Program intended for grandchildren from 7 - 11 years of age.

Bring a grandchild to experience what life was like in Colonial Plymouth at Plimoth Plantation, a recreation of the town as it was when 17th-century pilgrims came ashore to make the area their home. Discuss the lifestyles of the Pilgrims with an expert and board a recreation of the Mayflower. Experience maritime culture at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, explore the Salt Marsh with a naturalist, and take a guided whale watch voyage.

Plymouth, 35 miles southeast of Boston, was the site of the first permanent European settlement in New England and is now a fishing center with ship-related industries and colorful cranberry bogs. Plymouth Rock and re-creations of Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower are among the sites commemorating the arrival of the pilgrims on Dec. 21, 1620.

The bus departs each airline terminal on the lower level outside the baggage claim areas, at the sign that reads "Scheduled Buses" or “Bus Stop.” Tickets are purchased on the bus with cash only. The bus drops off in Plymouth at the Park & Ride - Rte 3 - Exit 5 (Long Pond Rd) - behind the Information Center.   From Boston and Points North Take Interstate 93 or Interstate 95 South to Route 3 in Braintree. Follow Route 3 South towards Cape Cod to exit 6A. Plymouth is located on Route 3 at Route 44 about 40 minutes south of Boston and 12 miles north of Cape Cod. To get to the John Carver Inn follow the directions "From the North".
  From Cape Cod Take Route 6 West to the Sagamore Bridge - cross over bridge Follow Route 3 North to exit 6 Take exit 6 and bear right onto Route 44 East Follow to traffic light and turn right onto Route 3A Follow Route 3A to the next traffic light and turn right onto Leyden Street The road immediately turns to the left, the John Carver Inn is on the right

Day 2: Plimoth Plantation/Picnic Lunch/Lantern Ghost Town Walk
(Monday, August 12)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel.
 Morning: Visit Plimoth Plantation and explore the grounds on a guided tour and then on your own. You will explore the Wampanoag Village and the Pilgrim Settlement with a museum expert.
 Lunch: Picnic lunch at Plimoth Plantation.
 Afternoon: Enjoy presentations and hands on activities at Plimoth Plantation with the museum historians. Learn to cook over the hearth as the Pilgrims did, and play games as the Pilgrim and Native American children did. Before returning to the hotel, explore the Mayflower II, the replica of the 17th century ship Mayflower boat on Plymouth's harbor.
 Dinner: Dinner at hotel.
 Evening: Enjoy an evening lantern walk and learn about Plymouth's local ghosts.

Day 3: Pilgrim Hall Museum/Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich/Evening Entertainment
(Tuesday, August 13)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel.
 Morning: Spend time exploring the Pilgrim Hall Museum, the nation’s oldest continuously–operating public museum before boarding the bus to drive to Sandwich.
 Lunch: Enjoy lunch at the Heritage Museum and Gardens.
 Afternoon: Explore the garden labyrinth at the Heritage Museum and Gardens, visit the antique car exhibit and the American folk art exhibit, and ride the carousel with a museum educator. Finish the day with an Autos & Assembly Lines workshop This interactive and fun activity provides participants with an understanding of Henry Ford’s innovative use of the assembly line to revolutionize the automotive industry. Participants will test their knowledge of the six simple machines, act out an assembly line, and then work in small groups to complete a LEGO-building competition. Take a bus to Hyannis.

 Evening: Enjoy an evening of games at the hotel

Day 4: Whale Watch/Free time in Downtown Hyannis
(Wednesday, August 14)

 Morning: Free Time to explore Downtown Hyannis
 Lunch: Lunch on the whale watch boat.
 Afternoon: Take a whale watch out of Barnstable Harbor. Throughout your whale watching adventure, expert naturalists will share an intriguing look into the "wonderful world of whales". They will also provide commentary on the local ecology and history of this unique area.
 Dinner: Dinner at hotel.
 Evening: Enjoy the wave pool

Day 5: OceanQuest Boat Ride/Woods Hole Aquarium/Beach Walk/Bonfire
(Thursday, August 15)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at hotel
 Morning: Enjoy a 1 1/2 hour cruise that will actively engage participants in learning oceanography through first-hand observations of natural marine phenomena and data collection. Discover the wonders of ocean science aboard a fully certified and equipped research vessel. As 'guest' scientists, you will rotate from station to station, accompanied by professional scientists, educators and mariners. Collect samples of seawater and learn how weather affects sampling; sample bottom communities using traps, trawl or dredge and collect surface organisms with plankton nets. A great way to learn more about Cape Cod's ecological systems!
 Lunch: Lunch in Woods Hole
 Afternoon: Salt marsh/beach walk.Local guide will include the major concepts listed below in the marsh/beach walk. •Adaptation: Find an example of a bodily adaptation (plant or animal) that enhances survival in a harsh environment. Describe how an animal's behavioral adaptations can increase its chances for survival. •Change: Describe changes that may occur during a day, year or long-term geological basis. Describe how these changes will affect an animal or plant. •Habitat: Find two or three microhabitats and explain how they differ. Describe an organism likely to live in each environment. •Ecosystem: Explain what makes the coastal environment unique to other environments. List five animals and three plants found in each coastal environment. •Energy Cycle: Explain the significance of the sun to the shore environment. Explain why the death of any organism is a necessary part of living. •Human Impact: Give examples of human impact on the shore, both positive and negative. Suggest how humans can lessen negative or strengthen positive impacts. •Interdependence: Describe an animal and/or plant relationship on the shore or in the marsh that demonstrates interdependence. Find a section where an interdependence link has been broken, and identify the cause of the disruption. Participants will connect to the natural world by making themselves part of that world. A personalized approach to "scientific" learning will make participants aware of the vital role THEY play in the health of the world. Continue learning about marine life by exploring the Woods Hole Aquarium to learn more about local marine life.There may even be a chance to see a seal feeding!

Journey Around Cape Cod From A to Z

Whale Port
