Portland (Oregon)

Portlanders live a life rich in the arts, surrounded by natural beauty and conveniently situated near the Pacific Coast and Columbia River Gorge. The City of Roses is a walker's paradise filled with parks, fountains and unique neighborhoods.

Peter Chausse
A Massachusetts native, Peter Chausse is a teacher and passionate local historian in Portland, Ore. Though a position with the U.S. Forest Service originally brought him to the Pacific Northwest, Peter is now an instructor at The Heritage Institute, a branch of Antioch University. He runs his own small walking excursion business in Portland and enjoys leading field trips with Road Scholar, during which he shares his knowledge of local art and natural history.
 
Joseph Couture
Joseph Couture is an expert on the geology and history of the Pacific Northwest. He studied geology at Portland State University and criminology at Southern Oregon University, and combined the degrees for his interest in forensic geology (geo-criminology). He is an accomplished lecturer on topics ranging from the Hawaiian Volcanoes to the Granite Plutons of Acadia National Park in Maine.
 
Kathy Block-Brown
Kathy Block-Brown graduated at the top of her class from the Le Cordon Bleu program at the Western Culinary Institute in Portland, Ore., and achieved the Certified Culinarian level of the American Culinary Federation. As a sous chef and staff instructor at Portland's premiere cooking school, Kathy has worked with many of the city’s outstanding chefs and restaurateurs. She is a regular volunteer at Sisters of the Road Café, a restaurant that primarily serves low-income and homeless residents.
 
Heidi Yorkshire
Heidi Yorkshire has had a unique view of America’s artisan food revolution as a journalist, author and entrepreneur. Heidi contributed travel, wine and food stories to Bon Appetit, Travel & Leisure, Wine Spectator and many other publications for more than two decades. She wrote the weekly wine column for The Oregonian for five years, and is the author and publisher of two wine books, Wine Savvy (an IACP/Julia Child Cookbook Award finalist) and Simply Wine. A Portland resident for more than 20 years, she reviewed restaurants for Willamette Week and was a judge for the James Beard Foundation Restaurant Awards. She was one of the early organizers of Portland Farmers Market, and spent many years on the market board of directors. She is the founder and director of Food by Hand Seminars, where she teaches aspiring food entrepreneurs to run successful, sustainable businesses.
 
Abby Fammartino
Abby Fammartino has been cooking for almost her entire life. Chef Abby attended the Natural Gourmet Institute of Food and Health in Manhattan, worked at Greens in San Francisco and served as the chef on a National Geographic Expedition in the Aleutian Islands. She has also worked as a private chef and caterer in Philadelphia, New York, and Seattle prior to founding Abby’s Table in Portland, Ore. A world traveler, she brings inventive twists on local and seasonal ingredients in her recipes.
 
Marc Moscato
Marc Moscato is executive director of Know Your City, a non profit organization whose mission is to connect people to place through explorations, lectures, publications and youth programs. He has a long interest in public art, and been involved with several public art projects and publications, including "Walls Of Pride: A Tour of African American Public Art" in Portland and "Art For the Millions: The Enduring Legacy of the Works Progress Administration." Also a filmmaker, his short films and videos have screened at film festivals, theaters and non-traditional spaces across the country.

Day 2: Downtown Walking Tour/Food History Lecture/McMenamins Edgefield History and Brewery Tour/Public Art Lecture
(Monday, July 8)

Note: Downtown walking tour is approximately one mile at a leisurely pace, with some periods of standing.
   
 Breakfast: Full breakfast buffet at the hotel
 Morning: Enjoy a leisurely walk through the streets of downtown Portland with a local expert who will show you the special art and architecture of the city. See and learn tidbits many Portland residents may not even know!
 Lunch: With a menu that changes weekly, lunch at Wildwood Restaurant brings you the best the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Most of the ingredients in their tasty meals can be found within miles of the restaurant.
 Afternoon: Over the past decade, Portland has become one of the most important food cities in the country. Learn from a food industry expert how and why Portland grew its food culture from regular suburban fare into a food lover's mecca with a focus on locally grown and sustainable sources.
 Dinner: Visit McMenamins Edgefield, built in 1911 as a county poor farm. The historic building has been carefully restored into a European style hotel, with two restaurants, pubs and bars, winery, brewery, distillery, golf course, gardens, spa and a movie theatre. Enjoy the history tour of the building, followed by a brewery tour. You will have some time to explore this fascinating piece of history on your own. We will enjoy a delicious dinner with beer tasting in one of the site's private rooms.
 Evening: Back at the hotel, a local expert will expand on Portland's public art scene, including sculptures, fountains, murals, paintings, photography, and other public expressions of creativity thanks, in large part, to the "Percent for Art" program that funds it.

Day 3: Mt. Hood/Columbia Gorge
(Tuesday, July 9)
   
 Breakfast: Full breakfast buffet in hotel
 Morning: All day field trip to Mt Hood/Columbia Gorge. Nestled midway to the summit of Mt. Hood is Timberline Lodge, a National Historic Landmark. Constructed of mammoth timbers and native stone in 1937, Timberline Lodge stands today as a tribute to the rugged spirit of the Pacific Northwest. Explore this beautiful lodge with a forest service park ranger. Travel the Columbia Gorge and hear about its history through a local expert.
 Lunch: Gourmet lunch at Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood.
 Afternoon: Travel to Hood River, wind surfing capital of the world! It is also known for growing luscious apples, pears, cherries, peaches and other fruits, and for its view of the majestic snow capped peak of Mt. Hood. Continue your travels through the Columbia Gorge and hear about its history through a local expert. A visit to the area is not complete without a visit to its breathtaking waterfalls. Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States. Enjoy the spectacular beauty of this scenic area.
 Dinner: Dinner will be on your own to explore the local cuisine.
 Evening: Free evening to continue exploring Portland on your own or relax at the hotel.

Day 4: Farmer's Market/Old Church Concert/Portland Art Museum/Pearl District/Paragon
(Wednesday, July 10)

Note: Pearl District walk is approximately one mile; option to walk a shorter distance than others in the group is available.
   
 Breakfast: Full breakfast buffet at the hotel
 Morning: Visit Portland's Farmers Market to see the abundance of local produce. Hear from local farmers and spend some time exploring.
 Lunch: Select your lunch at the market with a voucher to spend as you decide!
 Afternoon: Walk to Portland's Old Church which has been a Portland landmark since its completion in 1883. The building is no longer used as a church, but as an unique community building. Listen to a concert as you marvel at its stained glass windows and other details.

Visit Portland's Art Museum, the oldest art museum in the Pacific Northwest, which has amassed a diverse collection numbering over 35,000 objects and works of art since its founding in 1892.

From the art museum, hop on the Portland Streetcar for a ride to the Pearl District. A local guide will ride with you and share his intimate knowledge of the colorful history of Portland's "street scene." Your guide will take you on a walking tour through "the Pearl". This eclectic mix of trendy retail shops, art galleries, restaurants, parks and housing in one of the country's largest urban renewal districts was once Portland's industrial center.

 Dinner: Enjoy a fabulous dinner of American brasserie-style cuisine at a popular restaurant located in the heart of the Pearl District.

Day 5: International Rose Test Garden/Japanese Gardens/Chinese Garden/Abby's Table Supper Club
(Thursday, July 11)
   
 Breakfast: Full breakfast buffet at the hotel.
 Morning: Spend the morning exploring two exceptional gardens in Washington Park. Founded in 1917, Portland's International Rose Test Garden is the oldest official, continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States. In the beginning, even though World War I was raging in Europe, hybridists sent roses from around the world to Portland's garden for testing and to keep the new hybrids safe from being destroyed by the bombing in Europe.

The primary purpose of the garden is to serve as a testing ground for new rose varieties. The City of Portland Gold Medal Awards are issued annually to the best introductions. See these roses in bloom and enjoy the lovely views of downtown Portland.

Nestled in the scenic west hills of Portland, the Japanese Garden is a haven of tranquil beauty. The garden includes a formal Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and an unsurpassed view of Mt. Hood. Enjoy the peace and tranquility.

 Lunch: Back downtown, you'll be treated to another fabulous meal with amazing views of the city from the 30th floor of Portland's second tallest building, the US Bancorp Tower, locally referred to as "Big Pink".
 Afternoon: Spend the afternoon exploring the Portland Classical Chinese Garden. The Garden's mission is to cultivate an oasis of tranquil beauty and harmony to inspire, engage, and educate our global community in the appreciation of a richly authentic Chinese culture. See this wonderful garden placed within a one block area inside Portland's China town. You will be transported into a little piece of China.
 Dinner: After a break back at the hotel, you'll head out to experience the up and coming trend of supper club dining at Abby's Table. Chef Abby, along with other local craftsmen, will answer all your questions about sustainable food sourcing while you savor a unique Portland menu.
 Evening: Dinner extends into the evening.

  Pittock Mansion
The Pittock Mansion was home to Portland pioneers Henry and Georgiana Pittock from 1914 to 1919.
