State vs. state, brother vs. brother — experience the tranquil fields of what was the scene of some of the Civil War’s most devastating but pivotal battles. Explore the cultural components and differing ideologies that led to the outbreak of war through on-site lectures, living-history demonstrations and glimpses into the war songs of the era. Journey just south of the Mason-Dixon Line through tranquil rural fields and quaint towns that belie the region’s turbulent past.
Highlights
• Meet with Civil War reenactors and learn more about the uniforms, weapons and stories of both sides of the battle. • Walk through the site of several famous battles as an expert repaints the picture of what happened at each key battle site. • Explore the historic waterways, the C&O Canal and views of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah at Jefferson Rock, and admire the postbellum architecture of Harpers Ferry.

Sharpsburg
Sharpsburg lies east of the Potomac River near one of its tributaries, Antietam Creek, made famous by the pivotal Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War. Sharpsburg is part of Maryland’s Washington County, which attracts history fans with its numerous Civil War sites and nature buffs with its many national, state and local parks.

| | Brad Wyand is a young-but-seasoned living history interpreter, having been reenacting Civil War battles as both a Federal and Confederate soldier for more than six years. He currently reenacts a Confederate soldier with the First Tennessee Company I. Brad’s interest in history also led him to work at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, site of John Brown’s raid and attempt to start an armed slave revolt. | | | | Roger Swartz
| | Roger Swartz is a graduate of Albright College and Lehigh University. He has presented 18th-century living history programs at the Smithsonian and Mount Vernon Estate, and is also an instructor in the continuing education programs at Harrisburg Area Community College, Elizabethtown College, Frederick Community College and Hagerstown Community College. His published works include “Frankstown: Anatomy of an Ambush,” and “Field of Honor: The Battle of Fort Freeland, July 28, 1779.”
