Days 1-3: Arrival Portland (Ore.):

An expert-led walking excursion introduces you to Portland, including its history and some fun facts. This excursion offers a chance to become familiar with the city’s public transportation enabling you to enjoy the rest of the day exploring independently; you may wish to visit the Portland Art Museum, the Lan Su Chinese Garden or Powell’s City of Books. Portland is known for its variety of food choices and emphasis on farm-to-table cuisine. With suggestions from local experts to help, select two lunch spots and one dinner at restaurants or even food carts of your choice. Learn about the city’s fascinating history from “Stumptown” to “The City of Roses” in a presentation by a local historian. On the afternoon of the third day, meet the rest of your fellow participants and set sail on your voyage. Lodging: Elegant, historic downtown hotel with indoor swimming pool.

Hotel check in begins at 3:00 PM, program registration begins at 4:00 PM in the lobby, program reception begins at 5:00 PM. You will be staying at Embassy Suites Portland Downtown that night.
  End of Program:
Hotel check out by 12:00 PM. Store luggage, explore, then transfer to hospitality room for shipboard based program. You will be staying at Embassy Suites Portland Downtown the night before.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required.
  Parking availability:
Best option is to park at airport for $10 per day (7th day free) in the economy lot and take public transportation, commercial shuttle or taxi to the program site. Self parking at hotel is $25 per day (no in /out privileges). Valet parking is $32 per day.

One convenient travel option is to use Portland’s light rail system, known as MAX. Instructions from the Airport MAX Station: Board MAX Red Line to City Center & Beaverton TC at airport station and get off at Oak/ SW 1st Ave MAX Station. Walk north on SW 1st Ave (you will be walking against traffic after the intersection at Oak). Turn left on SW Pine St. Walk west on SW Pine St to the hotel. Total walking distance is 0.2 mile.

  Embassy Suites Downtown/From East Take I-84 West. Follow the City Center signs over the Morrison Bridge. Turn right at the first stop light onto 2nd Avenue. Go 4 blocks to Ash Street and turn left. Go 1 block and turn left. Go 1 block to pine and turn right. The hotel entrance will be on the right hand side.
  Embassy Suites Downtown/From North Take I-5 South to exit 302A (Rose Quarter). Follow City Center signs over the Broadway Bridge. Stay in the left lane, this will put you onto Broadway. Go 8 blocks to Burnside and turn left. Go 4 blocks to 3rd and turn right. Go 2 blocks to Pine and turn right. The hotel is on the right hand side.

 Dinner: Enjoy dinner at the hotel followed by introductions and a program orientation.

Day 2: Walking Tour/Free Time/Happy Hour/Dinner on Your Own
(Friday, October 18)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast at Hotel
 Morning: A local expert will lead a walking tour of downtown Portland to orient you to the city of roses. He will provide some history and fun facts--even some that the locals may not know!
 Lunch: Now that you know a bit about the city and can find a lunch spot on your own, have a fun time exploring with suggestions from your Road Scholar leader.
 Afternoon: Discover the city by visiting some of the local spots as you explore on your own. Portland's public transportation can provide excellent access to many sites in the city. Maybe it will be the Chinese Garden, the Portland Art Museum or an afternoon of books at Powells Book Store. It's your choice! Return to the hotel to gather with your fellow adventurers for some cocktails and hors d'oeurves. Share stories about your discoveries.
 Dinner: Dinner will be on your own to find a restaurant in this foodie town. Your Road Scholar leader will provide suggestions.

Day 3: Portland History/Explore Some More/Transfer to Ship
(Saturday, October 19)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast at Hotel
 Morning: You will be joined by a local historian to learn about Portland's fascinating history from "Stump Town" to "The City of Roses." Then check out of the hotel, store your luggage and enjoy some time on the town.
 Lunch: Find a local restaurant to enjoy some more of Portland's specialties on your own. Maybe you could try one of the famous food carts--Portland is well known for these funky, but delicious carts with many local specialties. Then find your way to the Marriott Downtown Waterfront Hotel by 2:30 pm. Transportation will be provided from the Embassy Suites to the hosptality suite if desired.
 Afternoon: Meet your fellow travelers at our hospitality suite at the Marriott Downtown Waterfront Hotel prior to transfering to the ship for your travels up the Columbia Gorge!

The Pittock Mansion was home to Portland pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock from 1914 to 1919.
