See two Shakespeare plays plus see a bonus non-Shakespeare play performed by professionals from the Great River Shakespeare Festival. Enhance your theater experience by discussing the production approach and exploring the directing, design and acting functions. The expertise, enthusiasm and energy of the instructors will add to your enjoyment of the program. You will attend plays as well as participate in some of the special events in conjunction with the Festival. Driving Directions
  From the East (Madison, WI) Take I-90 West to Hwy 43 North exit. Drive six miles to Winona. At T lighted intersection, turn left. At first light, turn right onto Highway 61. Continue to lighted intersection with Highway 14. Turn right onto Highway 14. At first light turn right and curve around to Days Inn entrance.
  From the North (Minneapolis/St. Paul) Take Hwy 61 to Winona. At lighted intersection with Highway 14 turn right. At next stop light turn right and curve around to Days Inn entrance.
  From the South (La Crosse, WI) Take Hwy 61 to Winona. At lighted intersection with Highway 14 turn left. At next stop light turn right and curve around to Days Inn entrance.
  From the West (Rochester) Take Highway 14 into Winona. At first stop light turn left and curve around to Days Inn entrance or Take I 90 to Hwy 43 North Exit. Drive six miles to Winona. Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival and Check-In, introductions/overview, dinner at a local restaurant, and a class at the motel.
(Tuesday, July 9)
   
 Afternoon: Check in at motel at 3:30 PM. Pick up Road Scholar folders and meet coordinator. Welcome and introductions at 4:30 PM.
 Dinner: Dinner at nearby restaurant.
 Evening: Program overview. Meet some of the key staff of the Great River Shakespeare Festival and gain an understanding of why Winona was chosen as the site for the Festival and the philosophy and story behind the creation of the Festival.

Day 2: Classes, tour of Winona, and optional band concert
(Wednesday, July 10)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at motel.
 Morning: Class on The Playwright: His Life and Times
 Lunch: Lunch at Winona State University
 Afternoon: Following lunch there will be a class on the Directing Process, with an explanation of just what a director does and how he or she works with the technical and acting staff. Following this class we will have a tour of Winona highlights, including a visit to a scenic overlook to see why Winona is known as "the Island City", a visit to the Watkins Company headquarters,museum and store. Time permitting we will tour the local bank for more Watkins history and beautiful examples of Tiffany stained glass. Both the Watkins administration building and the bank were designed by architect George Maher, a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright.
 Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.
 Evening: Transportation will be provided for those who would like to attend an outdoor Community Band Concert at the bandshell in the park.

Day 3: More interesting classes and you will be attending the first play. The production will be followed by a community "company conversation" .
(Thursday, July 11)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at motel.
 Morning: Direction and Design of the first play. Meet the production director and technical staff who conceive how the play will look when it is presented. Learn how the stage is transformed into the setting visualized by the director. Receive special insights on effects to watch for when viewing the play.
 Lunch: Lunch at Winona State University campus.
 Afternoon: Acting the Parts in the first play. Talk to actors who will be on stage. Hear about their backgrounds, how they were hired, what they do to prepare for a role, and an opportunity to ask any of those questions you always wished you could ask when you see a stage production. These talented professional actors will share their stories with you in a most enjoyable class session.
 Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.
 Evening: You will have excellent seats as we attend the first play of this Road Scholar program. As an added bonus there will be a "company conversation" following the play where you will be able to ask questions of the cast and give them feedback on your reactions to the production.

Day 4: Classes, Marine Art Museum and the second play
(Friday, July 12)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at motel.
 Morning: Get behind the scenes information from the Direction and Design staff of the second play. Learn how transitions are made from one play to another. Get the insiders view of how a play is put together.
 Lunch: Lunch at Winona State University campus.
 Afternoon: Meet the actors who will be appearing in the second play. Talk to them about how it works to do plays in repertory. Discuss with them their plans for the future and ask any pertinent questions about their roles and performances. After class we will visit the beautiful Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM).. The building and river-side site set the stage for the beautiful marine art you will see on the inside. The MMAM is home to some of the best collections of "art insired by water" in the U.S. In the Burrichter-Kierlin art collection you will see some of the finest examples of marine art by world renown artists. Other galleries may display touring collections, photographic exhibits, and other works of art.
 Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.
 Evening: Enjoy the performance of the second play.

Day 5: Attend Festival activities, pack up/check out

 Breakfast: Breakfast at the motel.
 Morning: The Winona State University campus contains an example of every species of tree native to Minnesota. Enjoy a walking tour to view these native trees. Then participate in an engaging conversation about the Great River Shakespeare Festival production of Twelfth night.
 Lunch: A lunch will be provided to take out or eat on site.
