Whether you enjoy the excellent and forgiving medium of acrylics or prefer the vibrant challenge of painting with oils, enjoy a week of creating art in the beautiful Hudson Valley region. Get pointers from art instructors on developing good composition, creating clean color, and learning tips about perspective and the effects of light. Daily demonstrations and critiques help move your progress along quickly as you enjoy both indoor and outdoor painting sessions. Challenge yourself to paint more boldly and fearlessly — all levels of experience are welcome!

Louise Minks

Louise Minks is a professional artist, writer and historian. She is an elected member of the National Association of Women Artists and the author of "The Hudson River School," America's first landscape painters. Louise was awarded a painting residency at the Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, N.M., and is an artist-in-residence at the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, as well as at Memorial Hall Museum in Deerfield, Mass. She owns a gallery and studio in Montague, Mass.

  FROM CONNECTICUT Take Rt 84 West to Exit 4E, taking Route 17 East to Route 17A Florida/Goshen Exit 124. Take Route 17A until it merges with Rt 94 at the first traffic light in Florida. Drive THROUGH the Villages of Florida and Warwick. Stay on Rt 94 South until Pennings Lane. Turn Left onto Pennings Lane. Follow the signs to The Warwick Center.
  FROM NEW YORK THRUWAY/NORTH OR SOUTH Exit at Harriman - Exit 16. Take Rt 17 West to Exit 126 - Chester exit. Look for Route 94 South (or West). Take Rt 94 South toward Florida/Warwick. Continue on Rt 94 through the Villages of Florida and Warwick. Go approximately 2 1/2 miles beyond the Village of Warwick passing Shop Rite, Pennings Orchards and Warwick Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership, all on your left. Turn left at the next intersection onto Pennings Lane. Follow signs to the Warwick Center.
  FROM SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY Take 287 North to Exit 52B for Rt. 23 North. Take Rt. 23 North to 515 North. Take 515 North to Vernon where 515 North becomes Rt 94 North. Take Rt 94 North to Pennings Lane. Turn right onto Pennings Lane. Follow signs to The Warwick Center.
  FROM WASHINGTON, D.C./PHILADELPHIA AREA Take the New Jersey Turnpike to the Garden State Parkway North to Route 17 North. Approximately 2 1/2 miles past Tuxedo Park you will come to a traffic light. Exit left at the traffic light - Junction 17A. At the stop sign at the top of the hill, make a left hand turn onto Rt 17A (Sterling Forest). Rt 17A will take you directly to Warwick. At the "T" intersection in Warwick, turn LEFT onto Route 94 West. Go approximately 2 1/2 miles passing Shop Rite, Pennings Orchards and Warwick Chrysler Jeep Dodge Dealership, all on the left. Turn left at the next intersection onto Pennings Lane. Follow the signs to The Warwick Center.
  NYC/GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE From the GW Bridge, take Interstate 80 West to Exit 53 for Rt 23 North. Take Rt 23 North to 515 North. Take 515 North to Vernon where 515 North becomes Rt 94 North. Take Rt 94 North to Pennings Lane. Turn right onto Pennings Lane. Then follow signs to The Warwick Center.
Equipment Requirements: PAINTING SUPPLIES: EASEL: A collapsible table or standing painting easel. A standing easel can be modified to work as a table easel. BRUSHES: OIL PAINTING: Hog or natural bristle. Two brushes, long handled "flat" style are enough, about 1/4 in. and 1/2 in. wide and about 3/4 in. long. ACRYLIC PAINTING: Long handled "flat" style with SYNTHETIC bristles. Two brushes are enough, about 1/4 in. and 1/2 in. wide and about 3/4 in. long. PAINT: Note: Medium size means @ 2-3 oz. You will mix your greens, browns, grays, blacks, etc. Titanium white: 1 large tube or 2 medium tubes. Yellow ochre or yellow oxide: 2 medium tubes. Cadmium Red Medium, Permanent Red or Napthol Crimson: 1 medium tube. Cadmium or Hansa Yellow Medium: 1 medium tube. Quinacradone (abbrev. "Accra") Magenta or Violet, or Alizarin Crimson: 1 med. tube.  Morning: Our artist will present an expert-led lecture along with opportunites for hands-on experiences.

 Afternoon: Our professional artist-in-residence will present a lecture/hands-on experience.
 Dinner: Dinner served buffet style at 6:00 P.M. in the East House Dining Hall.
 Evening: The painting studio will be open for participants to enjoy hands-on experience.

Day 3: Sculpture Garden
(Tuesday, September 24)

Note: Requires walking on an un-even terraine.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast served buffet style in the East House Dining Hall.
 Morning: Our Artist-in-Residence will present a lecture along with hands-on experience.
 Lunch: Lunch served buffet style in the East House Dining Hall.
 Afternoon: A visit to Pacem in Terris, a six acre sculpture garden with 70 large-scale sculptures, will be offered. This sculpture garden was created by Dr. Franck, a Dutch-born sculpture, painter, and author. Two lectures/hands-on experiences will be offered by our professional artist-in-residence, and for those who wish there is an opportunity to sketch and paint.
 Dinner: Dinner served buffet style at 6:00 P.M. in the East House Dining Hall.
 Evening: The painting studio will be open for participants to experience hands-on opportunities.

Day 4: Enjoy browsing and shopping in the historic Village of Warwick.
(Wednesday, September 25)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast served buffet style in the East House Dining Hall.
 Morning: The artist-in-residence will offer an expert-led lecture along with a hands-on experience.
 Lunch: Lunch served buffet style in the East House Dining Hall.
 Afternoon: Free time for an optional off-site trip to Sugar Loaf, New York's premier Artists' Village or trip to the historic Village of Warwick. Transporation provided by The Warwick Center.
 Dinner: Dinner will be served buffet style in the East House Dining Hall.
 Evening: An opportunity will be offered for participants to gain extra hands-on experiences in the painting studio.

 Afternoon: Optional free time. The workshop will also be open for those who wish to paint.
