Stanley Bridge

Located at the junction of the Stanley River and New London Bay southwest of Cavendish, the historic village of Stanley Bridge was a bustling point of commerce in the 19th century for farmers who brought their goods to the coastal wharves. Author Lucy Maud Montgomery visited this quaint community as a child growing up nearby.

January 2008 a valid passport or original birth certificate along with a valid driver’s license or a state issued photo ID card will be required for land and sea border crossings to and from Canada. Driving Directions
	Charlottetown, PE	Take Rte. 2 west to Hunter River. Turn right on Rte. 13 (Irving station at the bottom of the hill) towards Cavendish. Turn west (left) on Rte. 224 in New Glasgow. Continue through the stop sign in Stanley Bridge and across the wharf. The Stanley Bridge Resort is on the right just up the hill from the wharf. (Look for the red roofs.)
	Confederation Bridge	Take the Trans Canada Highway (Rte. 1) until it intersects with 1A. Take 1A towards Summerside. Follow 1A to Rte. 2. Take Rte. 2 east toward Kensington. When you come to the traffic light in Kensington, continue straight through the light (past the Petro Can gas station) which then becomes Rte. 6 through Margate, Clinton, and New London to Stanley Bridge. The Stanley Bridge Country Resort will be on your left, overlooking the harbour. (Look for the red roofs.)
	Wood Island Ferry Terminal	Car/Passenger ferry that travels from Nova Scotia to PEI (14 miles/75 minutes). Take the Trans Canada Highway, 1A, to Charlottetown, then Take Rte. 2 west to Hunter River. Turn right on Rte. 13 (Irving station at the bottom of the hill) towards Cavendish. Turn west (left) on Rte. 224 in New Glasgow. Continue through the stop sign in Stanley Bridge and across the wharf. Orientation to your Road Scholar program and participants

Afternoon:	Independent arrivals to Stanley Bridge Country Resort for check in after 3:00 pm.
Dinner:	There are two restaurants on site that provide lovely meals, or you may choose to eat prior to your arrival at Stanley Bridge Country Resort.
Evening:	Orientation for your Road Scholar program will be held at 7:00 pm in one of the meeting rooms at the Stanley Bridge Country Resort.

Day 2:

Intro to the Canadian Maritimes/Stories of Shipwrecks and Rum Running//Green Gables/beaches, graveyards and the Yankee Gale/Organic farm visit/Community Ceilidh
(Monday, September 23)

Breakfast:	Breakfast on-site at Stanley Bridge Country Resort
Morning:	Enjoy an introductory lecture on the history and culture of the Canadian Maritime provinces. Hear some engaging stories about shipwrecks, rum running, and colorful stories of characters from Prince Edward Island history. Then it is off to Green Gables National Historic site to learn all about the facts behind the fiction of L.M. Montgomery's famous novel, Anne of Green Gables.
Lunch:	Lunch prepared by a Culinary Institute chef incorporating Island seafood and farm products. Always a hit!
Afternoon:	After lunch you will head to French River, one of the most picturesque and photographed spots on PEI. You will have a presentation and have a chance to walk on the beach and visit a seaside graveyard to learn about the famous Yankee Gale. This will be followed by a wonderful presentation and guided visit to an organic farm. Your presenter will capture your attention with his passion and engaging style. He is known for his farming skills along with being instrumental in growing the organic movement on Prince Edward Island.
Dinner:	Dinner will be at a local inn known for its wonderful food and outstanding service.
Evening:	Attend a community ceilidh (traditional music, dance, humour)

Day 3:

Stories and songs/guided tour of Summerside's waterfront and historic areas/French and British history at Port la Joye-Ft. Amherst/ice creamery tour and tasting/Charlottetown exploration
(Tuesday, September 24)

Breakfast:	Breakfast on-site at Stanley Bridge Country Resort
Morning:	Have an engaging presentation about Prince Edward Islanders as shared through stories and songs. Travel to Summerside, the Island's second largest city, for a guided tour along the waterfront, to see historic "fox houses" and to learn about the history and stories of this port city.
Lunch:	Lunch will be prepared by a Culinary Institute chef in a lovely country inn.
Afternoon:	Visit Port la Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site on one of the most beautiful harbours on Prince Edward Island. Discover the rich history of settlement, conflict and change during the struggle for control of North America between the French and English. From there you will enjoy a tour (and some tasting of ice cream!) at Cow's Creamery followed by a tour of Charlottetown and some free time downtown.

Crossing Northumberland Strait to New Brunswick/Cape Jourimain/ Ft. Beausejour/Sackville area/ learn about connections to the United States/visit to fishery
(Wednesday, September 25)

Breakfast:	Breakfast on-site at Stanley Bridge Country Resort
Morning:	Learn all about lobsters and mussels at a PEI fishery and then travel over the 9.5 mile Confederation Bridge to NB where you will meet your guide who will share the human and natural history of this very important part of North America. Learn about the significance of this region to the history of the United States and experience the landscapes and unique natural history for which this area is known. Visits include Cape Jourimain, Fort Beausejour, Acadian dykelands, and historic areas in Sackville.
Lunch:	Lunch in the quaint university town of Sackville, New Brunswick
Afternoon:	Guided exploration of the Tantramar region, Bay of Fundy and Sackville area including Mount Allison University. Check into the Coastal Inn, Sackville
Dinner:	Dinner will be enjoyed at one of the restaurants in the Sackville area.
Evening:	Free evening

Day 5:

Travel to Nova Scotia/high-bush blueberries and a wonderful lunch/"Evangeline" and Grand Pre'/Just Us Fair Trade coffee, tea, sugar and chocolate/Annapolis Valley Region
(Thursday, September 26)

Breakfast:	Breakfast on-site at the Coastal Inn, Sackville
Morning:	Travel from Sackville, NB into the province of Nova Scotia. Experience the place and the story that influenced Longfellow to write the epic poem, Evangeline. Learn about the first Acadians to settle this region in the 1600's and about their tragic deportation by the British.View dykelands, gardens and historic buildings at Grand Pre' National Historic Site.
Lunch:	Lunch will enjoyed at a fine restaurant located in the middle of 60 acres of high-bush blueberries! The buffet meal is always a hit and the meal is followed by a presentation on blueberries.
Afternoon:	Learn all about Fair Trade and the impact Just Us has made on this movement. Wolfville is Canada's first Fair Trade town due to the initial efforts of Just Us. Learn how Just Us purchases and sells coffee, tea, sugar and cocoa and watch chocolate being made. Wolfville is known for its wonderful climate for growing fruits, vegetables and grapes for wine. Visit one of the wonderful farm markets for which Wolfville is known.
Dinner:	Enjoy a wonderful meal at your hotel for the evening, The Old Orchard Inn, where the meal always receives rave reviews.
Evening:	Free time on own in downtown Halifax after dinner on own. Motorcoach transportation provided back to hotel at designated time.

Day 6:

Guided exploration of Halifax/ Pier 21-Canada's "Ellis Island"/ Maritime Museum/Free time on Halifax waterfront/harbour-view restaurant for dinner
(Friday, September 27)

Breakfast:	Buffet breakfast at the Old Orchard Inn prior to departing for Halifax
Morning:	Travel to Halifax where you will enjoy an on-board guided visit of this historic city. Learn all about the Halifax Explosion, the role the city played after the sinking of the Titanic, and enjoy a walk in the beautiful historic public gardens. Your guide will fill you with all kinds of facts presented with humor and intrigue....always a special experience for Road Scholar participants.
Lunch:	You will be enjoying lunch on your own along the beautiful Halifax waterfront followed by some free time to explore museums, craft studios and shops.
Afternoon:	Visit Pier 21-Canada's National Immigration Museum (similar to Ellis Island in the United States). Here you will learn all about the significance of this facility for immigrants to Canada, Home Children, War Brides and as a staging site for the military during two World Wars. Fascinating exhibits, a wonderful film and a dedicated guide make this site come alive. You'll also have a chance to explore the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (on your own) which houses boats and ships of all types and sizes along with artifacts from the Titanic and the Halifax Explosion.
Dinner:	Dinner in Halifax is always a special treat as you dine overlooking the Halifax harbour from the Dartmouth side. The food, the service and the view are second to none.

Hector Heritage Quay-Pictou, Nova Scotia/Ferry to Prince Edward Island/Tour of Eastern PEI/Traditional PEI Lobster Supper
(Saturday, September 28)

Breakfast:	Breakfast on-site at your hotel
Morning:	Travel from Halifax to Pictou where you will visit the museum and quay that highlights the Ship Hector. The Hector brought the first settlers from Scotland to Nova Scotia in 1733 which began the wave of Scottish migration that has had such an impact on the development of the province. Learn about the importance of their voyage and the influence of the Hector families on Pictou, and the rest of North America.
Lunch:	Boxed lunch to enjoy while traveling on the ferry from Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island.
Afternoon:	Travel by ferry across the Northumberland Strait from Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island then enjoy a guided tour of the eastern end of the Island as you make your way back to Stanley Bridge Country Resort.
Dinner:	Your last dinner of the program will be a traditional PEI Lobster Supper (other entree choices available).
Evening:	Free evening after dinner and farewells
