An expert-led city excursion highlights historic architecture and ends at the Royal Mews, the stables and carriage house of the Royal Family. Encounter six centuries’ worth of significant British men and women face to face at the National Portrait Gallery. Step inside Kensington Palace, the residence of royals including Princess Diana, and learn about Queen Victoria in her own words at a new permanent exhibition. Your afternoons are free for independent exploration — make sure to ask your group leaders to suggest their favorite interesting places and outstanding restaurants.

  Transportation to site: A group arrival transfer is organized for all participants who purcahsed an air inclusive program and arrive on the group arrival date. This information will be provided in the final mailing. From London Heathrow, we recommend the Heathrow Express: this runs direct from the airport to London Paddington in just 15 minutes (20 from Terminal 5) and there’s a train every quarter of an hour. The Gatwick Express runs a similar service into Victoria. From either terminus, you can take the Underground (Circle Line) to Tower Hill: The Tower Hotel is less than 7 minutes’ walk away. Leave the station via the entrance on the left, go down the steps and through the subway. Turn left and walk past the Tower of London. Another subway takes you under the next road, then simply follow signs for The Tower Hotel.

Day 2: Arrival in London: Welcome and Orientation
(Saturday, October 5)
   
 Morning: Various arrival and transfers to the program hotel. Exact transfer time is subject to final flight arrivals from the U.S. and will be posted in your final mailing prior to the start of the program. Early arrivals may not be able to check in to their rooms prior to 2:00 p.m. Rooms will be assigned for check in based on arrival time at the hotel.
 Lunch: For those arriving early, lunch is not provided. Your Group Leader will be happy to make suggestions near the hotel.
 Afternoon: Program Orientation: Check in at your hotel and take the afternoon to unpack and relax. In the early evening (17:30) you will meet with your group for introductions, a review of the program itinerary and site orientation. You will also receive some expert advice on getting around in London.

Day 3: The Royal Collection: Queens Gallery and the Royal Mews
(Sunday, October 6)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: Expert presentation at the hotel focusing on the Royal Collection. Shaped by the personal tastes of kings and queens over more than 500 years, the Royal Collection includes paintings, drawings and watercolours, furniture, ceramics, clocks, silver, sculpture, jewellery, books, manuscripts, prints and maps, arms and armour, fans, and textiles. Later we leave by coach for a panoramic overview of London's monuments and most famous sights. Your London expert continues a discussion of the city's history, as well as its architecture throughout the ages. We end the morning with an on-site lecture/field trip at the Royal Mews. Hear how the Mews serves the Queen in the performance of her official duties and prepares for major State and ceremonial occasions, from the State Opening of Parliament to royal weddings.

Day 4: Discover the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery
(Monday, October 7)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: On-site lecture/field trip to the National Portrait Gallery. Spanning six centuries of history, the Gallery tells the story of Britain through portraits of men and women who have made a significant contribution to British life. From Elizabeth I and Henry VIII to Shakespeare, Cromwell, Nelson, Dickens, Churchill and Beckham, gain an overview of the Collection seeing the highlights on display.
 Lunch: Lunch on your own.
 Afternoon: This afternoon, join your local expert to visit the National Gallery. The National Gallery houses the national collection of Western European painting from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Hear curators, scientific and conservation staff talking about the techniques used to create some of the masterpieces in the National Gallery collection. Get beneath the surface of the paintings; find out what has been discovered using x-rays and modern scientific techniques.

Day 5: Discover Kensington Palace and Hyde Park
(Tuesday, October 8)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: We start the morning with a special presentation: Diana, glimpses of a Modern Princess. Later we make our way to Kensington Palace. As part of Kensington's transformation, Victoria Revealed, an exciting new permanent exhibition, explores Queen Victoria's life and reign through her own words. Experience Victoria's first day as Queen at Kensington Palace, the romance of her early relationship with Prince Albert, moments of family life, and aspects of Albert's involvement in the 1851 Great Exhibition.
 Lunch: Lunch on your own.
 Afternoon: The afternoon is free to explore on your own and suggestions of interesting sites to visit will be made by your group leader, or please join your local expert to for a discovery walk in the Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, taking public transport back to the hotel. At 145 hectares, Hyde Park is central London's largest open space. Henry VIII expropriated it from the Church in 1536, when it became a hunting ground and later a venue for duels, executions and horse racing. The 1851 Great Exhibition was held here, and during WWII the park became an enormous potato field. These days, it serves as an occasional concert venue and a full-time green space for fun and frolics.

Day 6: Depart London by Train to Paris / Musee d' Orsay
(Wednesday, October 9)
   
 Breakfast: Early breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: Transfer from the hotel in London to the train station for your TGV train to Paris. The journey takes about 3 hours.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Musee D'Orsay.
 Afternoon: With your expert guide, discover the world's largest collection of Impressionist paintings at the Orsay Museum. Facing the Seine, the Musée d’Orsay is housed in a former train station (1900). It displays France’s national collection of paintings, sculptures, objets d’art and other works produced between the 1840s and 1914, including the works of the Impressionist, post-Impressionist and art nouveau movements.
 Dinner: Dinner at a local restaurant.
 Evening: After dinner enjoy a scenic coach drive, by some of Paris' most famous monuments. Depending on the time of year you may enjoy the monuments during daylight or illuminated at night.

Day 7: Paris: IIe de la Cite
(Thursday, October 10)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: The morning discover l'Ile de La Cite and the Gothic quarter of Paris. Led by your local expert learn about and explore Gothic Paris with visits to Notre Dame Cathedral, the Conciergerie (where Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned before her death by guillotine) and the exquisite Sainte Chapelle.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: The afternoon is free to explore on your own and suggestions of interesting sites to visit will be made on site. Thursday offers unlimited potential as all museums are open. Check with your Group Leader for suggestions or just wander the city discovering the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing read sipping a cafe au lait.
 Dinner: Dinner on your own.

Day 8: The Food Culture of Paris / Rodin Museum and Gardens
(Friday, October 11)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: This morning explore the Market and Food Culture of Paris, spend the morning exploring some small shops and the local market learning and tasting some incredible local flavors in a typical Parisian neighborhood.
 Lunch: Lunch at a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: This afternoon explore the Musee Rodin, rated as one of the most enjoyable museum in Paris. The museum boasts the best collection of works by the sculptors Pierre August Rodin (creator of famous statue, "The Thinker") and Camille Claudel. It features an inside museum and a lovely outside garden showcasing Rodin's best work.

Day 9: Paris: the Louvre and Montmartre
(Saturday, October 12)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel.
 Morning: Enjoy a self-guided visit of the Louvre using an audioguide created exclusively for Road Scholar participants, containing informative commentary by lecturers sharing their passion for highlights of the Louvre. One of the largest museums in the world, the Louvre was once the royal residence of the kings of France and is now home to a collection of art unmatched by any other museum.
 Lunch: Lunch on your own in or near the museum.
 Afternoon: The afternoon is free to explore on your own and suggestions of interesting sites to visit will be made on site. You can also choose to join your local expert for an optional in-depth exploration of Montmartre, the Place du Tertre and the Sacre Coeur basilica, including some charming hidden streets. Montmartre offers one of the best views of Paris.
 Dinner: Enjoy your Farewell Dinner.

  Paris Musee Jacquemart-Andre
The Jacquemart-André Museum, founded by collector Édouard André and his portraitist wife Nélie Jacquemart, is in an opulent mid-19th-century residence on one of Paris’ posher avenues. It has furniture, tapestries and enamels, but is most noted for its paintings by Rembrandt and Van Dyck and Italian Renaissance works by Bernini, Botticelli, Carpaccio, Donatello, Mantegna, Tintoretto, Titian and Uccello. Don’t miss the Jardin d’Hiver (Winter Garden), with its marble statuary, tropical plants and double-helix marble staircase. Just off it is the delightful fumoir (the erstwhile smoking room) filled with exotic objects collected by Jacquemart during her travels. The salon de thé is one of the most beautiful in the city.   Musee National du Moyen Age
The National Museum of the Middle Ages is housed in two structures: the frigidarium (cooling room) and other remains of Gallo-Roman baths dating from around AD 200, and the late-15th-century Hôtel de Cluny, considered the finest example of medieval civil architecture in Paris. The spectacular displays at the museum include statuary, illuminated manuscripts, weapons, furnishings, and objets d’art made of gold, ivory and enamel. But nothing compares with La Dame à la Licorne (The Lady with the Unicorn), a sublime series of late-15th-century tapestries from the southern Netherlands now hung in circular room 13 on the 1st floor.   Musee de L’Orangerie
Located in the southwestern corner of the Jardin des Tuileries, this museum, with the Jeu de Paume, is all that remains of the once palatial Palais des Tuileries, which was razed during the Paris Commune in 1871. It exhibits important Impressionist works, including a series of Monet's Decorations des Nymphéas (Water Lilies) in two huge oval rooms purpose-built in 1927 on the artist's instructions, as well as works by Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, Sisley, Soutine and Utrillo.   Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré
The rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré is a street in the 8th arrondissement. Although relatively narrow and nondescript (especially in comparison to the avenue des Champs-Élysées), it is cited as being one of the most fashionable streets in the world, thanks to the presence of virtually every major global fashion house.
  London British Museum
One of London’s most visited attractions, the British Museum draws an average of five million punters each year. The museum was founded in 1753 following the bequest of royal physician Hans Sloane’s ‘cabinet of curiosities’. The collection opened to the public in 1759 and the museum has since kept ex-panding its collection through judicious acquisitions and the controversial plundering of imperialism. It has galleries devoted to ancient civilisations, from Egypt to Western Asia, the Middle East, the Romans and Greece, India, Africa, prehistoric and Roman Britain and medieval antiquities. One of its most famous items is the Rosetta Stone.
  Buckingham Palace
Built in 1705 as Buckingham House for the duke of the same name, this palace has been the Royal Family’s London lodgings since 1837, when Queen Victoria moved in. You can always tell if the Queen is in residence, look at the flagpole on top of the Palace, if the flag is flying then 'the Queen is at home'! The Changing of the Guard in front of the palace is one of the most popular attractions in London. It happens on most days. The official start time is 11:30 a.m.
  Tower of London
The Tower of London was started during the reign of William the Conqueror (1066–87). The Tower is in fact a castle and has served over the years as a palace, observatory, storehouse and mint, but it is most famous for its grizzly past as a prison and site of execution. The culmination of your tour will leave you at the Chapel Royal of St Peter in Chains, a rare example of ecclesiastical Tudor architecture and the burial place of those beheaded on the scaffold outside, most notably Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey. In the Waterloo Barracks you will see the Crown Jewels, including the Imperial State Crown, set with 2868 diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies and pearls, and the platinum crown of the late Queen Mother, Elizabeth, which is famously set with the 105-carat Koh-i-Noor (Mountain of Light) diamond. Surrounded by myth and legend, the 14th-century diamond has been claimed by both India and Afghanistan. It reputedly confers enormous power on its owner, but male owners are destined to die a tormented death.
  Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey has never been a cathedral (the seat of a bishop). It's what is called a 'royal peculiar' and is administered directly by the Crown. Every monarch since William the Conqueror has been crowned here, with the exception of Edward V who was murdered and Edward VIII who abdicated before coronation. Look for the ordinary-looking Coronation Chair. The building is a mixture of architectural styles, considered the finest example of Early English Gothic in existence. The original church was built in the 11th century by King (later Saint) Edward the Confessor, who is buried in the chapel behind the main altar. Henry III began work on the new building in 1245 but didn't complete it; the French Gothic nave was finished in 1388. Henry VII's magnificent Late Perpendicular–style Lady Chapel was consecrated in 1519 after 16 years of construction. Apart from the royal graves (including most of the monarchs from Henry III to George II), many famous commoners were interred here, especially in Poets' Corner, where you'll find the resting places of Chaucer, Dickens, Hardy, Tennyson, Dr Johnson and Kipling as well as memorials to the other greats (Shakespeare, Austen, Brontë etc). Also in the abbey are the graves of Handel and Sir Isaac Newton.
