Dynamic field trips take you to explore three fateful sites. In Harpers Ferry, WV, recall John Brown’s 1859 anti-slavery raid — when Robert E. Lee led Federal forces! The Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, MD, led to President Lincoln’s issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. In Gettysburg, PA, trace the chronology of America’s most devastating battle, July 1-3, 1863.
Highlights
• Explore the site of John Brown's Fort at Harpers Ferry National History Park and climb the rock where Thomas Jefferson proclaimed Harpers Ferry to be "one of the most stupendous scenes in nature." • Try to imagine the battle on a field trip to Antietam, where 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured or missing after 12 hours of combat on Sept. 17, 1862. • Experience lively evenings viewing the movie “Gettysburg,” hearing authentic Civil War era music played on a handmade dulcimer by a renowned folk musician, and “meeting” Mary Todd Lincoln’s close friend, Hannah Shearer
