Unique, religious communities make up the heritage of Lancaster County, Pa. — experience their ways of life as local experts lead you on an exploration of Amish, Mennonite, Moravian and Quaker traditions. Learn about Mennonite history as you pay a visit to the 1719 Hans Herr House, and delve into the stories of the Ephrata Cloisters during an expert-led exploration of their community. Visit a business run by an Old Order Amish family, and take in lectures on Quaker and Native American faiths.

Known worldwide as “Pennsylvania Dutch Country,” Lancaster and the surrounding countryside is home to the nation’s oldest Amish community. One of the longest-running farmer’s markets in the country attracts those seeking fresh produce and baked goods.

  Description: Nestled in 100 acres of peaceful woodland, Black Rock Retreat is located in picturesque Southern Lancaster County, PA.and is surrounded by Amish farmland. Begun 50 years ago by the vision of a local Mennonite leader, Black Rock has grown from a small summer camp to a year-round facility which offers peaceful, comfortable accommodations to many various groups. The Road Scholar program is held in the beautiful and modern Maranatha Retreat Center. You will have time to explore the hiking trails which lead to our "Lake in the Woods" or the Octorara Creek. Also available for your use is a gymnasium and plenty of comfortable seating by a fireplace.

  Room amenities: Our smoke-free motel-style rooms offer a place of quiet and relaxation without the distraction of television and radio. Hair dryers not provided.
  Facility amenities: Black Rock Retreat welcomes Participants in the Maranatha Retreat Center which includes an inviting lobby area which hosts two stone fireplaces and access to a large deck. Also located in the retreat center are the spacious meeting rooms for sessions, dining area and lodging rooms. The motel style rooms offer private baths. Delicious buffet-style meals are prepared by our food service staff and served in our airy dining room or sunny deck overlooking woods. Coffee and cold drinks are available as well as vending machines. In addition to the gymnasium, you are welcome to play a game of ping-pong in our game room. A gift shop with locally made items is available for your enjoyoment. You will enjoy comfort amid nature during your stay at Black Rock.

There is no direct shuttle service available from any of the major airports. However guests can take Greyhound bus or AMTRAK from Philadelphia to Lancaster. Public taxi service is available from Lancaster to Black Rock Retreat.

Driving Directions
  From Baltimore via I-95 and US Route 1 Exit I-95 in Maryland at Route 272 (Exit 100). Travel north on Route 272, until the intersection of US Route 1. Travel north on US Route 1. Get off at Route 472 (Oxford, PA exit). Turn left onto Route 472 and travel north approximately 8.5 miles. Black Rock Retreat is located on the right side of the road approximately 2 miles after the small town of Kirkwood, PA.
  From Harrisburg via the PA Turnpike East Exit the turnpike at exit #247 (Harrisburg). From toll booth take right hand ramp. Take Route 283 east to Lancaster, PA. Exit Route 283 at Route 72 (Manheim Pike). Travel on Route 72 south until it merges with Route 222 south (Prince Street). Travel on Route 222 through the town of Lancaster and continue on Route 222 south all the way to the town of Quarryville. (Watch the left turn that Route 222 south makes after the Willow Valley Resort, south of Lancaster). When in Quarryville, make a left at the first light (there will be a Ford dealership on your right) onto Route 372 east (State Street) and travel approximately 0.7 miles. Turn right onto Route 472 south. Travel approximately 4.5 miles, and Black Rock Retreat will be on your left. (Do not try to find us on Black Rock Road. We do not have an entrance on this road).
  From Philadelphia via I-95 and US Route 11 Exit I-95 in Pennsylvania after Chester, PA at Route 322 West. Travel north until you reach the intersection of US Route 1. Travel south on US Route 1 until you reach the exit for Route 472 (Oxford exit). Turn right onto Route 472 and travel north approximately 8.5 miles. Black Rock Retreat is located on the right side of the road approximately 2 miles after the small town of Kirkwood, PA.
  From Philadelphia via the PA Turnpike West Exit the turnpike at exit #326 (Valley Forge/King of Prussia). Almost immediately get on Route 202 south. Travel on this road until you reach US Route 1 south. Travel approximately 26 miles on Route 1 south until you reach the exit for Route 472. Turn right onto Route 472 and travel north approximately 8.5 miles. Black Rock Retreat is located on the right side of the road approximately 2 miles after the small town of Kirkwood, PA.
  From Wilmington, Delaware Take Route 141 or Route 48 to Route 41 North. Continue on Route 41 North until it intersects with Route 1. Take Route 1 South and get off at the fifth exit (Route 472). Turn right and go north on Route 472 for approximately 8.5 miles. Black Rock Retreat is located on the right side of the road approximately 2 miles after the small town of Kirkwood.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Check in and registration/Orientation
(Sunday, April 14)
   
 Afternoon: Registration and welcome in retreat center lobby.
 Dinner: Dinner is a buffet-style meal served in the Maranatha Retreat Center Dining Room. Our guests will meet in the lobby for instructions. Our goal is to serve our guests healthy and delicious food featuring local tastes and recipes.
 Evening: ORIENTATION/GETTING TO KNOW YOU: Beginning at 7:15PM in our private meeting room we'll have an overview of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety, guidelines, emergency procedures, and any other administrative issues. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes we will notify you as quickly as possible via the SPI. We appreciate your understanding. We will also spend some time becoming better acquainted with participants and program staff. Find out what you have in common beyond a love of learning! The session will be followed by an ice cream sundae bar set up in the retreat center dining room with plenty of time to relax and prepare for the full day of activity and learning ahead.

Day 2: Guided tours of historic Ephrata Cloister and Lititz Moravian Church.
(Monday, April 15)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Morning: See a glimpse of this interesting part of Lancaster's history as we are guided around the Ephrata Cloisters. Also included will be a stop at an Amish farm and gift shop operated by a charming and welcoming Old Order Amish family.
 Lunch: Boxed lunch provided during the tour.
 Afternoon: Travel to beautiful Lititz for tour of Lititz Moravian Church. Learn about the Moravian heritage and the history of this quaint town.
 Dinner: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Evening: PBS film: Amish - People of Preservation

Day 3: Excursion to Downtown Lancaster City and Landis Valley Museum
(Tuesday, April 16)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Morning: Leave on charter bus for Downtown Lancaster City. Our day will possibly include a walking tour of the city as well as Demuth Museum and historic Lancaster Central Market.
 Lunch: Lunch on your own in Lancaster City.
 Afternoon: Learning continues by visiting the interesting Landis Valley Museum and enjoying a guided "Taste of Pennsylvania Dutch" tour.
 Dinner: Experience a traditional meal in an Old Order Amish home.
 Evening: Savor the experiences of the day as we meander back to Black Rock Retreat on peaceful country roads.

Day 4: Amish and Mennonite lecture and free time
(Wednesday, April 17)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Morning: "The Radical Reformation - Then and Now" lecture by Brinton Rutherford about the Amish and Mennonites.
 Lunch: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Afternoon: Free time.
 Dinner: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Evening: Local presenter, Carolyn Mellinger, will share from her life - "Growing Up Mennonite" followed by opportunity to make (and eat) your own soft pretzel.

Day 5: Lancaster County Three Histories Tour - featuring Swiss German, Native American and African American Story Tellers
(Thursday, April 18)
   
 Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Morning: Leave on coach for "Three Stories" tour. Sites include Bart Meeting House, site of Christiana Resistance (Underground Railroad) and 1719 Hans Herr House.
 Lunch: Boxed lunch.
 Afternoon: "Three Stories" tour continues with travel to Columbia, Conestoga, Habecker Mennonite Church and sites in Lancaster City and Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society.
 Dinner: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Evening: "Quakers in Our Midst" lecture by Brinton Rutherford.

Day 6:

 Breakfast: Buffet-style meal served in the Retreat Center dining room.
 Morning: Program concludes with wrap-up session.
