Go back in time as you join monks and medieval scholars dressed in replicas of medieval clothing for an immersion into daily life in villages and castles, religion, culture and celebrations of medieval peoples. At the Benedictine Monastery of the Ascension, examine a collection of facsimile medieval books, and discuss the popular literary works of the times, including books of hours, bestiaries, and Chaucer�s "Canterbury Tales.� Experience herbs and cuisine from the time period. Discover how medieval people viewed their world, and decide if they can teach us about how we live today.

Surrounded by bountiful farmlands and bordering on the Snake River Canyon, Jerome county has 16,000 residents, including twelve Benedictine monks, who live a peaceful, prayerful life in a thoroughly modern monastery.

Hugh Feiss

Fr. Hugh Feiss is a favorite Road Scholar instructor whose academic interests center on medieval religious thought and practice, monastic history, and theology about Christ and creation. He taught humanities, philosophy and theology at an Oregon seminary before coming to Ascension Priory in Jerome, Idaho, in 1996. Fr. Feiss has authored more than 20 books and 50 scholarly articles, and his interests include ornithology, natural history and environmental ethics.

Joanne Draper

Joanne Draper earned her bachelor and master degrees in education from the University of North Dakota. She taught in schools in North Dakota and Idaho for over 20 years. Currently she is an instructor at the College of Southern Idaho, while studying Latin online and working for a Licentiate degree from in theology from the University of Wales.

Sara Parkin

Sara Parkin is a passionate educator, having taught high school English and Irish literature and writing at Portland State University. An avid reader, she has taught detective fiction in Road Scholar programs. Sara is a regular practitioner of yoga and leads movement exercises.

Janne Goldbeck

Janne Goldbeck is professor emerita of English at Idaho State University, where she taught from 1976 to 2006. She is an expert in medieval English literature and specializes in medieval women�s visionary literature � rare writings by female authors that reveal what medieval life was like for women. She has taught classes on Chaucer, Dante and Malory, among others. Professor Goldbeck was born in Texas and received her Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma. She enjoys writing poems and essays, hiking and gardening.

Jane Rickenbaugh

Jane Rickenbaugh is a dancer and choreographer who has taught at several colleges and learning institutions. She holds master�s degrees in dance and public speaking and was one of the original faculty members of Clackamas Community College in Oregon City, Ore. Jane was a pioneer in liturgical dance and still teaches religious dance. She founded and led the group �Dance of the Angels,� which performed medieval religious dramas.

Ezekiel Lotz

Fr. Ezekiel Lotz has been a Benedictine monk for more than fifteen years. He has taught church history, humanities and comparative religion at Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Ore., as well as serving as organist and choir master for the abbey. Fr. Ezekiel received a D. Phil. degree from Oxford University with a specialization in the history of late medieval monasticism and contemplative life in Burgundy and Flanders. During his time at the Monastery of the Ascension he hopes to deepen his own commitment to contemplative prayer spurred on, in part, by the breathtaking vistas of Idaho�s Magic Valley.

	Description:	The Road Scholar is held in a retreat center phyiscally attached to a small Benedictine Monastery. Participants may share in the monastic prayers if they wish.

	Room amenities:	All air conditioned, with outside window. All open onto pleasant, quiet lounge area. Four single rooms, used when the main facility is full, are available in an annex. These rooms have private bath and shower, but are more rustic.

Free snack bar, laundry, private baths, RV spaces with ordinary household electricity (30 AMP only) and access to showers (limited water hookups; no dump site on the premises). Facility provides nice panorama to the south over the Magic Valley and the town of Twin Falls with mountains in the background.

[Or continue north on Hwy 93 for another mile to blinking yellow light, turn right onto Hwy 25 (toward Eden, ID, go 1.9 miles to a sign which also says "Monastery of the Ascension," turn right for 0.5 miles and turn in at monastery lane.]

Historical overview: England in 1400. Life in a village, monastery, university and castle; building a "cathedral" (Pillars of the Earth). Replica clothing reflecting English fashion of the time.

Day 4:

Chaucer; visit to family dairies (compare farm life in 1400, and the 21st century). Ride on Snake River in pontoon boats (very smooth and safe) with guides to tell about local history.
(Thursday, July 4)

Note: The two dairies we will visit are small (less than 100 cows) family operations, in sharp contrast to the large (1000-10,000 cows) dairies which dot south central Idaho. One delivers milk in glass bottles and makes superb ice cream; the other makes custom cheeses. We will sample both the ice cream and the cheese. / The local outfitter who will provide pontoon boat ride, will tell about the Snake River, its canyon and the settling on the Twin Falls area. Probably will see BASE jumpers also.

The Monastery of the Ascension and its attached retreat center are located centrally in the Magic Valley, five miles east of Jerome and ten miles north of Twin Falls. The monastery is within two hours' drive of Boise (state capitol; churches; Birds of Prey Center), Glens Ferry (Oregon Trail Interpretative Center; Three Island State Park), Malad Gorge State Park, Sun Valley, Jackpot, NV, Craters of the Moon, City of Rocks, Silver Creek Preserve, 1000 Spings (e.g., the spectacular Niagara Springs), Hagerman Fossil Beds Headquarters and Museum (Hagerman, ID), and ice caves north of Shoshone. There a number of museums (e.g., at College of Southern Idaho and in Twin Falls and Jerome), antique stores and galleries, as well as numerous golf courses, several hot springs, and scenic boat rides in the Snake River Canyon.
