George Deutsch

A historian whose specialty lies with the Civil War and the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, George Deutsch is the co-founder of several historical organizations including the Erie Maritime Museum. He has taught at Chautauqua since 2005, and is currently writing a book on the untold history of its last year in the Civil War. He has been honored by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and received the Local History Award in 2003 from the Erie County Historical Society.
 
Kaye Lindauer

For more than 30 years, Kaye Lindauer taught graduate and adult education courses in storytelling and literature at Syracuse University. Kaye continues to conduct weekend retreats for adults in storytelling and personal development, freelance storytelling, conference speaking, and instructing for adult education programs.

Driving Directions
  Albany and North Take I 90 west toward Erie and exit 60 at Westfield NY. Turn left onto Rte 394 and proceed 11 miles to Chautauqua Institution Main Gate entrance. Follow directional signs to the Athenaeum Hotel.
  Buffalo and East Take I 90 west to exit 60-Westfield, NY. Turn left onto Rte 394 and proceed 11 miles to Cahutauqua Institution Main Gate Entrance. Follow directional signs to Athenaeum Hotel.
  Cleveland, Erie and West Take I 90 east toward Buffalo to exit I 86- exit 37. Proceed 20 miles on I 86 to exit 7 - Rte 33. Exit and turn left heading East-proceed 4 miles to Rte 394. Turn right onto 394 and proceed 1/4 mile to Chautauqua Institution Main Gate Entrance. Follow directional signs to Athenaeum Hotel.
  Pittsburgh and South Take I 79 North to I 90 East through Erie. Follow I 90 to Route I 86 -exit 37. Take I 86 to exit 7- 20 miles. Turn left onto Route 33 off of exit and proceed east to Rte 394. Turn right onto Rte 394 and go 1/4 mile to Chautauqua Institution Main Gate Entrance. Follow directional signs to Athenaeum Hotel.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Hotel Check-in, Program Registration, Welcome and Dinner
(Sunday, September 22)
   
 Afternoon: Program check-in and registration is from 3:00-5:00 pm. Pick up your packet including the updated schedule and other key information to help you navigate the program and premises comfortably. Then you're invited to a light hors d' oeuvres reception and wine bar to begin meeting your fellow participants and making new friends.
 Dinner: Dinner begins at 6:00 pm. You'll be able to make selections from a varied buffet including hot and cold dishes, soup, salads and desserts.
 Evening: Following dinner at about 7:00 pm, we'll have a brief session for the program staff to welcome you and begin introductions. The the large group will be divided into small groups for a thorough orientation of the day-to-day schedule. Your group leader will also meet with your group prior to class each morning.

Day 2: Rotating Sessions: Meetings With Great Minds, Afternoon Electives, Evening Activities/Entertainment
(Monday, September 23)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in the hotel dining room from 7:30-8:30am.Selections will include eggs, pancakes or waffles, hot and cold cereals, breakfast meats, and a hot entree as well as coffee, tea, juices and milk ( plus a milk alternative).
 Morning: Morning Classes: Morning class sessions 9:00 am -12:00 noon with a mid-morning break. The "great minds" in this program refers to both the presenters and participants. We're delighted to offer you some of the most stimulating and intriguing speakers we can find and hope you will enliven sessions with your questions following each presentation. Shuttles to and from classes available. Each group will rotate through all presentations throughout the week.  Lunch: Buffet lunch is served in the hotel dining room from 12:15 -1:30 pm. Choose from salads, soup, cold cuts for sandwiches, hot entrees, desserts, and soft drinks and other beverages.
 Afternoon: Afternoon Electives: Afternoon electives are offered from 2:00-3:30 daily. Take part in activites and presentations of your choosing. Typical EXAMPLES: Nature , garden and historic tours, wine tasting, a film screening, David Zinman- David Kozak , political analyst. You may also take this time as free time to play golf or tennis. Electives and personnel subject to change
 Dinner: Buffet dinner is served in the hotel dining room at 6:00 pm. Typical selections include a choice of hot entrees as well as soup, salads, pasta or rice, and of course, desserts and a range of beverages.
 Evening: Evening Activites/ Entertainment: There is evening entertainment beginning each night at 7:30 pm.Examples of evening entertainment are: Jazz Combo, Youth Choral Group, Blue Grass, Classical Duet, Activities/entertainment & personnel subject to change

We're delighted to offer you some of the most stimulating and intriguing speakers we can find and hope you will enliven sessions with your questions following each presentation.
