Capture Michigan’s Autumn thru Watercolors

Enjoy watercolor painting with a well-known, local artist and instructor. Daily watercolor demonstrations and open painting sessions with individualized assistance. Separate instruction for beginners and more experienced. Basic supplies provided.The watercolor artist will teach how to use reference photographs for use in your watercolor painting. Some sessions outdoors (weather permitting).



Explore Forest Ecology thru Hiking and Photography

Enjoy daily interpretive hikes to learn about the local flora, fauna and the seasonal changes that occur in the fall. Learn how to take good quality photographs with a professional photographer. Photos will be critiqued for strengths and challenges.Photography instruction will be during the first two days of the program. Up to 2 of your photos will be printed to review. Outdoor hikes will be offered to practice new skills.



Tai Chi Chuan: An Ancient Art Of Wellness

Teachings originate from Grand Master Pay, a 17th-generation Taoist from China. Learn about sustaining good health, internal harmony, stress reduction. Breath of life exercises, circle walking, Wu Dan Yuan, six healing sounds will be taught.




Tustin

Tustin, a small village in northwest Michigan, was incorporated in 1893 and today is a perfect stopping point for those en route to one of the area’s recreational destinations, which include many trout streams and family-friendly rivers for canoeing.



Accommodations
Modern adult conference center located on Center Lake, with large, hotel-style rooms. Meals are served buffet-style. Wireless Internet available in all lodges. The Center has earned Green Lodging Michigan Partner certification.

Travel Details
  Start of Program:
Check in between 2:30 - 4:00 pm. Road Scholar orientation, tour and get-acquainted activities begin at 4:30 pm. Dinner is served from 5:30-6:30 pm. You will be staying at Kettunen Center that night.
  End of Program:
Check out by 10:30am. Lunch at 12:00pm. Independent departures after lunch. You will be staying at Kettunen Center the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Completed health form returned to Program Coordinator prior to arrival. Valid photo ID such as driver's license.

Driving time from Lansing to Kettunen Center is approximately one hour and 45 minutes. Sometimes cheaper flights can be found flying into Lansing rather than GRR (Gerald R. Ford International Airport) in Grand Rapids, MI.

Cherry Capital Airport has a limited number of car rentals available during this time and advanced reservations are highly recommended. It is sometimes cheaper to fly into Traverse City than GRR. Travel time is approximately 1 hour.

 
Driving Directions
  Grand Rapids area Take U.S. 131 north (approximately 90 miles) to exit 168 (Tustin). Turn right and go 5 miles to 145th Avenue (just past Center Lake Bible Camp). Turn left. Follow road around to the left into Kettunen Center.
  Lansing Take U.S. 27 north just past Clare to U.S. 10 west. Travel about 8 miles to the M-115 (Cadillac) exit, turn right. Stay on M-115 for approximately 25 miles and turn left on 20 Mile Road (yellow flashing light) towards Tustin. Travel about 8 miles to 145th Avenue and turn right. Follow road around to the left into Kettunen Center.
  Northern Michigan Take I-75 south to U.S. 27 south to M-55 west to U.S. 131 south. Go approximately 8 miles to exit 168 (Tustin). Turn left (east) 5 miles to 145th Avenue (just past Center Lake Bible Camp). Turn left. Follow road around to the left into Kettunen Center.
  Southeast Michigan Take I-75 north to Bay City, go west on U.S. 10 to Clare. After you merge with U.S. 27 (just past Clare), stay in right lane and follow U.S. 10 to M-115 (Cadillac) exit. Stay on M-115 for approximately 25 miles and turn left on 20 Miles Road (yellow flashing light) towards Tustin. Travel about 8 miles to 145th Avenue and turn right. Follow road around to the left into Kettunen Center.

Day 1: Arrival and Orientation/Evening Activity

 Afternoon: Please plan to arrive between 2:30 and 4:30 PM, with an orientation session and tour taking place at 4:30 PM.
 Dinner: A buffet-style dinner is served from 5:30 - 6:30 PM.
 Evening: Get-acquainted activities and introduction to photography with a short hike after dinner.

Day 2: Tai Chi Chuan/Watercolor Demo/Photography/Outdoor Hike/Slide Show
(Monday, October 7)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast served 7:30 - 8:30 AM.
 Morning: Tai Chi Chuan from 8:30 - 10:00 AM. Photography session from 10:30 AM - 12:00 pm.
 Lunch: Lunch served 12:00 - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Beginner watercolor artists instruction with Mary Guntzviller. Photography instruction with Roger Packard for advanced watercolor painters, includes an outdoor hike with cameras. Groups switch.
 Dinner: Dinner served 5:30 - 6:30 PM.
 Evening: Slide show of participants best photographs to be critiqued by Photography instructor.

Day 3: Tai Chi/Watercolor Painting/Hike

 Breakfast: Breakfast served 7:30 - 8:30 AM.
 Morning: Tai Chi from 8:30 - 10:00 AM. Watercolors from 10:30 AM - 12:00 pm.
 Lunch: Lunch served 12:00 - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Watercolor painting 1:15 - 4:15 PM. Outdoor hike, canoe, kayak, paddleboats or pontoon ride with Kettunen Center staff 4:30-5:30 pm.
 Dinner: Dinner served 5:30 - 6:30 PM.
 Evening: Slideshow of watercolor artist's paintings.

Day 4: Tai Chi/Watercolor Demo/Digital Photography/Guest Artist

 Lunch: Lunch served 12:00 - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Outdoor hike, water craft use after lunch. Advanced photography skills session with photography instructor Charles St. Charles. Watercolor painting instruction including an outdoor painting session with instructor.
 Dinner: Dinner served 5:30 - 6:30 PM.
 Evening: Slideshow of photographer Charles St. Charles' photos.

Day 5: Tai Chi/Watercolor Painting/Digital Photography in Computer Lab/Art Show/Storytelling/Talent Night
(Thursday, October 10)

 Morning: Tai chi, Watercolor painting.
 Lunch: Lunch served 12:00 - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Watercolor painting,outdoor painting session (weather permitting), outdoor hike with Kettunen Center staff.
 Dinner: Dinner served 5:30 - 6:30 PM.
 Evening: Apple cider pressing, campfire, storytelling and talents evening.

Day 6: Tai Chi/Wrap Up Activities/Departure

 Lunch: Lunch served 12:00 - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Departure from the center after lunch.
