Laguna Beach’s Pageant of the Masters is an extraordinary whimsical adventure — real people recreating famous works of art by posing in an outdoor amphitheater with a live orchestra, original score, live narration, intricate sets and sophisticated lighting. This visual feast and its preparatory lectures are the culmination of a program that traces Southern California's multi-cultural history through the creativity of its many peoples.


• Watch as live actors and intricate sets are magically transformed into recreations of magnificent works of art in the Pageant of the Masters.
• Gain insight into the history of the pageant and the artists whose masterpieces capture and enhance the pageant's theme, which changes each year.
• Trace Southern California's multi-cultural history with visits to Bowers Museum, San Juan Capistrano Mission, Irvine Museum and Laguna Beach.

Irvine is a planned city in Orange County, a region known for its beautiful beaches, Disneyland theme park and proximity to Los Angeles and San Diego. The county is home to Fortune 500 companies, the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Mission San Juan Capistrano, famously visited each year for centuries by the migrating cliff swallow.

Donna Granata

Donna Granata is a painter-turned-photographer whose award-winning works have been displayed throughout California and in shows in New York, Chicago and Las Vegas. She founded “Focus on the Masters,” a project that documents contemporary artists and informs the public through exhibitions, lecture series, video biographies and educational outreach. Her FOTM portraits are housed in institutions including the Smithsonian’s Archive of American Artists and the George Eastman House in Rochester, N.Y.
Paul Spitzzeri

A California historian and author of numerous works on such topics as railroad development and regulation, overland emigration, and criminal justice, Paul R. Spitzzeri received his bachelor’s and master’s in history from California State University, Fullerton. He is Assistant Director of the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum near Los Angeles and won the 2009 Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History for his biography of the Workman and Temple families.

Road Scholar registration on Sunday is located in the hotel lobby from 3:30PM-5:00PM. Orientation begins at 5:30PM followed by dinner at 6:00PM and introductions at 7:15PM. You will be staying at Wyndham Irvine - Orange County Airport that night.

Day 1: Independent Arrivals/ Program Orientation
(Sunday, August 18)
 Afternoon: HOTEL CHECK-IN: Check into Wyndham Irvine Orange County Airport after 3:00PM

PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet which we'll review during our orientation session before dinner.

ORIENTATION: We'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, any other administrative issues, and answer your questions. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes, we will notify you as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding.

Menus are contracted for the program and are designed to offer balanced, healthy meals for the participants. In addition to the regular Road Scholar meal plan, this program offers a vegetarian meal option. Unfortunately, there are no other special meal options. Participants with special dietary needs should be prepared to avoid certain foods or supplement the regular meal plan as needed.

Day 2: Field trip to Laguna Beach
(Monday, August 19)

Note: Be prepared to ride hotel shuttle buses to/from Laguna Beach and public bus in Laguna Beach. Walk 8 blocks in downtown Laguna Beach with local artist/guide

The instructor traces the history of Orange County from its ranching and farming roots into the sprawling, urban society of today.

FIELD TRIP: Laguna Beach

The group will ride shuttle buses while in Laguna Beach for the day and have an opportunity to meet and talk with local artists and observe them in their intimate spaces.

 Evening: EXCURSION: Noguchi Garden/California Scenario

California Scenario was designed in 1980 by Isamu Noguchi, a renowned Japanese American sculptor and landscape architect. Also known as Noguchi Gardens, it is one of the most important outdoor sculpture gardens in the country. The engaging garden retreat occupies more than 1-1/2 acres and combines stone, sculpture, water, metal, earth and vegetation in a remarkable interpretation of our Southern California environment.

Day 3: Field Trip to San Juan Capistrano Mission & Bowers Museum of Cultural Art
(Tuesday, August 20)

Note: Be prepared to stand and walk for up to 90 minutes on guided walks at Mission and Bowers Museum; some uneven terrain at Mission

 Morning: FIELD TRIP: San Juan Capistrano and Guided walk of Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano, the Birthplace of Orange County, was founded more than two hundred years ago. Today it is a monument to California's multi-cultural history, embracing its Native American, Spanish, Mexican and European heritage.

 Lunch: Lunch at Sarducci’s Capistrano Depot in San Juan Capistrano's historic train depot built in 1894.

The Los Rios District lies directly across the railroad tracks and is the oldest neighborhood in California. The forty homes that remain here include three original adobe structures. The Montanez, the Rios, and the Silvas are all that remain of the adobes that housed the builders of the mission and the mission ranch workers in the late 1700's and early 1800's.

 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Bowers Museum of Cultural Art

Enjoy a guided walk of the special exhibit, "Tsar's Cabinet: 200 Years of Decorative Arts Under the Romanovs", as well as one of the Museum's permanent exhibits, "The First Californians", which features Native American art and artifacts.

Following the docent tour, participants may explore the museum's other permanent exhibits such as California Legacies: Missions and Ranchos Gallery (1768-1848); Classic California: Recently Conserved Paintings from the Permanent Collection; Pre-Columbian Exhibits, featuring Arts from the sophisticated Pre-Columbian cultures of Mexico and Central America and Ancient Arts of China: A 5,000 Year Legacy.

We will arrive at the Bowers Museum around 1:30PM and participate in the guided tour from 1:45 to 3:00PM. We will depart the Museum at 4:00PM, leaving an hour to view other exhibits. Please make your plans accordingly.

Participants may also be interested in viewing the "Gems of the Medici," a specially ticketed exhibition, on their own. Tickets are priced at Seniors $13 p/p; Adults $15 p/p and may be ordered online in advance. The instructor will present a history of the Pageant of the Masters, with a behind-the-scenes-view of how the illusions are produced that highlights past objects featured in former pageants.

Day 4: Field trip to Irvine Museum, Pageant of the Masters and Festival of Arts
(Wednesday, August 21)

Note: Be prepared to stand and walk for up to an hour on guided walks at Irvine Museum and Festival of Arts exhibition. Climb stairs to seats in amphitheater for Pageant of the Masters performance.

FIELD TRIP: Irvine Museum

The Irvine Museum is the only museum in California dedicated to the preservation and display of California Impressionism or Plein-Air paintings, an art style that flourished in California from 1890 to 1930.

Take a docent-led tour of the Festival of Arts, a juried art show representing a complete spectrum of art media. You will also receive a private visit to the Irvine Bowl for a historical overview of the Pageant.

 Dinner: Dinner on your own at the Festival of Arts/Pageant of the Masters

There are two restaurants on the grounds—the Tivoli Terrace Restaurant, a full-service, garden dining experience with live music, overlooking the art exhibit, and Gina’s “Alfresco”, offering a diversified menu with items such as Pizzetta which are freshly baked, 6” individual pizzas; various salads; grilled Italian-style sandwiches; and subs. Tivoli Too, located on the Art-A-Fair Festival grounds (free admission with Festival of Arts ticket) at 777 Laguna Canyon Rd., offers gourmet dinners in a pleasant outdoor dining area. If making dinner reservations, please be aware that we are scheduled for a 4:00PM docent walk of the Festival of Arts and a 30-45 min presentation in the Irvine Bowl starting at 5:30PM. The Pageant begins promptly at 8:30 PM nightly.

 Evening: PERFORMANCE: Pageant of the Masters 'The Big Picture'

The Pageant of the Masters is the most incredible artistic event in Southern California. Every summer, since 1932, audiences have packed the outdoor amphitheater to witness the “living pictures” spectacle. Watch as artists magically transform live actors and intricate sets into remarkable re-creations of magnificent works of art. The 90 minute program is accompanied by a full orchestra, original score and live narration.
