PROGRAM REGISTRATION: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and pick up your arrival packet which we'll review during our orientation session before dinner.

CLASS: Air Force One – The Final Mission

The authors of "Air Force One-The Final Mission" tell the story of Air Force One's final trip to the Reagan Library---from decommissioning the aircraft by the US Air Force, to the transport and delivery of the plane to the library's hilltop location, to the opening of the Air Force One Pavilion on October 24, 2005.

The trip features a 2-hour guided docent walk of the new state-of-the art Museum Galleries and Air Force One Pavilion; private access to the Presidential Gift Collection which is not on display in Museum; and a private archivist talk.

Since the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum’s opened in 1991, so much more has been uncovered about President Reagan’s life and works utilizing research and the President’s handwritten diaries. As a result, the Library embarked on a year long renovation project that was completed in February 2011, in time for Reagan’s 100th birthday. The interactive exhibits and never-before-seen artifacts will deliver a more in-depth retelling of the Reagan-era history.

Perched on a mountaintop with sweeping views of mountains, valleys and the Pacific Ocean, this 100-acre site offers memorable experiences for people of all ages. Visitors will be given the opportunity to role-play as they step into a WHO radio booth and read the ticker tape a young Ronald Reagan once read, to raise their hand and take the oath of office on inauguration day, and to deliver some of President Reagan’s famous speeches as they stand behind a presidential podium. Guests will also be able to board the Air Force One plane that served as the 'Flying White House' for President Reagan and six other U.S. presidents from 1973-2001.

View an episode from the PBS series "California's Gold" on Rancho del Cielo (Sky's or Heaven's Ranch), the 688-acre ranch located on the top of the Santa Ynez Mountain range that served as the Western White House for the late President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan. The property was sold to the Young America's Foundation, a conservative group which preserves it today as what it calls "a living monument to Reagan's ideas, values, and lasting accomplishments." Although the ranch is closed to the public, Young America's Foundation offers students and supporters the opportunity to visit the property Reagan called "heaven."

A former Reagan staff member tells of her adventures traveling in advance of the President and his entourage. You'll learn what goes on behind the scenes in this anecdote-filled presentation, from deciding where the plane lands to whom the President will meet and how the press will be accommodated.
