The natural beauty of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks inspires your creativity and two professional painters help expand your vision using watercolors, oils or acrylics in this painting adventure in eastern Utah.




Highlights

• Enjoy plein air painting daily to take advantage of outstanding light and clear air in select locations in Arches and Canyonlands National Park and the Colorado River Canyon.
• Individual attention by your instructors helps to understand the importance of light, composition, drawing and color harmony on canvas and paper.
• Each evening fellow participants and instructors offer encouraging critiques for the day’s paintings.

Walking up to one mile; carry easel and materials up to one-quarter mile. All skill levels. Elevations of 4,000-6,400 feet.

Moab

Site of a busy Colorado River crossing before the construction of the railroads, the town of Moab grew into an important mining community with the discovery of potash, manganese, oil and gas deposits in the early 1900s. Today Moab is a gateway to Arches and Canyonlands national parks and a popular base for mountain bikers and off-roaders.

Cathy Goodale

Cathy Goodale is a dedicated, persistent and educated artist whose style reflects her individuality. “If you pay attention, art transcends all parts of life and makes the ordinary things in life a painting,” she says. Her career is filled with painting, teaching and learning. She grew up in Denver and attended Stephens College and University of Northern Colorado, graduating with a degree in fine arts. She also studied commercial art under William Sanderson at Denver University.

We strongly recommend that you arrive a day early due to erratic schedules and possible flight delays at all points. Driving Directions
  Moab From All Directions Moab from Denver: Moab is a 6-7 hour drive from Denver. The best route is I-70 West to Utah State Highway 128 South (Exit 202 off of I-70 in Utah), then left onto Utah State Highway 128 into Moab. You can go twenty-two miles further on I-70 to Exit 180 and go south on US 19, 33 miles into Moab. They’re about the same time; however, State Highway 128 is one of the most spectacular drives on the planet. Moab from Salt Lake City: Moab is a 234, 4.5 hour drive from Salt Lake City. Take Interstate 15 56 miles South to Provo, UT and US Highway 6. Take US 6 south 123 miles to the Junction with Interstate 70. Travel East on Interstate 70, 24 miles to Junction with US Highway 191, traveling South on US 191 33 miles to Moab. Moab from Las Vegas: Moab is 7 hours, 461 miles from Las Vegas, NV. Take Interstate 15 North 247 miles to Junction with Interstate 70 East. Travel East I-70 for 182 miles to Junction with US Highway 191 traveling South on US 191 33 miles to Moab. . Meet at the hotel address: 71 West 200 North.

Day 1: Orientation and Introductions
(Sunday, October 13)
   
 Arrive To: ESSENTIAL:Hotel Check-in 3-5 please plan to arrrive before 5 PM. We will meet in the Lobby at 5 pm to begin Introductions and travel to our dinner restaurant.
 Dinner: Restaurant
 Evening: Orientation and introductions.

Day 2: Arches National Park
(Monday, October 14)

Note: All skill levels welcome; Bring all necessary art supplies, easel (See attached list) Elevations: 4,000-6,400 feet; Warm sunny to cool rainy and gusty days; early mornings chilly. Participants must be able to walk up to 1/4 mile carrying easel and other materials over rocky, sandy, rough terrain.



   
 Breakfast: Restaurant
 Morning: Painting in Arches National Park.There will be a short demonstration each day. Course will plan to work in the field as much as possible taking advantage of the locations and varied light. Critiques of day's work will occur voluntarily each day by participants and instructors.
 Lunch: Box lunch
 Afternoon: Continue painting in Arches National Park
 Dinner: Restaurant meal
 Evening: Meeting to discuss day's painting and plan next day.

Day 3: Deadhorse State Park and Canyonlands National Park-Island in the Sky District
(Tuesday, October 15)
   
 Breakfast: Restaurant meal
 Morning: Painting in Deadhorse State Park and Canyonlands National Park. There will be a short demonstration each day. Course will plan to work in the field as much as possible taking advantage of the locations and varied light.
 Lunch: Box lunch
 Afternoon: Continue painting in the State or National Park
 Dinner: Dinner on own to sample cuisine of Moab with time for shopping or browsing the downtown.
 Evening: Free Time

Day 4: Castle Valley and Colorado River Canyon
(Wednesday, October 16)
   
 Breakfast: Restaurant Meal
 Morning: Painting in Castle Valley in the Colorado River Canyon. There will be a short demonstration each day. Course will plan to work in the field as much as possible taking advantage of the locations and varied light.
 Lunch: Box lunch
 Afternoon: Continue painting in Castle Valley
 Dinner: Restaurant Meal
 Evening: Instructors slide show of their work

Day 5: Colorado River Canyon/Arches National Park
(Thursday, October 17)
   
 Breakfast: Restaurant Meal
 Morning: Varied options for painting locations along Colorado River

 Afternoon: Painting in Arches National Park
 Dinner: Restaurant Meal
 Evening: Closing remarks and final optional critique
