Less than 70 miles from one another, Santa Fe and Taos are the jewel cities of northern New Mexico; seemingly enchanted places cast against the backdrop of the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Adobe pueblos built by ancestral peoples still stand, elegant Spanish colonial plazas serve as meeting places as they have for four centuries and beautiful museums display the work of artist-pilgrims who gathered here to find inspiration in the land. Examine Santa Fe and Taos through the eyes of those who have called them home and discover not only what they share, but also what sets each apart.

Santa Fe

A cosmopolitan city famous for its world-renowned opera, chamber and choral music and for its art and artists, Santa Fe is situated at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Nearby, eight historic, continuously occupied pueblos and small Hispanic villages divulge a heritage that is impeccably preserved in this multi-cultural state capital.

Ronald Roybal
Ronald Roybal is a professional musician who performs in the New Mexico area. A descendant of Spanish Colonial and Pueblo (Tewa) peoples, he has been nominated for four Native American Music Awards for his flute and Spanish guitar recordings. Ronald has been featured twice on NPR’s “Performance Today” program and has performed live at concert venues such as the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and the Colorado Music Festival. He holds bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and psychology.
 
Mark Utgaard
A resident of New Mexico for more than 40 years, Mark Utgaard enjoys sharing his love for the state’s culture and history with others. He is a former journalist and editor, and for 20 years, owned an importing business that offered traditional and contemporary handcrafts from Colombia for wholesale in North America, Asia and the Caribbean. During the 1960s and 1970s, Mark traveled to Europe several times as a member of youth orchestras, and later worked as a travel manager for other youth choirs and orchestras journeying to Europe. He has been a Road Scholar group leader and instructor for six years. In his free time, Mark likes to make furniture from old wood and he is learning to play the button accordion.
 
Sharon Franco
Sharon Franco holds a master’s in English literature from the University of Illinois, as well as a literary translator's diploma from El Colegio de Mexico in Mexico City. She teaches literature and writing at the University of New Mexico and Santa Fe Preparatory School, public speaking at Santa Fe Community College, and Spanish language and literature privately. She has translated books of fiction to and from Spanish. In Mexico, she was a translator of films, fiction and scholarly publications.
 
Connie Eichstaedt
Connie Eichstaedt, a native New Mexican, built her adobe home by hand more than 25 years ago in Apache Canyon on the southern side of Santa Fe National Forest. A passionate defender of New Mexico’s natural resources, Connie is the executive director of Southwest Seminars, an educational nonprofit that specializes in developing programs in Southwest Studies. She is an enthusiastic and colorful storyteller.
 
Mireya Cirici
Mireya Cirici is a superb painter and photographer with a bachelor’s in art history from the University of Barcelona in Spain and a master’s in cultural history from the University of California, San Diego, and studies in art and painting in La Sorbonne in Paris. A Santa Fe resident since 1995, Mireya has taught painting, art history and art appreciation in universities, museums and as an artist-in-residence. She is preparing a painting exhibit and photographic portrait of Santa Fe.

Driving Directions
  Driving North from Albuquerque Take I-25 north from Albuquerque approximately 56 miles to Santa Fe. Take the St. Francis Drive Exit #282 and go left under the overpass. Merge on St. Francis Drive heading north. Go 5 miles through Santa Fe to the stoplight at Alamo Drive and turn left. Take an immediate right onto Calle Mejia. The LODGE AT SANTA FE is on the top of the hill. If using a GPS device, use the address 744 Calle Mejia, Santa Fe, NM 87501
  Driving South from Taos or Espanola Take US 285 / US 284 South toward Santa Fe. Follow signs to St. Francis Drive and stay to the right. You will pass the hotel on the right as you come down the hill into Santa Fe. Turn right at the light at Alamo Drive. Take an immediate right on Calle Mejia. THE LODGE AT SANTA FE is on the left at the top of the hill. If using a GPS device, use the address 744 Calle Mejia, Santa Fe, NM 87501.

Day 1: Arrive in Santa Fe, Introductions, Orientation
(Sunday, May 19)
   
 Arrive To: You may check into your room at the hotel anytime after 4:00 PM. Registration with group leader in designated area at the hotel between 4:00 and 5:30 PM.
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM
 Evening: Program orientation and introductions in hotel meeting room from 7:00 until 8:30 PM

Day 2: Morning Classes on Southwest Literature/Santa Fe Field Trip
(Monday, May 20)

Note: Walking up to three blocks; some standing at museums and other site visits
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel from 7:00-8:00 AM
 Morning: Enjoy a class on the literature of the Southwest from 8:30-11:15 AM. The southwest literature instructor is very well versed in the authors with whom you should become acquainted. You'll explore examples of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo writings, as well as some from other cultures.
 Lunch: Lunch at the hotel from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM
 Afternoon: The afternoon begins with a class about Santa Fe, "The City Different." The bus then departs for a guided exploration of Santa Fe, including the Plaza, the New Mexico State Capitol building, and other selected sites. You'll drive through a lot of Santa Fe, including the historic downtown area as well as more modern parts of the city.

Part of the exploration will include some walking; the rest will be via bus.

You'll be able to relate some of the information you studied earlier to what you see in the afternoon.

Bus returns to the hotel by 5:00 PM.

 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM
 Evening: FREE EVENING or optional video in hotel meeting room

Day 3: History of New Mexico and Art and Architecture of Northern New Mexico/Santa Clara Pueblo and the Village of Chimayo/Lunch at Rancho de Chimayo
(Tuesday, May 21)

Note: Walking up to three blocks over paved and unpaved terrain; some standing at site visits
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel from 7:00-8:00 AM
 Morning: Enjoy classes from 8:00-10:15 AM on the history, art, and architecture of northern New Mexico. You'll gain an even greater understanding of the history and culture of the area, which will prepare you for the rest of the program week. Knowing the historical perspective will separate you from New Mexico tourists who won't have the background you will gain. Your appreciation for the area and all that makes it special will be enhanced by your new-found knowledge.

Depart at 10:30 for a field trip to Pojoaque, where you'll visit the Poeh Museum, then continue on to the northern New Mexico village of Chimayó.

 Lunch: Lunch at Rancho de Chimayó from 12:30-1:30 PM
 Afternoon: The northern New Mexico village of Chimayó is much as it has been for over 200 years. You'll visit El Santuario de Chimayó, which has been called the "Lourdes of Northern New Mexico," because of the reputed healing powers of the earth found inside. You'll also visit a nearby weaving center.

Chimayo has several families who have been known for their beautiful weaving for many, many years. The Hispanic weavings are different from those of Native American origin, and it's interesting to see all of the things that can be made from the beautiful naturally dyed wool that is used. You'll see traditional rugs, but also beautiful vests and jackets, placemats, handbags, and more.

The bus departs at 3:00 PM for a scenic trip to Santa Clara Pueblo, where you'll visit with Paul Speckled Rock at his pottery studio.

Santa Clara Pueblo is one of the friendliest pueblos of northern New Mexico, welcoming visitors. The pueblo is famous for its blackware and redware pottery. Mr. Speckled Rock and his wife, Rosalda, offer a talk about how the pottery is made at Santa Clara, and they'll talk about the families who are best known for their pottery.

The bus departs at 4:30 PM for return to Santa Fe.

 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel from 6:00-7:00 PM
 Evening: Video, "Georgia O'Keeffe: Portrait of an Artist," in hotel meeting room from 7:30-8:30 PM

Day 4: Literature and Art Classes/O'Keeffe Museum/Free Afternoon/Dinner on your own/Free Evening
(Wednesday, May 22)

Note: Walking up to three blocks over paved and unpaved terrain; some standing at site visits
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel from 7:00 AM until 8:00 AM
 Morning: From 8:30 AM until 10:45 AM, you'll have more classes on southwest literature and the art and architecture of northern New Mexico. You'll then go to downtown Santa Fe for a visit to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The O'Keeffe Museum is not a large museum, but it is a primary destination for many of the people who visit Santa Fe. Ms. O'Keeffe's paintings, as well as those of some other artists, are featured there. Bus departs at 12:15 for lunch destination.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Blue Corn Cafe on Water Street at 12:30
 Afternoon: FREE AFTERNOON - Bus departs from downtown for those who would like to return to the hotel, or you can explore Santa Fe on your own. You can visit the downtown Museums of New Mexico, ride the "Santa Fe Pickup" around the downtown area, or take a public bus to other parts of Santa Fe; just riding on the buses for an hour or two can give you a broader perspective of what the city is all about.
 Dinner: Dinner is on your own tonight. Your group leader can offer suggestions for restaurants near the hotel and in the downtown area. If you've chosen to remain downtown this afternoon and evening, you'll need to arrange your own transportation back to the hotel.

Day 5: Museum Hill Museums/Native American Music Presentation
(Thursday, May 23)

 Morning: Morning classes from 8:00-11:30 AM on the art and architecture of northern New Mexico
 Lunch: Lunch at the hotel from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM
 Afternoon: Afternoon class on the history of New Mexico from 12:30-1:30 PM.

At 1:45 the bus will depart for Museum Hill, where you'll explore the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Museum of International Folk Art. The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture is one of the State of New Mexico museums, and features pottery, jewelry, sculpture, baskets, and other objects made by Native Americans from all over the United States. Most of the work is from the Southwest. It's a beautiful museum on Museum Hill, and we think you'll enjoy going there for a self-guided tour. We don't usually utilize the docents, as most people in groups seem to prefer looking around at their own pace. There is a brochure available that explains all of the exhibits. The bus departs at 4:30 PM to return to the hotel about 5:00 PM.

 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel from 6:00-7:00 PM
 Evening: Special presentation from 7:00-8:00 PM by Ronald Roybal, an award-winning Native American flutist, guitarist, and singer. He'll tell you about his background, his music (he's a composer as well as an historian of Native American music) and his life as a musician.

Day 6: Full-Day Trip to Taos
(Friday, May 24)

 Breakfast: Breakfast at the hotel from 7:00 to 8:00 AM.

Pick up boxed lunches in lobby before departing for Taos.

 Morning: Pick up boxed lunches and be on board bus by 8:15 AM. Bus departs for Taos at 8:15. On arrival in Taos, you'll visit the San Francisco de Asis mission church, the Martinez Hacienda, and the Ernest Blumenschein Home.
 Lunch: Boxed lunch from hotel can be eaten on the bus or on Taos Plaza.
 Afternoon: You'll have a little free time in the Plaza area after lunch. Then, If Taos Pueblo is open (it sometimes closes unexpectedly for tribal meetings, funerals, holy days, etc.), we'll take you there for a visit. We will also take you to the Millicent Rogers Museum and the Rio Grande Gorge.

Bus departs at 4:45 for return to Santa Fe, arriving back at about 6:00 PM.
