Get a behind-the-scenes look at Las Vegas the "Entertainment Capital of the World.” Learn how casinos are regulated to ensure fair play and have a director of surveillance and security show you around the "back of the house." Gain an intimate knowledge of the entertainers who have performed here over the years, and learn why lounge acts have been replaced by larger productions. Go on an exciting excursion to Red Rock Canyon and spend your evenings enjoying both a classic showgirl review and a Cirque du Soleil production.

The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. A signed waiver of liability is required for participation on the Walking Box Ranch tour and the Bally's Back Stage tour. Form will be sent, prior to program start date, and it must be returned to Charlee Zingraf at UNLV Educational Outreach, Box 451019, 4505 Maryland Pkwy. Las Vegas, NV 89154.

A variety of shuttle services are available at McCarran Airport; they are located on the west side of baggage claim, outside door exits 8-14. Please note that there are both group shuttle and stretch limousine services for hire. Prices may vary due to increase in fuel prices. You do not need to call the shuttle services in advance for transportation from McCarran Airport to your hotel. For return service from Harrah's to McCarran Airport you must make reservations with the shuttle service.

  I-15 Northbound to Harrah's Take exit 38 for Flamingo Rd, Keep right at the fork, Follow signs for Flamingo Rd East and merge onto Flamingo Rd. (heading east), turn LEFT on Kovol Ln., stay to the left, follow signs so Harrah's, Turn LEFT at the first light after Winnick Ave. (there is no street name on this light), stay to the left and follow signs to Harrah's self park or Valet.
  I-15 Southbound to Harrah's Take exit 39 for Spring Mountain Rd. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Spring Mountain Rd E. and merge onto Spring Mountain Rd, Continue onto Sands Ave, Turn right onto Koval Ln, stay to the right, make your first RIGHT at the light (there is no street name on this light), stay to the left and follow signs to Harrah's self park or Valet.
  Las Vegas Blvd. (heading North) If you are going north on the Las Vegas Blvd ("The Strip"), there is an entrance to the Harrah's parking garage on the right, after Imperial Palace and before you pass Harrah's.
  McCarran Airport to Harrah's Head southeast on Wayne Newton Blvd toward Airport Departures, Keep left at the fork and merge onto Wayne Newton Blvd, Continue onto Swenson St, Turn left onto Harmon Ave, Turn right onto Koval Ln, stay to the left, follow signs to Harrah's, Turn LEFT at the first light after Winnick Ave. (there is no street name on this light), stay to the left and follow signs to Harrah's self park or Valet.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Registration/Orientation/ Dinner
(Sunday, April 21)
   
 Arrive To: Upon arrival check in at the hotel front desk for your room key. Between 4:00-5:00pm, find the Mardi Gras Tower/Convention Center Elevators (next to Mings Table Restaurant), take the elevator to the second floor and a representative of UNLV will be at the Check-In table on the second floor to meet you and direct you to the Orientation room.
 Afternoon: Orientation – We will take a closer look at our plans for the next four days and give you information about Las Vegas.
 Dinner: Dinner Buffet at the Hotel

Day 2: Lectures/Field Trip
(Monday, April 22)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Breakfast is not included with the commuter rate.
 Morning: Back Stage Tour - See how one of the most famous show productions in Las Vegas functions on a nightly basis. Let one of the showgirls give you the ultimate backstage tour, see where it all comes together, and learn a few secrets of the trade.
 Morning: Take the elevator up to the the top of the Eiffel Tower where you can get a magnificent view of "the Strip" and surrounding city.
 Lunch: Lunch is included with a variety of choices.
 Afternoon: Joe Aldridge of the UNLV Theatre Dept., will give a lecture on Entertainment Engineering. Discover what it takes to put on a huge production show in Las Vegas.
 Dinner: Dinner Buffet at the Hotel
 Evening: Free Time

Day 3: Lectures / Field Trip
(Tuesday, April 23)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Breakfast is not included with the commuter rate.
 Morning: Red Rock Canyon Field Trip - Red Rock Canyon State Park features scenic desert cliffs, buttes and spectacular rock formations. The Red Rock Canyon is located just a few miles west of Las Vegas and encompasses 195,819 acres within the Mojave Desert. Red Rock is an area of world wide geologic interest and beauty with its dramatic shapes and vivid colors.
 Lunch: Lunch is included with a variety of choices.
 Afternoon: Security Director, Jessie Beaudoin, from local Casino to discusses surveillance and money laundering
 Afternoon: James Taylor, a Nevada Gaming Control Board Investigator, will present information on gaming regulations designed to prevent crimes of cheating and fraud. The board's agents make as many as 500 arrests annually for cheating or embezzling from casinos. Learn what's in "The Black Book".
 Dinner: Dinner Buffet at the Hotel

Day 4: Lectures / Field Trip
(Wednesday, April 24)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Breakfast is not included with the commuter rate.
 Morning: Field trip to Walking Box Ranch - Bought in 1931 by legendary silent film stars Rex Bell and Clara Bow. During the 1930s, it covered nearly 400,000 acres, supported 1,800 head of cattle, and was a beautiful, rural, desert escape destination for the couple's famous Hollywood friends including; Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, and Errol Flynn. The 160-acre Walking Box Ranch is now located in the midst of an expansive desert tortoise conservation area.
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Hoover Dam Tour - It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, at the Nevada-Arizona border. Learn the history and participate in a guided exploration into lesser known parts of the Hoover Dam power-plant. While you're there, marvel at the new Colorado River Bridge! Construction on the nearly 2,000 foot long bridge was finished in 2010. This signature bridge spans the Black Canyon (about 1,500 feet south of the Hoover Dam), connects Arizona and Nevada, and is nearly 900-feet above the Colorado River.

 Evening: Experience KA', a Cirque Du Soleil performance at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on "The Strip"

(Thursday, April 25)

 Morning: Examine "Sin City's" rich history with Brian Paco Alvarez
 Lunch: Lunch is included with a variety of choices.
 Afternoon: Field Trip to the Neon Boneyard - home to over 150 donated and rescued signs dating from the 1930’s to present day. Located within a two-acre outdoor museum space, the unrestored collection includes signs from businesses, motels and celebrated casino resorts originally located throughout the Las Vegas valley. After the tour, see where it all began and experience vintage Las Vegas at the famous Freemont Street Experience.
 Dinner: Farewell Dinner
