From Slave Narratives to Jazz: An American Literary Journey

Enjoy the rich artistic heritage from secret oral narratives and songs to novels, poems, and film in the African American experience in our country. Works of Frederick Douglass, Phillis Wheatley, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Poitier, among others, will enliven our journey.



Intrigue and Change in the US Supreme Court

Isolated in closed chambers, nine unelected Justices comprise the branch of our government most shrouded in mystery, misunderstanding and myth. See how the Court operates, as law, politics, and personalities collide within this inner sanctum.



Religion and the Civil Rights Movement

Look at the role religion played in the United States civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s. We will consider well-known and not-so-well-known leaders, some who used religion to support the movement and some who used religion to oppose it.

DeLand is within easy reach of Disney World, the Daytona International Speedway, Sea World and Universal Studios. The town itself, known as the “Athens of Florida,” is surrounded by spring-fed lakes and acres of orange groves. The nearby Blue Spring State Park is home to manatees.

Driving Directions
  To DeLand From Orlando/Tampa (Interstate 4, eastbound) -- Take the first DeLand exit (Exit 114) and turn left on State Road 472. Travel approximately three miles and veer right onto Highway 17/92, which later becomes Woodland Boulevard. Travel through downtown DeLand (5 miles) and you'll see the university's main gates at East Minnesota Avenue. From Jacksonville (Interstate 95, southbound) -- Take the International Speedway Boulevard (U.S. 92) exit (Exit 261B) and head west approximately 20 miles into DeLand. Turn left at 17/92 (Woodland Boulevard). Travel south through two traffic lights before entering the Stetson campus area at the main gates at East Minnesota Avenue. From Miami (Interstate 95, northbound) -- Take Exit 249 and head west on State Road 44 approximately 20 miles into DeLand. S.R. 44 will become New York Avenue as you approach DeLand. Turn right on Amelia Avenue and the Stetson campus area will begin after the traffic light. Turn left onto East Michigan Avenue and right at Woodland Boulevard. The main gates will be at East Minnesota Avenue. From Ocala (I-75) -- Take Exit 358 and head east on State Road 326. Travel approximately 15 miles and turn left on State Road 40. Travel approximately 45 miles and turn right on U.S. Highway 17. Travel about 15 miles into DeLand. U.S. 17 will become Woodland Boulevard as you approach the university. You'll arrive at the Stetson campus area when you see the brick entry at East Minnesota Avenue.
Equipment Requirements: There is no equiment needed for this program other than your lively spirt, thirst for knowledge, good attitude, and desire to have a good time and meet some great people.

Day 1: Registration, ice breaker, meeting new people, and getting ready for a week of wonderful programs and activities!
(Sunday, February 24)
   
 Afternoon: Welcome to Stetson University... Home of the "Hatters" Check in at hotel is at 3:00 p.m. Road Scholar Registration - 4:00 p.m. (Check with the front desk of the hotel for location. They will have a Sunday schedule.) You will begin with receiving your name badge, participant lists and enjoy an ice breaker to get things started. The DeLand campus, just 25 miles from Daytona Beach and 35 miles from Orlando, is home to the College of Arts & Sciences, School of Business Administration, School of Music, and many others. The College of Law is located in St. Petersburg/Gulfport, the Tampa Law Center is in downtown Tampa and the Stetson University Center at Celebration is in the Orlando area. Stetson University was founded in 1883. Our 175-acre DeLand campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and our turn-of-the-century buildings have been modernized and updated without losing their charm.  Dinner: We will have a catered meal where the professors for the week are invited to stop in and have dinner with you and say a few words. It's a time to mingle and get to know everyone that you will be with for the following week This is a catered event... (if you have any dietary needs, please let us know on your health forms.)
 Evening: Orientation will be held at approximately 7:00 pm. We will go over the contents of the program folder and schedule for the week. The Professors (if they are available) will speak for a few minutes and get everyone affiliated with the week's programs. The rest of the evening is yours to get settled, relax, and get you ready for a week of wonderful programming.

(Monday, February 25)
   
 Breakfast: Have breakfast in the University dining commons with members of the Stetson student community.
 Morning: On our campus we offer 2 programs in the morning of different academic nature. Please check your schedule for the classes you will be enjoying this morning. Remember to bring a sweater as the classrooms are normally chilly.
 Lunch: Dining commons. Stetson has implemented a food nutrition analysis program offering more low-fat as well as vegetarian options. To learn more about Stetson’s approach to balanced nutrition, see the information found at www.balancemindbodysoul.com/.
 Afternoon: On our DeLand campus we normally offer another educational program in the afternoon (this varies depending on the professors/instructors we have scheduled for the week). Please check your schedule for the classes you will be enjoying this afternoon.
 Dinner: Dinner will be held in the Stetson University cafeteria dining commons. With several different stations, you can choose from a variety of entrées and side dishes.
 Evening: Depending on the schedule for the week there is usually extracurricular activities in the evening which normally includes a University lecture or entertainment by local performers.  Lunch: You will have a catered closing lunch and graduation.
 Afternoon: Independent departures after our closing lunch. Have a really safe trip home and come back and see us for some of our other great programs real soon!
