This exceptional cultural adventure in the Blue Grass State gives you a bucketful of south-central Kentucky insight — and then some! Hear from folklorists, naturalists and musicians about the customs and way of life folks in these parts hold dear to their hearts. Meet and interact with local musicians, hike with a naturalist to learn about the region’s geology, delve into decades-old home Rx recipes, and warm up your dancing muscles for some traditional dancing, from square dancing to line dancing.

• The folk-culture class “Grandma Kept a Buckeye in Her Purse” delves into old-time remedies and cures. • Insight into the history of foods grown and prepared in settlement days is the subject of a folk-culture class, “Pioneer Vittles.” • Anticipation builds for a final-night campfire highlighted by music-accompanied sing-a-longs and entertaining storytelling of Kentucky folklore.

Atop the rolling hills of south central Kentucky, Lake Cumberland was created by the construction of the Wolf Creek Dam and today, the lake’s 1,000-mile shoreline invites those seeking a refreshing dip or leisurely boat ride. This small, lakeside community surrounded by meadows and forest, offers breath-taking views.

| | A retired teacher, Lelana Tierney has taught mostly at the college level in such diverse courses as home nursing, clothing and design, gourmet foods, and home furnishing designs. Lelana has also been a consultant in the field of early childhood. She has an avid interest in Appalachian Culture and has researched the foods, crafts, quilting, weaving and dying of wool used in the Appalachian area. She, along with her husband John, present workshops on Appalachian Culture to varied groups. | | | | John Tierney
| | John Tierney is a retired naturalist with the Kentucky State Parks System. During his 32 years of service, he lead trail walks, cave explorations, and planned many special events programs dealing such diverse nature topics as eagle watches, cave crawling events, bat seminars, wildflower pilgrimages, and environmental awareness programs. He presently conducts programs in state and national parks, as well as presenting programs for community and private organizations. | | | | Anne MacFie
| | Anne MacFie began her singing career in 1966 at a steakhouse in her hometown of Portales, N.M. Three years later, she and her husband moved to Kentucky and entered the world of folk festivals and dulcimers. She has performed across the country and in Europe. In 2007, Anne turned 60 and remains every bit as vibrant, especially with a dulcimer cradled on her thigh. She has studied Appalachian folklore extensively and teaches the dulcimer at many cultural events. | | | |
