Play the historic Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort — host site of the 1938 PGA Championship in which Paul Runyan defeated Sam Snead in the final. Graced with magnificent trees, picturesque mountains and a beautiful river, this course was A. W. Tillinghast’s original design, completed in 1911. The PGA Professionals at Shawnee’s Tillinghast Golf Academy introduce you to the great game of golf and the basics of play including history, etiquette and rules.

Shawnee on Delaware

This quaint, historic village is situated amid the sylvan beauty of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area at the foothills of the Pocono Mountains in eastern Pennsylvania, just 75 miles from New York City.
Accommodations
The Historic Shawnee Inn overlooks the National Scenic and Recreational Delaware River; amenities include indoor pool, hot tub, and full service spa.

Cindy Miano
Cindy Miano retired in 2004 from a career in elementary education where she taught fourth grade and served as a language Arts chairperson. In addition to managing Shawnee Institute Road Scholar programs, Cindy is a personal trainer and life coach. She practices Pilates, yoga and various strength training programs, and helps to promote wellness plans for individuals while helping them to achieve overall good health.
 
Joe Manley
Joe Manley is the head golf professional at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in Pennsylvania. He came to Shawnee as the assistant head professional in 2003 and became head pro in 2005. Joe graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a B.S. in Recreation and Leisure Services Management. He enjoy instructing golfers on Road Scholar programs and also teaches many junior camps in addition to overseeing all golf programs at Shawnee.
 
Nick Lussier
Nick Lussier is a PGA apprentice instructor at The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort. He holds a degree in golf management from the Professional Golfers Career College in Orlando, Fla., where he received extensive tutoring from some of the finest golf instructors in the country, preparing him well to be a part of the Shawnee instructor team.
 
Brian Bergstol
Brian Bergstol is the touring golf professional for The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort and a PGA apprentice. He is a graduate of Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., where he was the number one golfer for the Moravian Hounds all four years. Only months after becoming a certified professional golfer, Brian qualified for and played in the 2008 U.S. Open in Torrey Pines, Calif. Between tournaments he shares his experience and knowledge of the game with other players who want to improve.

Driving Directions
  From the East: I-80 West Take PA Exit 310, Delaware Water Gap (immediately after toll bridge, first exit in PA). Then take the next right exit to the PA Welcome Center. At the TRAFFIC LIGHT, proceed straight through on River Road. Go under overpass and over railroad tracks. At stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road for approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  From the North: I-84 West Take Exit 46, Milford. Turn left toward Milford at the stop. At the traffic light in Milford, go straight through and on to US Route 209 S. Follow 209 South for about 25 miles. Just past the traffic light at the elementary school, make a LEFT turn on Hollow Road. Go 4.0 miles (pass Shawnee Mountain) until Hollow Road intersects with River Road at the Shawnee Playhouse. Turn RIGHT onto River Road. The entrance to Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is 1/4 mile on your LEFT.
  From the South: I-95 North I-95 N TO I-476 N. (I-76 N, then I-476 N if coming from Philadelphia Airport). On I-476 N go to US-22 E, to US-33 N, then I-80 E to PA Exit 310, Delaware Water Gap. Turn LEFT at the TRAFFIC LIGHT on River Road. Go under the overpass, and over the railroad tracks. At the stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort will be on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  From the West: I-80 East Take I-80 E to exit 310, Delaware Water Gap. Make a LEFT at the TRAFFIC LIGHT on River Road. Go under overpass and over railroad tracks. At stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road for approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  Note for all: Once you are at the entrance to the Resort, pass the gate house and continue straight over the bridge. The main parking lot will be on your left. The front entrance of the Inn faces the river, so drive around to th entrance portico if ou need help with your luggage.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Check-in, registration, and orientation
(Sunday, August 18)
   
 Afternoon: An Road Scholar registration desk will be set up near the front desk in the lobby of the hotel. A welcome orientation will be held before dinner. Meet Shawnee's Tillinghast Golf Academy pros for a program orientation.
 Dinner: Our dinners at the Shawnee Inn are served buffet-style, and will include: Rolls and butter, two salads, two entrées (one of which will be vegetarian), vegetables, rice or potatoes, dessert, a fresh fruit platter, and coffee. Be careful, the food is good and it's easy to put on a pound or two while you're here.
 Evening: Presentation on golf ethics and etiquette.

Day 2: Golf lessons, play golf.
(Monday, August 19)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy a variety of hot or cold breakfast items at the buffet, in Shawnee Inn's River Room, including omlettes-to-order and fresh fruit.
 Morning: Golf instruction with pros at Tillinghast Golf Academy. Small groups rotate among three to five learning stations.
 Lunch: Our buffet lunches include soup, salads, sandwiche, fresh vegetables, snacks, dessert, and coffee. A different menu is served every day.
 Afternoon: Play nine holes of golf. Instructors available.
 Dinner: Dinner will be at the Shawnee Inn.
 Evening: An after dinner activity will be offered, either a lecture or a video presentation.

Day 3: Golf lessons, barbecue lunch, play golf.
(Tuesday, August 20)
   
 Breakfast: Start the day with a River Room breakfast.
 Morning: Tillinghast Golf Academy pros provide small group instruction:
 Lunch: Weather permitting, we will have a nice barbecue lunch at the Riverside Pavilion.
 Afternoon: Play nine holes of golf. Instructors available.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Inn.
 Evening: An evening concert on the lawn of the Inn.

Day 4: Golf lessons in the morning, free time afternoon, and play the approach course in the evening.
(Wednesday, August 21)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy a healthy buffet breakfast in the River Room.
 Morning: Tillinghast Golf Academy pros provide small group instruction.
 Lunch: Lunch is on your own today. We'll give you a list of good places the locals eat.
 Afternoon: This afternoon is free for you to enjoy the many amenities of the Inn, or visit some of the Pocono area attractions.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Inn.
 Evening: After dinner, we will play the Approach Course.

Day 5: Golf lessons, play golf, dinner at the Gem & Keystone Tavern.
(Thursday, August 22)
   
 Breakfast: Greet the day at the River Room breakfast buffet.
 Morning: Small group instruction at Tillinghast Academy.
 Lunch: Buffet lunch at the Inn.
 Afternoon: This afternoon, you'll put it all together and play the best nine holes of your life.
 Dinner: Farewell dinner at the Gem & Keystone Tavern. The tavern specializes in locally produced food, and offers a variety of beer from our own ShawneeCraft brewery.
 Evening: This evening will be free time for you to relax with your new Road Scholar friends.

Day 6: Putting contest, lunch-to-go, check out and depart.

 Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at the River Room.
