There are stars of Broadway and stars of Hollywood, but rarely do they coincide. Join us to examine the careers and memorable successes of the immortals of the entertainment world: the composer-lyricist team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, and a performer who can truly be called inimitable — dancer-choreographer-actor-singer Fred Astaire. Experts lead you through their professional lives from hits to failures and their passage from stage to screen.

Lancaster

Known worldwide as “Pennsylvania Dutch Country,” Lancaster and the surrounding countryside is home to the nation’s oldest Amish community. One of the longest-running farmer’s markets in the country attracts those seeking fresh produce and baked goods.



Accommodations
Modern retreat center in peaceful woodland setting; Buffet-style meals highlight local specialties and flavors. In observance of the guidelines of this institution, there is a request that only married couples or people of the same sex share rooms.

Bill Messenger

Bill Messenger is a musician whose Road Scholar programs are a mix of popular music history and song, combining whimsical tales with catchy tunes that tickle the ivories and the funny bone. In his musical career Bill has played backup piano for Mama Cass Elliot, studied musical composition at the Peabody Conservatory under Louis Cheslock and been voted “Baltimore’s Best Pianist” by the readers of Baltimore Magazine. Critic Robert Lippman called him “a cross between Max Morath and Victor Borge.”
 
Julie Kurzava

Julie Kurzava is a professional actor, singer and voice teacher. She has appeared in feature and independent films, on stage in theatrical and operatic performances throughout the Mid-Atlantic states, and in commercials and voiceover work. Julie is a classically trained singer who studied at Northwestern University and the Peabody Conservatory. She is a founder of New Moon Theater, a theater and opera company that tours schools, libraries and other venues in the Mid-Atlantic.

Registration in Maranatha Retreat Center lobby from 4PM - 5:30PM. You will be staying at Black Rock Retreat that night.

Room checkout at 10AM. Program ends at 11:30AM with lunch served at 11:45AM. You will be staying at Black Rock Retreat the night before.

Driving Directions
  From Baltimore via I-95 and US Route 1 Exit I-95 in Maryland at Route 272 (Exit 100). Travel north on Route 272, until the intersection of US Route 1. Travel north on US Route 1. Get off at Route 472 (Oxford, PA exit). Turn left onto Route 472 and travel north approximately 8.5 miles. Black Rock Retreat is located on the right side of the road approximately 2 miles after the small town of Kirkwood, PA.
  From Harrisburg via the PA Turnpike East Exit the turnpike at exit #247 (Harrisburg). From toll booth take right hand ramp. Take Route 283 east to Lancaster, PA. Exit Route 283 at Route 72 (Manheim Pike). Travel on Route 72 south until it merges with Route 222 south (Prince Street). Travel on Route 222 through the town of Lancaster and continue on Route 222 south all the way to the town of Quarryville. (Watch the left turn that Route 222 south makes after the Willow Valley Resort, south of Lancaster). When in Quarryville, make a left at the first light (there will be a Ford dealership on your right) onto Route 372 east (State Street) and travel approximately 0.7 miles. Turn right onto Route 472 south. Travel approximately 4.5 miles, and Black Rock Retreat will be on your left. (Do not try to find us on Black Rock Road. We do not have an entrance on this road).
  From Philadelphia via I-95 and US Route 11 Exit I-95 in Pennsylvania after Chester, PA at Route 322 West. Travel north until you reach the intersection of US Route 1. Travel south on US Route 1 until you reach the exit for Route 472 (Oxford exit). Turn right onto Route 472 and travel north approximately 8.5 miles. Black Rock Retreat is located on the right side of the road approximately 2 miles after the small town of Kirkwood, PA.
  From Philadelphia via the PA Turnpike West Exit the turnpike at exit #326 (Valley Forge/King of Prussia). Almost immediately get on Route 202 south. Travel on this road until you reach US Route 1 south. Travel approximately 26 miles on Route 1 south until you reach the exit for Route 472. Turn right onto Route 472 and travel north approximately 8.5 miles. Black Rock Retreat is located on the right side of the road approximately 2 miles after the small town of Kirkwood, PA.
  From Wilmington, Delaware Take Route 141 or Route 48 to Route 41 North. Continue on Route 41 North until it intersects with Route 1. Take Route 1 South and get off at the fifth exit (Route 472). Turn right and go north on Route 472 for approximately 8.5 miles. Black Rock Retreat is located on the right side of the road approximately 2 miles after the small town of Kirkwood.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Check in and registration/Orientation
(Sunday, November 10)
   
 Afternoon: RETREAT CENTER CHECK-IN AND PROGRAM REGISTRATION: As you enter Black Rock Retreat's Maranatha Retreat Center come on over to the Road Scholar table located in the center of the spacious lobby. Registration will take place from 4PM-5:30PM. You will receive your room assignment and all needed information for the program at that time.
 Dinner: Dinner is a buffet-style meal served in the Maranatha Retreat Center Dining Room. Our guests will meet in the lobby for instructions. Our goal is to serve our guests healthy and delicious food featuring local tastes and recipes.
 Evening: ORIENTATION/GETTING TO KNOW YOU: Beginning at 7:15PM in our private meeting room we'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety, guidelines, emergency procedures, and any other administrative issues. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes we will notify you as quickly as possible via the SPI. We appreciate your understanding. We will also spend some time becoming better acquainted with participants and program staff. Find out what you have in common beyond a love of learning! The session will be followed by an ice cream sundae bar set up in the retreat center dining room with plenty of time to relax and prepare for the full day of learning ahead.

Day 2: Rogers and Hammerstein lectures led by Peabody professor Julie Kurzava.
(Monday, November 11)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Morning: Rogers and Hammerstein lecture: Step back into the 40's and 50's and learn why this collaboration between 2 mature, seasoned professionals reflected the sensibilities of an era. Guests will also have the opportunity to take a tractor and wagon around the 100 acres of beautiful Black Rock Retreat.
 Lunch: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Afternoon: Singer/actor Julie Kurzava gives a performer's perspective on the works of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.
 Dinner: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Evening: Showing of Rogers and Hammerstein film complete with freshly made popcorn and soda.

Day 3: Fred Astaire lectures by Bill Messenger featuring film clips and behind the scenes stories.

 Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Morning: Bill Messenger delights with many stories and samplings of the entertainer Fred Astaire.
 Lunch: Buffet-style meal served in dining room.
 Afternoon: Fred Astaire lecture by popular Road Scholar speaker Bill Messenger followed by PBS film presentation of Amish: People of Preservation.
 Dinner: Buffet-style meal served in dining room.
 Evening: Showing of Fred Astaire film followed by an ice cream sundae bar.

Day 4: Fred Astaire lecture by Bill Messenger

 Lunch: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
