Explore Maine’s beautiful coast and its hundreds of islands aboard the 95-foot windjammer “Angelique.” This swift, snug and safe steel-and-wood sailing vessel serves as lodge, classroom and serene retreat. Departing from the beautiful town of Camden, “Angelique” drops anchor every evening in a picturesque harbor to let you explore a historic village, a beach or tide pool, a lighthouse or an uninhabited island.




Highlights

Camden (Maine)

From atop the cool waters of Penobscot Bay, one can see the Camden Hills and rock-rimmed islands that dot the harbor of this coastal town. Following a tradition of fishing and shipbuilding, boating remains a top recreational activity in Camden.
Accommodations
Cabins aboard the Ketch Angelique average range in dimension (ft) from 7'6"x5'x6'2" to 7'x7'x6'8" with double beds or bunks. All cabins have cold running water, fresh linens, towels, wool blankets and reading lights. There are three shared heads (baths) two have hot showers. Cabin assignment is by lottery.

Bud Warren
Historian, teacher and raconteur, Bud Warren has studied, written and lectured about Maine’s maritime history, geography, environment and culture for nearly 40 years. He has been a lobsterman, worked in a lumber mill and at Bath Iron Works, climbed Maine's peaks and rowed and sailed much of its coastline. He was active for more than a quarter of a century as a teaching volunteer and staff member at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath.
 
Barbara Tomlinson
Naturalist, wildlife educator and falconer Barbara Tomlinson operates Wild Haven in Rockport, Maine, where she incorporates her cherished crowd of non-releasable raptors into her popular educational presentations. Barbara also holds a degree in horticulture and has been a beloved and enthusiastic Road Scholar instructor for many years.
 
Michael Marion
Michael Marion is the lead education ranger for Acadia National Park, located on Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine. He started working at Acadia as an interpreter in 1998 and became a permanent employee of the Interpretation Division the following year. Michael possesses broad knowledge of the Maine coastal environment, from identifying its trees and birds to the ecology of its tide pools and rocky shores. He is enthusiastic about sharing his love of nature with Road Scholar participants.

  Room amenities: You will live in cabins with a double bed or two upper and lower single bunk-style berths and cold water sinks. Storage space is limited in all cabins. Duffle bags and soft sided luggage are easier to store.

  Start of Program:
Start Time: You can board the Angelique anytime after 3:00pm. Road Scholar orientation will be held between 5:00 and 5:30pm. You will be staying at Ketch Angelique that night.
  End of Program:
End Time: Guests disembark around 9:30 am. We recommend you schedule departing flights after 12:00 pm. if flying out of Portland or Bangor. You will be staying at Ketch Angelique the night before.

Mid Coast Limo provides service both to/from the airports in Portland and Bangor Maine. They will bring you to or pick you up in Camden Maine where ANGELIQUE is located.
 
Driving Directions
  Alternate inland Route from Boston area An alternate inland Route avoids heavy seasonal Rte. 1 traffic: I-295 north to exit 49--Gardiner/Randolph. Take Rte. 201 to Gardiner--follow signs carefully; cross Kennebec River bridge to Randolph, turning right (S. on Rte. 27); In a half-mile, turn left on Route 226, proceeding about 6 miles to Route 17; turn east on Rte. 17, following it to Route 90, in West Rockport. Go east on 90 to US Route 1, Rockport, and take US Route 1 north to Camden. Stay on Route 1 through downtown Camden. Take a right onto Atlantic Avenue, just before the library. You'll see us tied to Library Park at the head of the harbor on your right. Park on the street until you get checked in aboard Angelique.
  From Boston Area (Drive time is about 4 hours). Take I-95 north from the Boston area to Exit 44, I-295. Take I-295 to Exit 28-- Bath Brunswick, Rte. 1. Stay on Route 1 to Warren, turning left on Rte. 90. Go east on 90 to US Route 1, Rockport, and take US Route 1 north to Camden. Stay on Route 1 through downtown Camden. Take a right onto Atlantic Avenue, just before the library. You'll see us tied to Library Park at the head of the harbor on your right. Park on the street until you get checked in aboard Angelique.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Board Angelique/Orientation/Dinner
(Sunday, June 9)
   
 Afternoon: You will board Angelique anytime between 3:00 & 5:00 PM. Please do not try to board before 3:00 PM. The crew members will give all drivers directions for parking your car. An orientation meeting will be held between 5:00 and 5:30 PM, providing information about the vessel, life aboard, and safety issues. This is also when you will meet the captain, crew, instructors, and other Road Scholar guests also joining us.
 Dinner: Dinner on the Angelique
 Evening: Evening activities on your own, including enjoying Camden and getting to know your shipmates.

Day 2: Sailing the waters of Penobscot Bay and islands of Penobscot Bay.
(Monday, June 10)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast on the Angelique
 Morning: Prepare to get underway, drop mooring lines, underway to outer harbor, sail setting orentation, raise and trim sails, and listen to the Captains discussion about vessel.
 Lunch: Lunch on the Angelique
 Afternoon: (The itinerary is subject to change depending on winds, tides, the fog, other weather and exciting opportunities that present themselves.) Vessel orientation, dicussion of vessel, history, rigging, wildlife identification, binocular tips. Depart from of Camden, weather permitting head North to Fort Point State Park, sight of Fort Pownal and Fort Point Lighthouse, tour grounds in evening.
 Dinner: Dinner on the Angelique
 Evening: Overview of the days sail and vessel with captain and crew, questions, chart discussion. Then there is always the opportunity to read, relax, enjoy shipmates, and play board games in the messroom.

Day 3: Historic Castine
(Tuesday, June 11)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast on the Angelique
 Morning: Underway after breakfast, sail to Castine.
 Lunch: Lunch on the Angelique
 Afternoon: Explore the historic, colonial town of Castine. Visit Wilson Museum, walking tour, view historic architecture and sites of town, visit Dice Head Lighthouse.
 Dinner: Dinner on the Angelique
 Evening: Discussion of early Maine settlements, Penobscot Expedition, importance of fishing to the New World.
   
Accommodations: Ketch Angelique
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Sailing the waters of Penobscot Bay.
(Wednesday, June 12)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast on the Angelique
 Morning: Underway after breakfast and sail from Castine to Wooden Boat Magazine Campus.
 Lunch: Lunch on the Angelique
 Afternoon: While underway, bird and seal watching. Row ashore to visit Wooden Boat Shop and picturesque campus.
 Dinner: Dinner on the Angelique
 Evening: Evening program, shipbuilding and launching along the Maine Coast.

Day 5: Natural History program, history of Lobsters, intertidal zone./Lobster Dinner
(Thursday, June 13)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast on the Angelique
 Morning: Sail...Underway after breakfast and set sail for an island exploration. Discussion of Maine marine mammals.
 Lunch: Lunch on the Angelique
 Afternoon: Drop anchor and go ashore to explore an island. Discussion of intertidal zone and island ecology.
 Dinner: Traditional Lobster Bake - Lobster, vegetable dip, onion dip, vegetable sticks, cheese and crackers, hot dogs or veggie burgers, pasta salad, blueberry pie and smores.
 Evening: Audubon's reintroduction of Puffins along Maine's Coast.

Day 6: Homeward Bound
(Friday, June 14)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast on the Angelique
 Morning: Sail south to Camden.
 Lunch: Lunch on the Angelique

 Dinner: Dinner on the Angelique
 Evening: Time to read, relax, enjoy shipmates, and play board games or explore Camden on your own.
