get on Interstate 81 South. Travel for approximately 50 miles on I-81. Take exit 22 (Enterprise Road). Turn right at the end of the exit ramp. Drive until you arrive at a stop sign and turn left onto Hillman Highway. The 4-H Center is approximately 1.5 miles on the left. The Dickenson Conference Center (2 story brick building) will be on the left. Turn left into the Dickenson Conference Center parking lot and proceed to the parking area at the back of the building (unless you are an RVer - then park in the front).

  From South via I-77 Take Interstate 77 north to Virginia. In Fort Chiswell get on Interstate 81 South. Travel for approximately 58 miles on I-81. Take exit 22 (Enterprise Road). Turn right at the end of the exit ramp. Drive until you arrive at a stop sign and turn left onto Hillman Highway. The 4-H Center is approximately 1.5 miles on the left. The Dickenson Conference Center (2 story brick building) will be on the left. Turn left into the Dickenson Conference Center parking lot and proceed to the parking area at the back of the building (unless you are an RVer - then park in the front).
  From South via I-81 Take Interstate I-81 North. Take exit 19 (Abingdon) and travel South on US Route 11 to the first stoplight (Hillman Highway). Turn right onto Hillman Highway. Travel approximately 1.5 miles. Dickenson Conference Center (2 story brick building) will be on your right. Turn right and proceed to the parking area in back of the building (unless you are an RVer - then park in the front). The Dickenson Conference Center is part of the larger Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center
Equipment Requirements: Comfortable clothing for working outdoors, rain gear, sunscreen, sun hat, work gloves. The site will provide galoshes and knee pads, but you may bring your own if you have them.

Day 1: Arrival and Registration/Program Orientation

 Arrive To: 3:00-5:00 pm registration at the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center
 Dinner: In the 4-H Center dining hall
 Evening: Overview of the American Chestnut Research Farm and the work they do. Introduction to the service that participants will complete during the week. Get acquainted.

Day 2: Service at the Research Farm/Welcome to Abingdon
(Monday, June 3)
   
 Breakfast: In 4-H Center dining hall
 Morning: Inoculation demonstration. Work in the field at the research farm.
 Lunch: Bagged lunch at the worksite
 Afternoon: Field work continues through early afternoon. Rest and free time during late afternoon.
 Dinner: in 4-H Center dining hall
 Evening: A guided walk through historic downtown Abingdon and/or a visit to one of the many Arts Centers in the area.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Service at the Research Farm/Evening performance by a local musician or musical group.
(Tuesday, June 4)
   
 Breakfast: In 4-H Center dining hall
 Morning: Continue inoculation work at the research farm
 Lunch: Bagged lunch at the worksite
 Afternoon: Field work continues through early afternoon. Rest and free time during late afternoon. An optional field trip to the local winery may be arranged
 Dinner: At the 4-H Center dining hall
 Evening: Enjoy a private musical performance by a local musician or musical group

Day 4: Service at the Research Farm/Barter Theatre
(Wednesday, June 5)
   
 Breakfast: At the 4-H Center dining hall
 Morning: Continue inoculation work at the research farm.
 Lunch: Bag lunch at the work site.
 Afternoon: Field work continues through early afternoon. Free time for the remainder of the afternoon.
 Dinner: At the 4-H Center dining hall
 Evening: Attend a performance at the world famous Barter Theatre, State Theatre of Virginia.

Day 5: Service at the Research Farm/Fine Dining
(Thursday, June 6)
   
 Breakfast: At the 4-H Center dining hall

 Afternoon: Field work continues through the early afternoon. Rest and free time for the remainder of the afternoon.
 Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 6: Program Wrap-Up/Check-out

 Breakfast: At the 4-H Center dining hall

 Afternoon: Program ends at 1:00 pm. Check-out between 1:00-3:00 pm.
