Program intended for grandchildren from 10 - 18 years of age.

Live aboard the schooner Adventuress — constructed in 1913 as a private yacht and converted into a teaching ship — as you take the helm, trim the sail and absorb the history and traditions of tall ships. Sail through the San Juan Islands by day and anchor at a different harbor each evening.

Activity Particulars

Participants raise sails, prepare meals, keep vessel shipshape. Must be able to climb eight steps up and down a ladder, be able to climb into bunks, and maneuver in small spaces. Beginning sailors welcome.

San Juan Islands

More than 200 individual islands comprise this archipelago off the upper northwest coast of Washington state. Only a handful are home to permanent residents, many of whom stay for the close-knit community unique to Island living.
Accommodations
Coast Guard-inspected, historic, 101-foot landmark schooner; dorm-style upper and lower tiered bunks; no cabins, limited private space. Bring sleeping bag. Toilets and sinks on board. Family-style meals, plentiful vegetarian options.

  Facility amenities: While on board, everyone works together to set the sails, prepare meals and keep the vessel shipshape. Shipboard life provides an experience with a closed ecological system where issues of water conservation, recycling and waste management become more clearly understood. The crew offers a veriety of educational programs including sail theory, nagivation and environmental and marine science workshops.

  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Sound Experience Release Agreement, Medical History Form, Getting to Know You Form. Forms will all be sent by provider upon registration.
  Parking availability:
Pay parking is available in Anacortes, at the Washington State Ferry (WSF) Dock. The ferry runs from Anacortes tor Friday Harbor, where Adventuress is docked. Participants must supply their own transportation to Anacortes (public transit is recommended).

The Airporter Shuttle goes from the airport to Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes. Reservations are required. The shuttle will drop you off approximately 2 blocks from the dock at which Adventuress will be moored.

 
Driving Directions
  From Seattle to Anacortes Anacortes is the gateway to the San Juan Islands. We have switched the start and end location of most programs to make travel arrangements easier. Without a car: SeaTac Airport to Anacortes: Take the Airporter Super Shuttle from SeaTac Airport directly to downtown Anacortes. It takes approximately 2.5 hours. For reservations and information, contact Airporter Super Shuttle. The shuttle stops in Cap Sante Marina. By float plane: For an added adventure, you can take a float plane to the San Juan Islands. From the float plane stop in Friday Harbor, you will need to take the ferry and a shuttle or taxi from the ferry terminal in Anacortes to Cap Sante Marina. Float planes are available from downtown Seattle directly to Friday Harbor Marina. Take the Airporter Super Shuttle from SeaTac to the Kenmore Air Terminal on Lake Union. Seattle Lake Union to Friday Harbor: Daily flights from Lake Union are available from Kenmore Air. For reservations and information contact Kenmore Air. By Victoria Clipper: The Victoria Clipper sails daily from Friday Harbor departing Seattle at 7:45am and arriving in Friday Harbor at 11:15am, or departing Friday Harbor at 4:30pm and arriving to Seattle Pier 69 at 7:15pm. From Friday Harbor, you would need to take a ferry to Anacortes and a shuttle or taxi from Anacortes to Cap Sante Marina. With a car: SeaTac Airport to Anacortes: Take Interstate 5 North from Seattle to exit 221. Turn Left on WA 534W, then slight Right onto Fir Island Road. Turn right on Browns Slough Rd. Turn Left on Best Road. Turn left on Route 20 West and follow signs to Anacortes. Do NOT follow signs to Port Townsend Ferry. Turn right on R Avenue. Continue onto Q Avenue. Turn right on 11th Avenue. The marina will be straight ahead, and there is overnight parking off of 9th Street. It takes approximately 2 hours to drive from the airport. Daily Schedule

Day 1: Meeting your shipboard community, learning how to live aboard the historic schooner Adventuress, setting sail for the first time.
(Monday, July 15)
   
 Afternoon: 1:30 pm Participants arrive & board Adventuress Group introductions, bunk sign-up, participants stow gear Participants are organized into 3 watch groups (8-10 individuals) and meet their watch leaders for the week. 2-6 pm Participants help set sail as Adventuress sails toward her first anchorage. Participants work in orientation stations, 3 hands-on introductions to life aboard ship (how to use the heads, below decks layout, daily schedule flow, etc), deck orientation (learn new terminology & deck layout), and line handling safety (how to secure a line to a belaying pin, secure a line to a cleat, and general safety procedures on deck). As time allows, participants may take part in learning how to sail, join an informal lesson about marine ecology of Puget Sound, or have some personal down time.
 Dinner: Dinner 6pm - Meals all week are vegetarian and are plentiful, nutritious and served family style.
 Evening: 6:30 pm One watch is responsible for washing dishes, the others prepare a presentation, game, or skit for the group. 8 pm Evening program: a chance for all participants and crew to gather in the ship’s main cabin for 1-1.5 hours of songs, stories, and interactive skits. The Program Coordinator (PC) will lead the evening program as a chance to share some stories, laughs, and ultimately build community which is so critical to a successful voyage. The program concludes as the First Mate orients participants to anchor watch, in which 1-4 participants stand watch on deck for one hour during the night, to ensure that Adventuress is secure at anchor. 10 pm Participants stand anchor watch in one hour increments until 7 am. One crew member stands with 2-3 participants. Duties include checking and recording anchor bearings every 20 minutes, below decks bilge checks, and waking the next watch.

Day 2: Setting sails, rotating through several engaging educational stations that could include learning about plankton, microplastics, navigation, and more. Going ashore to explore one of the San Juan Islands.

 Breakfast: Breakfast 7:30am
 Morning: 8 am, Participants and crew begin morning chores (one watch washes dishes, one watch cleans below decks, and one watch prepares the deck for sailing. 9 am, All hands on deck to set sails and haul back anchor. Adventuress underway. 10 am, Daily rotations begin, including 'deck watch' (line handling, bow watch, helm rotation, below decks checks), environmental education learning stations, and down-time. This cycle continues throughout the morning and afternoon.
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Between 4 and 6 pm, Participants strike sail, Adventuress drops anchor, Deck is tidied up, When conditions allow, participants may climb aloft using safety climbing gear, spend time on deck, or sail or row small skiff along with a crew member. One watch begins dinner.
 Dinner: Dinner 6pm
 Evening: 6:30 pm One watch is responsible for washing dishes, the other two prepare a presentation, skit, or game for evening program. 8 pm Evening program, including presentations by each watch group. 10 pm Participants stand anchor watch in one hour increments until 7 am.

Day 3: Continued sailing and education stations. Opportunities to climb aloft, sail or row our small dinghy, and participate in other fun shipboard games and activities.

 Morning: 8 am, Participants and crew begin morning chores (one watch washes dishes, one watch cleans below decks, and one watch prepares the deck for sailing. 9 am, All hands on deck to set sails and haul back anchor. Adventuress underway. 10 am, Daily rotations begin, including 'deck watch' (line handling, bow watch, helm rotation, below decks checks), environmental education learning stations, and down-time. This cycle continues throughout the morning and afternoon.
 Lunch: Lunch included.
 Afternoon: Between 4 and 6 pm, Participants strike sail, Adventuress drops anchor, Deck is tidied up, When conditions allow, participants may climb aloft using safety climbing gear, spend time on deck, or sail or row small skiff along with a crew member. One watch begins dinner.

Day 4: More exploration of the San Juan Islands under sail, another opportunity to head ashore, continued sailing and educational stations.

 Morning: 8 am, Participants and crew begin morning chores (one watch washes dishes, one watch cleans below decks, and one watch prepares the deck for sailing. 9 am, All hands on deck to set sails and haul back anchor. Adventuress underway. 10 am, Daily rotations begin, including 'deck watch' (line handling, bow watch, helm rotation, below decks checks), environmental education learning stations, and down-time. This cycle continues throughout the morning and afternoon.
 Lunch: Lunch included.

This cycle continues throughout the morning and afternoon.

Day 6: Closing circle in which everyone has the opportunity to share closing thoughts with the group. As we come into the dock we will take time to take a group photo.
(Saturday, July 20)
   
 Breakfast: 7 am Participants and crew wake-up while one watch cooks breakfast. 7:30 am Participants muster on deck to share thoughts and experiences from the previous night’s anchor watch, discuss plans for the day, and prepare for breakfast. Participants that cooked perform an original skit. Crew members hold morning meeting to discuss the day’s plans while participants eat.
 Morning: 8 am, Participants and crew begin morning chores (one watch washes dishes, one watch cleans below decks, and one watch prepares the deck for sailing. The final day entails a thorough cleaning of each cabin, called a Field Day. Presented as a responsibility to Adventuress as their home for the week. Adventuress hauls back anchor and sets sail toward final port. 10:30 am Closing muster circle under sail in close proximity to marina. Participants are presented with signed certificates from the crew. Participants are encouraged to share highlights and memories from their trip.
 Lunch: Participants will eat lunch at 11:30am. Once lunch has been finished, participants will help to lower sails one last time and will motor into port. Adventuress will arrive in Anacortes at 1pm. Prior to disembarking, group photos are taken with participants and crew.
