Cirque du Soleil

The amazing street performers of Cirque du Soleil have literally reinvented the circus, thrilling and amazing audiences all over the world. Attend a performance and travel with the circus through history focusing on music, theater, costume design and extraordinary circus acts.



20th Century American Film

Examine the major developments of American filmmaking as they relate to changing values and belief systems. Journey through film clips from silent film to the blockbuster age of the 1990s.



American Spirit

Grant Wood’s American Gothic, Winslow Homer’s Snap the Whip, Frederick Remington’s Bronco Buster and Charles Russell’s cowboys are all icons of American art. Reflect on how art reveals the spirit and character of our country with these true-blue American artists, along with Georgia O’Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Norman Rockwell and others.




Winter Park (Florida)

A nature lover’s dream, Winter Park is a city of 25,000 residents on the northeastern city limits of Orlando. Famed for bricked streets, beautiful parks and lakes, and respected educational institutions, the city retains a small-town ambience.



Accommodations
Catholic retreat and conference center on 480 acres of lush Florida forests and protected wetlands. Motel-style rooms with two double beds, no in-room television or phone. Television in common area.

  Description: Walk the Labyrinth, an ancient meditative prayer form. Enjoy the boardwalk that meanders through lush green woods and ends at a dock by the lake. Watch the many birds that nest around the water, eagles, osprey, great blue heron, wild turkey and more. Or, walk under a hammock of oaks and cypress trees to reach a second dock where you can enjoy the lake, sun and scenery. Join the Franciscan Friars for Morning Prayer and/or Mass each morning – participate or come to observe. San Pedro’s staff welcomes you and invites you to make this your home away from home during your Road Scholar stay.

  Room amenities: Modern, motel-like rooms with private baths. Dresser/desk area, night stand, comfortable reading chair and lamp, radio/alarm. NO PHONES OR TV's IN BEDROOM, but available in common rooms. Fresh linens for the week (more if needed); air conditioning/heat.
  Facility amenities: Wonderful walking paths, set on large Lake Howell in beautiful Winter Park. A country setting (with cows that come to pasture), yet close to the heart of the city of Winter Park, four miles northeast of Orlando. Close to Disney and other theme parks, sunny beaches, Port Canaveral and the Space Coast.

San Pedro Center arranges transfers from Orlando Airport on Sunday only, and the return on Friday with no charge to the participant.

 
Driving Directions
  From I-75 Georgia/Gainesville/Ocala If you are coming from Georgia and points north on I-75, use the Florida Turnpike to Orlando. Exit onto the East-West Expressway, Hwy. 408 (toll road). Go east through downtown Orlando to the Greenway, Hwy 417. Exit left (north) onto Hwy. 417 toward Sanford. Exit at Aloma Avenue, SR 426. Make a left onto Aloma Avenue. Travel for about ½ mile. Make a right turn onto Tuskawilla Road. Turn left at the light, Dike Road, immediately after passing the Middle School. San Pedro Retreat Center is two miles on your right. Come in the second entrance and check into Building 300 (directly in front of the entrance). If you get lost or need information the day of check-in, call 407-671-6322 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; 407-678-4277 after 2:00 p.m.
  Tampa; I-95 Dayton Beach area; Cocoa/Melbourne I-4 is the most direct route from Tampa and points south or from I-95 Daytona Beach area. Heading eastbound from Tampa, exit at Lee Road, go east to Orlando Avenue (Hwy 17-92). Make a left, north bound, to Horatio Avenue in Maitland.Turn right onto Horatio. In approximately four miles make a left onto Dike Road. We are one mile on the left. If you are coming from the north on I-95, the most direct route, and to avoid city traffic, is to exit I-4 onto the Greenway, Hwy. 417, (toll road) at signs that say “Airport.” This exit is just past the St John’s River Bridge, and is a right exit. Head south on the Greenway for approximately six miles. Exit at Aloma Avenue. Turn right on Aloma Avenue (SR 426). Travel for about ½ mile. Make a right turn onto Tuskawilla Road. Turn left at the light, Dike Road, immediately after passing the Middle School. San Pedro Retreat Center is two miles on your right. Coming south on I-95 or from the Cocoa Beach or Melbourne area, use the Beach Line Expressway heading west toward Orlando. Just past the toll booths, turn north onto the Greenway toward Sanford. Exit at Aloma Avenue, SR 426. Make a left onto Aloma Avenue. Travel for about ½ mile. Make a right turn onto Tuskawilla Road. Turn left at the light, Dike Road, immediately after passing the Middle School. San Pedro Retreat Center is two miles on your right.  Afternoon: Arrival and check in at 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Sunday
 Dinner: Buffet dinner located in Building 300. Dinner begins at 5:30 PM
 Evening: Orientation is located in the conference room in Building 300 immediately following dinner. Our first Cirque du Soleil class.

Day 2:
(Monday, February 25)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast
 Morning: American Spirit and 20th C American Film
 Lunch: Soup and Salad Bar; Rotating Menu: Hot Entree or Sandwiches
 Afternoon: A look at the fascinating history of Winter Park.
 Dinner: Salad, Hot Entree, and Dessert
 Evening: Our class on Cirque du Soleil continued.

Day 3:
(Tuesday, February 26)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast
 Morning: American Spirit and 20th C American Film
 Lunch: Early Dinner, including Salad, Entree, and Dessert
 Afternoon: Take a bus trip to Downtown Disney to see a spectacular performance of Cirque du Soleil.
 Dinner: We will be carrying a boxed lunch for our excursion to Cirque du Soleil.
 Evening: See Performance. Return to San Pedro Center

Day 4:
(Wednesday, February 27)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast
 Morning: American Spirit and 20th C American Film

 Afternoon: It's For The Birds! A visit from a local bird rehabilitative facility.
 Dinner: Salad, Hot Entree, and Dessert
 Evening: Our Cirque du Soleil class continued.

Day 5:
(Thursday, February 28)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast
 Morning: American Spirit and 20th C American Spirit
 Lunch: Soup & Salad Bar; Rotating Menu: Hot Entree or Sandwiches
 Afternoon: A trip to downtown Winter Park, and free time to take in the sights, shop, visit a museum, or just sit in our beautiful park.
 Dinner: Enjoy a champagne, candle lit dinner to celebrate as our week slowly draws to a close.
 Evening: Our last Cirque du Soleil class.

 Morning: A final look at our subjects for the week.

A beautiful, natural setting, San Pedro Retreat Center is a 500 acre modern retreat facility. Enjoy beautiful walking paths through the woods to the Lake, or walk amid the canopy of mature oaks down to Lake Howell. Use the docks to watch Eagles, Osprey, Great Blue Heron, Sand Hill Cranes and the many more birds that nest around the lake. Comfortable classrooms, great healthy food (you'll want to take the recipes home), fresh baked cookies. Coffee, tea, beverages always available. Wonderful field trips to various places around Winter Park / Orlando area. Winter Park boasts the largest Tiffany collection at the Morse Museum in downtown Winter Park. Close to many resorts / theme parks, sunny beaches, Merritt Island Wildlife Reserve, Cape Kennedy. Morning services for those who wish to join the Franciscan Friars for morning prayer and Mass.
