Situated midway between Catholic Europe and the Islamic East, the Byzantine Empire offers a unique window into the relationship between Western and Eastern cultures. Explore Byzantine history and the spirituality of the Eastern Orthodox Church with professors who are recognized experts in their fields and sample Greek cuisine, dance, language and culture amid the beauty of northern California.

Midway between Fresno and Sequoia and King’s Canyon National Parks, Dunlap is a quiet crossroads set into the rolling Sierra Foothills among ancient oaks and bold rock formations.

NICHOLAS RANCH: "The Ranch" as the locals call it, is a conference and retreat center located in Dunlap, California, 40 miles east of Fresno in the foothills leading up to Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Park. Rolling hills, ancient oaks, an apple orchard and an olive grove provide gorgeous natural surroundings. Nestled on 230 acres of what was once a working horse ranch, our lodges, meeting spaces, and recreational facilities provide for very comfortable accommodations surrounded by rugged landscape. Both the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are only 30 minutes away from our facility, making it possible to visit both in one day! A breathtaking Byzantine-style monastery over looks our facility. Hiking trails and a swimming pool are also available. All rooms come with a private bath, individual air-conditioning and heating. Driving Directions
  Northern California Take CA.-99 South towards Fresno; take exit 133 to merge onto CA.-180 East toward Airport/ Kings Canyon. Take exit 63 turn right on to Clovis Ave. Turn left at CA. 180/Kings Canyon Highway. After the small(very small) town of Minkler, look for the CA. 180/Kings Canyon turnoff; make a left towards the parks and Squaw Valley. About three miles past Squaw Valley,look for a small convenience store and gas station on your left; half a mile later make a right onto Dunlap rd. in about three miles you will see the St. Nicholas Ranch sign on your left, turn and follow the road; you will make a left into the facilities parking lot. You have gone to far if you reach the chain link fence.
  Southern California Follow I-5 through the Grapevine Pass; take CA-99 NORTH towards BAKERSFIELD/FRESNO; from Hwy 99, take 198 EAST towards Visalia; after eaching Visalia (app. 6 miles), take the exit for Hwy 63 NORTH; continue to folow the signs for HWY 63 (can be a bit trickey) as you wend your way out of Visalia, past Orange Cove, and to Hwy 180 (app. 30 miles); turn RIGHT onto Hwy 180 EAST (Kings Canyon Road); pass through Squaw Valley, look for a small convenience store and gas station on your left; 1/2 mile later make a RIGHT onto DUNLAP RD.; follow Dunlap Rd. 2.5 miles to the Blue "St Nicholas Ranch" sign; make a LEFT at the sign and follow the road all the way around (about 1 mile); make a LEFT into the Parking lot. You have gone to far if you reach the chain link fence.

Day 2: Breakfast/Lecture/Lunch/Greek Cooking Class/Dinner/An Evening with John Muir
(Monday, March 25)
   
 Breakfast: 8am Breakfast. A simple continental breakfast with a choice of Greek Fare.
 Morning: Byzantine History part one. A look at the early history of the Byzantine Empire.
 Lunch: 12pm Lunch. Greek Cuisine
 Afternoon: 2pm. A truly Greek experience work with phyllo and grape leaves. And then sample your art on Thursday evening at the Glendi.
 Dinner: 5:30 pm. A sampling of Greek dishes.
 Evening: 7pm. Frank Helling joins us for an evening as John Muir a glimpse into his life and passions. A truly unique night.

Day 3: Breakfast/Lecture/Lunch/Furs, Flowers, and Feathers of the Sierra Nevada/Dinner/Greek Dancing
(Tuesday, March 26)
   
 Breakfast: 8am. Buffet style breakfast.
 Morning: 9am. Byzantine History continues, the struggle between East and West, between Christianity and Islam. And also the implications for current world events.
 Lunch: 12pm Phyllo & Yogurt, has Greek written all over it.
 Afternoon: Dave McFadden takes us on an adventure, both in the classroom, and on a modest hike around the Ranch.
 Dinner: 5:30pm. Sampling of great Greek food and Fresh Bread.
 Evening: The local dance troupe, Kamari, from St. George Greek Orthodox Church joins us with their instructor George Papangellin. George will have you joining the dance group before the night is over.

Day 4: Breakfast/Free Time/Sack Lunch/Squaw Valley Herb Garden/Dinner/Greek Language, Traditions, and Customs
(Wednesday, March 27)
   
 Breakfast: 8am. Continental sampling.
 Morning: The day is yours! Choose to peruse the many books in the Library, or check out the surrounding area with a hike. For other ideas and local attractions give us a call at 559-338-2103
 Lunch: 9am. A sack lunch will be available for you to pick up after breakfast.
 Afternoon: 2pm. A visit from the Squaw Valley Herb Garden, Rosemary brings her beautiful garden to the ranch.
 Dinner: 5:30pm.
 Evening: 7pm. We will take a light hearted look at the Greek Language, and the traditions and customs of Greece. A great introduction for those of you planning to visit Greece in the future or simply want to better understand your Greek neighbors.

Day 5: Breakfast/Lecture/Lunch/Monastery Tour/Greek Orthodox Evening Vespers/Dinner/A Nights Festivities
(Thursday, March 28)
   
 Breakfast: 8am. Greek and American Fare
 Morning: 9am. A look at Byzantine Art and Architecture
 Lunch: 12pm. Soup and Sandwiches Greek Style
 Afternoon: 4pm. (Optional) You will have the opportunity to attend a Greek Orthodox Evening Vespers service at the convent which last approximately one hour.
 Afternoon: 1pm. One of the most unique features of St. Nicholas Ranch is that it is home to an authentic Greek Orthodox Convent which follows the Orthodox Byzantine tradition. It is an opportunity to experience a living witness of Byzantium. Enjoy the hospitality of the nuns who will provide a tour of the convent followed by Greek coffee and pastries.
 Dinner: 5:30pm. "Glendi Night" A social hour starts the nights festivities, with a Traditional Lamb dinner to follow.
 Evening: 7pm. Talent Show, Movies, Charades, Dancing! An evening of Fun for all.
