During 31 years at sea and 1,001 transatlantic crossings, this ship transported the rich and famous across the North Atlantic and now this is your chance to experience an era of opulence as you stay aboard one of the original luxury ocean liners. Relive the ship's history from construction and launch to passenger service and troopship through ship’s officer talks and expert-led walk. Get acquainted with Catalina Island and its seaside village of Avalon.

Long Beach (California)

This busy port city is in the sunny heart of Southern California. The Long Beach Aquarium and Queen Mary cruise ship — docked in Long Beach since 1967 — are highlights.



Avalon

Named for the mystical island of Arthurian legend, Avalon is the only incorporated city on California’s Santa Catalina Island. Though the island has been inhabited for millennia, the current resort community was largely developed by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr., who built the Art Deco-style Catalina Casino among other attractions.

Chuck Liddell
Chuck Liddell is known as the Catalina Island Man, a one-of-a-kind local expert who loves sharing the stories of the island where he was born with visitors. His grandfather helped build chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr.’s mansion and his father supervised construction of the Casino. Chuck has worked at the Catalina Museum and organized the Catalina Island Film Festival. He now owns and operates Liddell Productions and teaches people about the glamorous history of Catalina Island and Avalon.
 
Will Kayne
Will Kayne is the ship historian and the exhibits coordinator for the RMS Queen Mary, one of history’s most famous ocean liners, now retired in Long Beach, Calif. as a museum. Having done extensive research into the Queen Mary’s archives, he now creates all its educational programs. Will honed his writing and presentation skills in the world of theater. He holds a degree in theatre performance from Northern Illinois University and his acting credits include “Dallas” and “Days of Our Lives."
 
Simon Kenrick
Simon Kenrick has worn many hats throughout his career. A former city planner, he has also worked as a graphic designer, political journalist, neighborhood artist and kindergarten teacher. He taught art history at universities and art schools in California, England and Morocco. Today, Simon teaches at CSU Long Beach and Antioch University in Los Angeles, and is a 15-year veteran of Road Scholar learning adventures. He was trained in European and North American art of the 18th through 20th centuries, and specializes in relations between Islamic cultures and the West. Simon received his B.A. in art history from Cambridge University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from UCLA. He also has a graduate diploma in city planning from the Architectural Association in London.

  Description: The Hotel St. Lauren on Catalina Island features 42 luxurious guest rooms overlooking glistening Avalon Bay. All its rooms are decorated in Victorian-style elegance with rosewood furniture. The hotel is just a few blocks away from swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, fishing and kayaking. Guests may rent a boat and explore Avalon bay or rent a rod and reel for ocean fishing right off the Green Pier.

  Room amenities: All guest rooms feature a Victorian decor and are equipped with air conditioning and heat; telephones and alarm clocks; hair dryers and irons/ironing boards; color televisions with all the standard cable channels; and private bathrooms. All of the standard room configurations have a full tub/shower bath while the premium guest rooms have large oval whirlpool tubs. Travel Details
  Start of Program:
Program registration is in the Queen Mary lobby on 'A' Deck from 3:30-5:00PM. Orientation begins at 5:30PM followed by dinner at 6:00PM. Self introductions are after dinner. You will be staying at The Queen Mary Hotel that night.
  End of Program:
The program ends when the Catalina Express boat returns to Long Beach. Group leaves Avalon/Catalina Island at 8AM; boat returns to Long Beach by 9:15AM. Transportation is provided back to the QM. You will be staying at Hotel St. Lauren the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. On the enclosed Participant Information Form, please indicate to us the name of your roommate/traveling companion. Also let us know if you are traveling with other individuals and wish to be assigned a room near them. Photo ID

For 2013, self parking is $10.00 per car, per day. Shipside valet parking is available at an additional $4.00 per car, per day.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Independent Arrivals
(Sunday, March 17)

Note: Our program involves daily walking of distances up to 1-1/2 miles on guided walks and to/from the scheduled activities; climbing stairs; carrying luggage to/from the Queen Mary/bus/Catalina Express boat; and walking to meals outside the hotel properties.



   
 Afternoon: HOTEL CHECK-IN: Check into Queen Mary after 3:00pm.

PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your cabin assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet which we'll review during our orientation session before dinner.

ORIENTATION: Begins before dinner. We'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, any other administrative issues, and answer your questions. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes, we will notify you as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding.

 Dinner: Dinner on Queen Mary

Menus are contracted for the program and are designed to offer balanced, healthy meals for the participants.

 Evening: CROSSING POINTS: Participants introduce themselves to the rest of the group.

Enjoy the remainder of the evening getting to know your fellow participants and discovering what you share beyond a love of lifelong learning.

Day 2: Slide Presentation by Ship's Officer/Introductory Lectures
(Monday, March 18)

Note: The Queen Mary has an overall length of 1,019.5 feet and over six decks to explore.

Learn about the Queen Mary with a 45 minute slide show narrated by one of the ship's officers.

CLASS: Film and Music of the RMS Queen Mary Era

Discuss film and music from 1935 to 1967, the era when the RMS Queen Mary served as an active passenger liner as well as the Great Depression, World War II and Post-War period.

 Afternoon: CLASS: Port of Long Beach

The Port of Long Beach, a fascinating and fast-changing international seaport, is eager to share its story with the local community. The presentation will cover a general overview of the Port and its operations, the Green Port Policy and the Port's environmental programs, local and regional economic benefits, Port security, infrastructure and transportation issues.

After class, the group leader will guide the group to The Queen Mary History exhibit inside The Queen Mary Story space. Use this time to also explore the Engine Room on your own.

 Evening: CLASS: Disasters, Losses and Losers, Shipwrecks Famous and Obscure

Not every voyage goes well - history has given us many exciting sea stories and inspired hundreds of books, songs and movies. Come hear the fates of both famous disasters as well as the more obscure events that brought personal heartbreak without the headlines. See ships as they were and, some, as they are today thanks to the methods of marine archeology. Don't worry, its quite safe to attend!

Day 3: Royal Historic Guided Walk/Art Deco Walk/Aquarium of the Pacific
(Tuesday, March 19)

Note: Our guided walk of the Queen Mary is 90 minutes and the Art Deco walk is 60 minutes. The amount of walking at the Aquarium is determined by your interest level.

 Morning: FIELD TRIP: Royal Historic Guided Walk

On this narrated, guided walk of the ship, learn about her fascinating history while visiting areas not accessible to the general public.

CLASS AND FIELD TRIP: The Art of the Queen Mary and a Look at Art Deco

The Art Deco Talk and Walk of the Queen Mary covers the history of the ship as one of the greatest luxury liners ever built. She has one of the largest collections of original Art Deco artwork and architecture in the world. Learn what the basic style of Art Deco is and see original objects d'art created for the ship during the 1930's, which was the original Art Deco Period.

The World War II Lecture tells the facts and figures of the The Grey Ghost during the Second World War. Having transported over 800,000 troops, serving as a hospital ship as well as the Bride and Baby Shuttle, her performance during the war has truly earned the Queen Mary the reputation of being "an International Historic Treasure".

 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific

More than 12,000 marine animals representing over 550 species can be found at this famous aquarium. Explore a diversity of marine habitats from California coastal waters to the icy Northern Pacific.

Day 4: Catalina Express Boat to Avalon/Catalina Casino Guided Walk
(Wednesday, March 20)

Note: Upon arrival in Avalon, the group walks 0.6 mile from the boat dock to the Casino for a 30-45 minute Casino Guided Walk. The Hotel St. Lauren is a 3-block (0.2 mile) walk up a slight hill (38' elevation change) from downtown Avalon.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast on Queen Mary
 Morning: Check out of the Queen Mary and take the bus to the Catalina Express Landing for the boat trip to Avalon.
 Lunch: Lunch on your own at the restaurant of your choice in Avalon
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Guided Walk of Catalina Casino.

Take a trip down memory lane to the days when bands were big and movies were just beginning to talk. Visit the Avalon Theater with its extraordinary Art Deco murals and classic 1929 theater pipe organ. Continue up to the beautiful, world-famous Casino Ballroom and enjoy the scenic view of Avalon Bay from the outdoor balcony.

Day 5: Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Garden/Narrated Bus Ride of Avalon
(Thursday, March 21)

 Morning: FIELD TRIP: Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Garden

Enjoy a self-guided nature walk in the Wrigley Memorial & Botanical Garden, which houses some of the most beautiful plants in California. The short walk up to the Memorial is well worth the commanding views of Avalon Bay. The Wrigley Memorial honors the memory of William Wrigley Jr, who lived from 1861 to 1932. It is the centerpiece of the Botanical Garden and was built in 1933-34 with the goal of using as many Catalina materials as possible.

FIELD TRIP: Bus Trip Around Avalon

You will discover the enchantment of Avalon everywhere you turn on this delightful 7-1/2 mile journey along the beachfront, up the hillsides, and through the heart of town. It's the perfect introduction to the town of Avalon. See postcard-perfect views and colorful, local spots as our guide provides interesting Catalina Island highlights and history.

 Afternoon: Free afternoon to explore Avalon and Catalina Island on your own or participate in commercial tours at your own expense.

Day 6: Catalina Express Boat to Long Beach/Independent Departures
(Friday, March 22)

Note: The group walks 0.6 mile from the hotel to the boat dock for return trip to Long Beach

 Morning: HOTEL CHECK OUT: Check out of the Hotel St. Lauren and take the Catalina Express boat back to Long Beach.

The return time to Long Beach is determined by the Catalina Express schedule, which changes on a quarterly basis. The group is generally booked on the 8AM boat from Avalon with a return time to Long Beach about 9:15AM. Transportation is provided to take the group back to the Queen Mary.
