Experience Southern Utah’s extraordinary hiking in the stunning realm of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument’s vast 1.9 million acres. The monument is a geologic sampler spanning eons of time with a huge variety of formations, world-class paleontological sites, multicolored cliffs, pinnacles and slot canyons.

Escalante

The Escalante area was settled in 1875 and the town named after Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante, who had passed through the region in 1776. For bikers, fishers, golfers and skiers, Escalante is a gateway to the grandeur of southern Utah and a handy base for exploring Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and several national parks.



St. George

The largest city in south-central Utah is at the center of the region's arches, mesas, pinnacles and buttes, in close proximity to Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon national parks, as well as Lake Powell and prehistoric archaeological sites.



Kanab

Colorful sand dunes, lava flows, lush fields of alfalfa, and stark mesas: This Southwestern city is a picturesque gateway to the area’s scenic destinations, including the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, as well as Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks.

Darrell McMahon has worked in natural resource management for more than three decades and has extensive experience as a wildlife biologist, entomologist and habitat biologist. In addition to teaching college courses in geology and natural history, Darrell has taught at Dixie State University and Southern Utah University the past seven years and has knowledge of natural history, forest ecology and wildlife.

The historic district offers restored pioneer homes and buildings. This facility is used specifically for Road Scholar and other educational groups it is not used as housing for college students. St. George has beautiful red rock cliff and lava rock mesa as back drop with larger mountains and rock formations that can be seen in the distance. A lounge area with couches, DirecTV, a refrigerator, soda pop machine, guest laundry and microwave are available for your use. We also have a beautiful heated pool and hot tub for your enjoyment. The rooms do not have phones or televisions, but a public phone is available at the front desk.

Driving Directions
  Interstate I-15 St. George, Utah is easily accessed on I-15. Travel from north or southbound I-15, exit at St. George Blvd. It is exit number 8. Turn and travel west on St. George Blvd. (If you are arriving from the north, you turn right onto St. George Blvd or if from the south you turn left.) Travel west 9 blocks to 200 East Street. Turn left and travel two blocks. At 100 South turn right. Travel 1/2 block to College Inn. The address is 123 East 100 South. Enter the parking lot on the east side of the building. Free parking is available behind the building.
Elevation Note: The highest elevation at 8,300'. We walk various trails and view points.

Equipment Requirements: We suggest you bring walking shoes with good tread and hiking pole for the daily outdoor exploration. Some hikes may include getting your feet wet.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Welcome and introductions in the College Inn classroom.
(Monday, April 22)
   
 Arrive To: 3:00 - 5:00 pm (Mountain Time) Arrive at the College Inn for check in. The College Inn is located at 123 East 100 South in St. George, Utah. It is about 6 blocks from the Dixie State College Campus.
 Dinner: 5:30 pm - Transfer to Dixie State College's Red Rock Cafe for a delicious banquet dinner.
 Evening: Following dinner have a brief welcome orientation and overview of our daily activities and itinerary.

Day 2: Explore the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument with our geologist!
(Tuesday, April 23)
   
 Breakfast: 7:00 - 8:00 am - Enjoy a continental breakfast at the College Inn which includes hard boiled eggs, hot oatmeal, cereal, fruit, yogurt, pastries, toast, milk & juice.
 Morning: Check out and depart for exploration into the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Hike Lick Wash, a 2 to 4 mile round trip. This slot canyon excels in beauty and adventure and the added benefit is that it's remote and quiet.
 Lunch: Box Lunch on the trail.
 Afternoon: Our afternoon hike in the Grand Staircase takes us to Willis Creek Wash, a 2 to 4 mile round trip hike. It's an amazing slot canyon adventure with narrow cliff walls and a flat, stony stream-bed path to walk through. Towering slickrock forms the walls of this incredible slot canyon. Check in at hotel.
 Dinner: 6:00 - 7:00 pm - Buffet Dinner at Ruby's Cowboy Buffet & Steak Room including BBQ Beef & Pork Ribs, Baked Chicken, Asian Orange Chicken, Baked Pollock, Cornbread, Soup & Salad.
 Evening: Free Time

Day 3: Travel through the heart of the Grandstaircase
(Wednesday, April 24)
   
 Breakfast: 7:00 - 8:00 am - Breakfast at Ruby's Cowboy Buffet which includes fresh fruit, yogurt, assorted baked goods, cereal, scrambled eggs, french toast, oatmeal, smoked bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, coffee, and assorted teas, juice and milk.
 Morning: Check out of hotel and travel the Cockscomb Road - this takes us through the heart of the Grandstaircase. Hike Lower Hackberry Canyon. This hike is one of the more scenic and popular canyon routes in the western half of the Monument. We'll venture 2-3 miles upstream from the southern end of the canyon, enjoying the cool canyon environment with its shallow flowing water and steep canyon walls.
 Lunch: Box lunch on the trail.
 Afternoon: This afternoon we explore Cottonwood Narrows Wash, a 2 mile hike through a beautiful Navajo Sandstone canyon accessed through a small valley of dramatic red and white rocky outcrops. We'll then travel along Cottonwood Canyon road for a visit to Grovesnor Arch. Grosvenor Arch is a unique double arch located about nine miles southeast of Kodachrome Basin State Park. The massive sandstone formation stands 152 feet high and spans 92 feet.
 Dinner: Dutch Oven Dinner at Wild West Retreat. Including BBQ Chicken Breast, Dutch Oven potatoes, Dutch Oven baked beans, coleslaw, scones with honey-butter and a Brownie Sundae for dessert.
 Evening: Geology class in meeting room.

Day 4: Hike and explore the Grand Staircase Scenic Beauty!
(Thursday, April 25)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at Prospector Inn Cafe.
 Morning: Enjoy scenic back-country as we travel on the Hole-in-the-Rock trail. First we take a short hike to Covered Wagon Wheel Bridge then onto Cedar Wash Arch. We'll then take a short drive to the many hoodoos and uneven pillars of sandstone at Devils Garden.
 Lunch: Return to the Grandstaircase Escalante's Visitor Center for a visit and lunch break.
 Afternoon: In the afternoon we'll hike the sandy bench along the upper Escalante river, one of the premier hikes in the GSENM. As the river carves through the Navajo Sandstone the cliffs gradually rise from 400 to over 1,000 feet above the serpentine canyon. The soaring walls are often glazed with dark blue desert varnish. Participants will have to wade through ankle deep fords at several crossings. A huge alcove appears at the base of the North wall after 2.8 miles, where you will carefully discover ancient petroglyphs a link to the past Native Americans who once walked this same trail.
 Dinner: Dinner at Prospector Inn.
 Evening: Free time.

Day 5: Calf Creek Falls hike in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument/Capture awe-inspiring sunset and create incredible memories!
(Friday, April 26)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at Prospector Inn Cafe.
 Morning: This morning's scenic hike is to Lower Calf Creek Falls, a 6 mile round trip. The crystal clear waters of Calf Creek take a 130' plunge over a sandstone cliff into a transparent pool of cool water.
 Lunch: Box lunch
 Afternoon: After lunch we'll hike Long Canyon Slot, a short half mile hike into a bright red wall narrow canyon. Its towering walls shoot 600 feet up towards the crisp blue skies creating a stunning color contrast. We then proceed on to a 1 mile hike out to strike valley overlook at the end of the Burr trail. Here we have the best view of the waterpocket fold, a 100 mile long monocline which is the heart and soul of Capitol Reef National Park.
 Dinner: Closing dinner at Cowboy Blues. A local favorite featuring delicious home cooked meals in a Western decor setting. Choose from BBQ Ribs, Baked Trout, Grilled Steaks, Blackend Salmon, or Fajitas. Save room for pie or cheese cake for dessert.

Day 6: Morning hike Bryce Canyon National Park
(Saturday, April 27)

Note: Independent departures at 2:30 pm.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at Prospector Inn Cafe.
 Morning: 7:30 am - Check out Travel to Bryce Canyon National Park and hike Navajo Loop Trail. This trail takes us down the rim from Sunset Point, through the narrow corridors of Wall Street, past the Silent City, past an intersection with Queens Garden Loop Trail, and the top of Peekaboo Loop Trail, before ascending the rim of the amphitheatre again at Sunset Point. The trail requires hikers to descend 800 feet down the side of the Bryce rim, and then at the end of the hike to climb right back up that slope.
 Lunch: Box lunch on the trail.
 Afternoon: Return to St. George. Independent departures after 2:30 PM. The shuttle to Las Vegas leaves the College Inn at 3:30 pm which will get you to the Las Vegas Airport at 5:15 pm. If you need to stay an additional night to catch an earlier shuttle to Las Vegas Airport there will be no charge for your room. At the trails end, we leave you with this parting thought!   St. George, Utah Historic Sites, restored pioneer buildings and homes
There are 27 Historic Sites, restored pioneer buildings and homes all within walking distance of the College Inn. When you arrive, we have a map highlighting each building or home. During the summer months a special tour called St. George Live is offered. The guides dress in pioneer clothing and tell the history as though they were the pioneer that built the home, etc. If you only have a little time to visit the historic sites, you will want to include the following. The Visitor Center offers information, exhibits, and a 22-minute award-winning film which plays on the hour and half-hour. Publications and maps are available for purchase through our Bryce Canyon Natural History Association. We generally go to the visitor center as part of your Road Scholar program.
