Get to know Scotland’s “second city” at Culzean Castle, a 600-acre estate, and Burns Heritage Park and Burns Cottage, home to Scotland’s great national poet. En route to Oban, learn about the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh at his Hill House. Marvel at the magnificent engineering feat of “The Hollow Mountain,” the Cruachan Power Station, and search for wildlife along the shores of Loch Lomond.

A light lunch is served in the hotel at 12:30pm on arrival day. A welcome meeting at 5:30pm preceeds dinner. You will be staying at Copthorne Millennium Hotel Glasgow that night.
  End of Program:
After breakfast on departure day. Breakfast ends at 10:00am and check-out is by 11:00am. You will be staying at King James (formerly Edinburgh Thistle) the night before.

From Glasgow Airport the easiest method is to take the Service 500 (airport's official Glasgow Shuttle) First's Glasgow Shuttle provides you with the most direct service between the airport and Glasgow city centre with links to Glasgow's two main rail stations – Central and Queen Street – and the main bus terminus, Buchanan Bus Station. The service operates up to every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day, and takes only 25 minutes end to end. The nearest rail station to Glasgow Airport is Paisley Gilmour Street, which is just one mile from the terminal and easily reached by taxi or bus (services 66 and 300). There are direct rail services from Paisley Gilmour Street to Glasgow Central (8 trains an hour). Taxis-the approximate fare from Glasgow Airport to Glasgow City Centre is £20.00 - £22.00

Day 3: Glasgow City of Culture.
(Friday, August 30)
   
 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: Lecture in the hotel on "Scotland's History" followed by a panoramic field trip by coach around the highlights of this Scottish city.
 Lunch: Excluded.
 Afternoon: At leisure for you to explore more of this city and perhaps to take in one of the many museums, including the recently opened Museum of Transport or its fine collection of municiple art. Your course director will advise you of your options.
 Dinner: Excluded. There are many restaurants, pubs and cafes close to the hotel.

Day 4: Culzean Castle and Robert Burns National Heritage Park.
(Saturday, August 31)
   
 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: Field trip to Robert Adam's masterpiece Culzean Castle, a 600 acre estate in South Aryshire, where Dwight D Eisenhower was given the use of a flat in recognition of his connection to this grateful nation. The Kennedy family is one of Scotland’s oldest families and trace ancestry to Robert the Bruce. Culzean Castle was their principal seat from 1759, the castle and its landscape reflecting their status and aspirations. Over the centuries, the Kennedys transformed a medieval tower house, built to protect its inhabitants during dangerous times, into one of the grandest country houses in Ayrshire. In the 1770s, the 10th Earl commissioned the famous architect, Robert Adam, to create a house worthy of his political status. The entrance doors are on the site of Adam's front door. Above the doorway you can see Adam’s original graceful fanlight.

 Afternoon: The field trip continues to Burns Cottage in Alloway -the birthplace of Scotland's national poet Robert Burns. At the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, trace his footsteps from birth to national and international icon. Robert Burns Birthplace Museum offers a truly unique encounter with Scotland’s favourite son. Set among 10 acres of the poet’s cherished Alloway countryside, the museum comprises the famous Burns Cottage where the poet was born, the historic landmarks where he set his greatest work, the elegant monument and gardens created in his honour and a modern museum housing the world’s most important collection of his life and works.

Day 5: Mackintosh's Hill House, Loch Lomond, Cruachan Power Station and Loch Awe.
(Sunday, September 1)
   
 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: Transfer by coach to Oban via Helensburgh where we will see the home created for one of Scotland's best known publishers by Glasgow's world famous Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Dating back to 1902, the interiors and decorative scheme were created by Mackintosh and his wife. Continue on with a drive along the shores of Loch Lomond into the Highlands.
 Lunch: Your choice to explore Inverary.
 Afternoon: The field trip continues to "the Hollow Hill" Cruachan Power Station, one of the country's most amazing engineering achievements. Hidden deep within the mountain of Ben Cruachan on the shores of Loch Awe is Cruachan Power Station. A short distance from Oban, you can discover one of the hidden wonders of the Highlands. A power station buried one kilometre below the ground. At its centre lies a massive cavern, high enough to house the Tower of London!

Day 6: The Isle of Mull and Isle of Iona.
(Monday, September 2)
   
 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: Today we take a full day field trip by ferry to the Isle of Mull and then on to the Isle of Iona. Mull is the second largest of the islands of the Inner Hebrides.
 Lunch: Taken out.
 Afternoon: From Mull cross to the "Cradle of Christianity" Iona-a place where they say "the Veil is thin". Iona was a centre of Irish monasticism for four centuries and is today renowned for its tranquility and natural beauty. Return by ferry from Craignure to Oban.
 Dinner: In the hotel.
 Evening: At leisure.

Day 7: Steam train ride from Fort William to Mallaig.
(Tuesday, September 3)
   
 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: Transfer to Fort William today. Take the steam train ride from Fort William to Mallaig and on the way you'll see tiny villages, vast moors, towering mountains and historic glens. Drive by Stalker Castle and through"Kidnapped" country.
 Lunch: Taken out in Mallaig.
 Afternoon: Return to Fort William for 3:30pm. Free afternoon.
 Dinner: In the hotel.
 Evening: At leisure.

Day 8: Ben Nevis Gondola ride, Rannoch Moor and Glencoe.

 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: This morning take a gondoal ride on Ben Nevis and ride the West Highland line from Fort William to Tyndrum via Rannoch Moor. The ride is considered the most scenic railway line in Britain and voted the top rail journey in the world by readers of independent travel magazine Wanderlust in 2009,
 Lunch: Taken out in Tyndrum.
 Afternoon: The field trip continues through Glencoe with a stop at the informative Visitor centre.
 Dinner: In the hotel.
 Evening: At leisure.

Day 9: The misty Isle of Skye, Armadale and Clan MacDonald Centre, Dunvegan Castle.
(Thursday, September 5)
   
 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: Spend a full day on the Isle of Skye-the misty isle. Begin by taking the 30 minute ferry ride from Mallaig to Armadale where the MacDonalds have their clan centre. Explore Armadale Castle Gardens. The Armadale estate covers 20,000 acres (8,000 hectares). It is traditionally owned by the clan Macdonald or Donald, also referred to as the Lords of Isles and now run by a Trust. Visit the Museum with its unique display of MacDonald and Skye artifacts and walk through the serene gardens with plants and trees warmed by the Gulf Stream.
 Lunch: In Dunvegan.
 Afternoon: The field trip continues to Dunvegan Castle and Garden and take some time to seal spot! Return via Skye Bridge. Continue on to Dingwall.
 Dinner: In the hotel.
 Evening: Local pipers perform.

Day 10: Cawdor Castle, the Black Isle.
(Friday, September 6)
   
 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: Driving by Culloden Battlefield, we journey to fairy tale, Cawdor Castle, 14th century home to the Thanes of Cawdor. Linked with Shakespeare's Macbeth, the castle remains home to the Cawdor family today. Although the House has evolved over 600 years, later additions mainly of the 17th century were all built in the Scottish vernacular style with slated roofs over walls and gables of mellow local stone. This style gives Cawdor a strong sense of unity, and the massive, severe exterior belies an intimate interior that gives the place a surprisingly personal, friendly atmosphere. Drive by Culloden.
 Lunch: Taken out.
 Afternoon: The field trip continues to the Black Isle and Cromarty and a special private talk by a custodian at Groam House Museum.
 Dinner: In the hotel.
 Evening: At leisure.

Day 11: Elgin Cathedral, Glenlivet whisky tasting, sheepdog display.
(Saturday, September 7)
   
 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: Transfer to Pitlochry via Elgin Cathedral-burned by the Wolf of Badenoch in the 14th century and continue on to Strathspey, known for its plentiful whisky distilleries. Visit Glenlivet Distillery set in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains in one of the most romantic and scenic glens in the Highlands. See inside the vast bonded warehouse, learn how whisky is made and sample a "wee dram".
 Lunch: Lunch at the distillery.
 Afternoon: This afternoon enjoy a sheepdog display at Kingussie Leaut Farm.
 Dinner: In the hotel.
 Evening: At leisure.

Day 12: St Andrews, Blair Adam private talk with owners.

 Lunch: Excluded.
 Afternoon: A unique experience this afternoon as we take a private field trip to Blair Adam and meet the owners who talk about the challenges of inheriting an historic house. You may notice that your course director's last name is Adam!
 Dinner: In the Edinburgh hotel.
 Evening: At leisure.

Day 13: Culross Castle, Rosslyn Chapel.
(Monday, September 9)
   
 Breakfast: Full Scottish breakfast in the hotel.
 Morning: Enjoy a panoramic field trip by coach around historic Edinburgh, including the Old and New Towns. Continue on to Rosslyn Chapel, a symphony of stone carving and craftmanship associated with the Da Vinci Code.
 Lunch: Taken out.
 Afternoon: Continue on to the 17th century delightful small town of Culross with its Merchants' Palace and Bishops' Study. Enjoy the storied narrow streets and views across the Firth of Forth. Return to Edinburgh via Dunfirmline, birthplace of Andrew Carnegie and burial place of Robert the Bruce's body (minus heart and entrails!)
