The Thoreau You Don’t Know and America’s “Wisest” Philosopher, Emerson

For a short period of time, Concord, MA, was the center of American intellectual life led by the lives and writings of Thoreau and Emerson. Examine how their two poles of thinking impacted their character and our lives today. Explore their personal lives, philosophies, and enjoy a fieldtrip to Walden Pond and Concord Museum.



Covered Bridges of Cheshire County

Discover the charm, beauty and history of many picturesque covered bridges (kissing bridges) of Cheshire County, and others in the Northeast, and around the world. Uncover the strength, design, construction techniques and learn the bridge language.




West Swanzey

Nestled in the valley of southwest New Hampshire, West Swanzey is one of several postcard-perfect towns in the Monadock region. Winding roads pass covered bridges, historic sites and the 3,000-foot Mount Monadnock, one of the most popular ascents in New England.

  Boston, MA Highway #2 West to 140 N. 140 N to 12 N. 12 N through Troy, NH to Flat Roof Mill Rd., (3.5 miles N of Troy) L on Flat Roof Mill Rd to #32. (about 4 miles - stop sign). R on 32 and an immediate L on Swanzey Lake Rd. 2.2 miles on Swanzey Lake Rd to West Shore Rd. Turn R and follow 1 mile to Pilgrim Pines sign.. continue 1/4 mile to Mayflower Lodge - Office.
  Hartford, CT/Springfield, MA #91 N to exit 28A...(N of Greenfield, MA exit) Follow #10 N from that exit through Winchester, NH. Four miles N of Winchester look for Pilgrim Pines sign. When you pass the Shamrock Reality building, turn R on Swanzey Lake Rd. Follow 4 miles, bearing R to West Shore Rd. Turn L on West Shore Rd and follow one mile to Pilgrim Pines sign... continue 1/4 mile to Mayflower Lodge - Office.

Day 1: Afternoon arrival/Welcome Dinner/Orientation

 Afternoon: Registration begins at 3:00-3:30 p.m.in Mayflower Lodge - Office. Coffee and snacks, 3:30-5:00 p.m
 Dinner: Dinner, 6:00 p.m in the lodge.
 Evening: Orientation, 7:30 p.m.

Day 2: First Class Session
(Monday, May 6)

Note: Enjoyment of waterfront activities on Swanzey Lake and an optional Hike



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast, 8:00 a.m in the lodge.
 Morning: 9:00 a.m. Thoreau Break 10:45 a.m Covered Bridges
 Lunch: Lunch, 12:30 p.m. in the lodge
 Afternoon: Opportunities for afternoon of choice: Recreation on campus, canoeing, golf, tennis and a hike will be offered. Other activities - TBA
 Dinner: Dinner, 6:00 p.m in lodge
 Evening: 7:15 p.m. Emerson Evening snacks and fun 8:45 p.m.

Day 3: Tour of Covered Bridges of Chesire County

Day 4: Fieldtrip to Walden Pond and Concord Museum

Note: Fieldtrip by Vans to Walden Pond and Concord will be an all day event

 Morning: 9:00 am - Leave for fieldtip to Walden Pond.10:45 am Arrive, coffee break 11:00 am Tour of Walden Pond.
 Lunch: Bag Lunch On-Site.
 Afternoon: Fieldtrip continues with a visit to Concord Museum - Return to Pilgrim Pines by 5:00 pm
 Dinner: Dinner at 6:00 pm in the lodge.
 Evening: 7:15 pm Open Evening - Options - TBA - followed by Snacks

Day 5: Covered Bridge Museum
(Thursday, May 9)

Note: Fieldtrip to Bennington, VT to visit Covered Bridge Museum



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at 8:00 am in the lodge.
 Morning: 9:00 am Thoreau & Emerson Break 10:30 am Leave for Covered Bridge Museum in Bennington, VT
 Lunch: Lunch at 12:30 pm Box lunch on site
 Afternoon: Tour of Covered Bridge Museum focused on how they were made, history and visual presentation of bridges today. The Museum also has wood carvings, works of local artists and Native American art treasurers, In the late afternoon we will return to campus.
 Dinner: Dinner at 6:00 pm in the Mayflower Dining Room
 Evening: 7:30 pm Homespun will invite Road Scholars to share a poem, song, creative writing. The evening will close with make your own sundaes.

Day 6: Closing sessions of classes
