The Greatest Generation” experienced some of the most dramatic and events and changes in American history during the 1940s. Join us to recall and relive some of the most celebrated and iconic aspects of the era.




Highlights

• Led by an expert movie buff, examine films that helped define the spirit of the age — at least as Hollywood saw it — along with leading stars and directors. Watch and discuss clips from movies including “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
• See “The Effect of WW II on American Lives and Baseball” and hear first hand from an All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player, then attend a Major League Baseball spring training Cactus League game!
• Attend the largest 1940s-style Big Band Dance in the nation! Dancing not required — enjoy dinner, music! View WWII Aircraft on display at the Commemorative Air Force Aviation Museum. Visit Arizona Capitol Museum and see artifacts from WWII including parts from the USS Arizona. Plus, take a field trip to see what remains of the POW Camp at Papago Park.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Check-In and Program Registration/Orientation
(Tuesday, March 5)
   
 Afternoon: Please arrive at the hotel to register at 5:00 pm. Check into your room at the front desk and then register with Road Scholar staff in the Main lobby. You will then have until 6:00 PM to settle into your room.
 Dinner: Meals unless otherwise indicated may be at the hotel or a local restaurant. Please arrive at the time indicated on your itinerary.
 Evening: After dinner we will have orientation. This will provide you with information about the hotel, program itinerary, instructors, venues and on site staff. This is also a good opportunity to ask questions!

Day 2: Sinatra, Papago Park, and Spring Training Baseball Game
(Wednesday, March 6)
   
 Breakfast: All breakfasts are deluxe continental. Come down by the time indicated on the itinerary; just be sure to allow enough time to arrive promptly for the morning activity!
 Morning: History of USA's most famous POW Camp
 Lunch: Enjoy a cookout lunch and class at Papago Park, a former POW camp.
 Afternoon: Explore the ruin of an 800 year-old platform mound possibly used by the Hohokam for ceremonies or as an administrative center. An excavated ballcourt and two full-scale reproductions of prehistoric Hohokam homes can be viewed along the ruin trail. The site also includes some of the last remaining intact Hohokam irrigation canals. The museum offers expert-led talks of the platform mound and museum exhibits, as well as other places of archaeological interest in the Salt River Valley and the state.
 Afternoon: Tour the state capital inside and out!
 Dinner: Meals unless otherwise indicated. They may be at the hotel or out at a local restaurant. Please arrive at the time indicated on your itinerary.

Day 3: Film Class
(Thursday, March 7)

 Morning: WWII and Impact on American Lives and Sports. Depart for ballgame at 11:15AM
 Afternoon: Enjoy a Major League Spring Training Cactus Leauge Game! Seattle Mariners @ Oakland A's Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Enjoy lunch on your own at the ballgame.
 Dinner: Meals unless otherwise indicated may be at the hotel or a local restaurant.
 Evening: Learn about Native Americans and their culture.

Day 4: 40's Tunes/ the Commemorative Air Force Museum
(Friday, March 8)

 Morning: Dissect classic fims, such as 'It's a Wonderful Life,' with a noted critic and film historian.
 Lunch: Meals unless otherwise indicated. They may be at the hotel or out at a local restaurant. Please arrive at the time indicated on your itinerary.
 Afternoon: Here first hand from an All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player
 Dinner: Meals unless otherwise indicated may be at the hotel or a local restaurant.

Day 5: WWII Impact on Sports / Attend WWII Big Band Dance
(Saturday, March 9)

 Morning: Class - Frank Sinatra.
 Lunch: Lunch will either be a delicious meal at the hotel or a savory dish at a favorite local restaurant.
 Afternoon: Dance! Participants can dress up in 1940's USA attire for Big Band Dance but is optional. Dancing not required - enjoy dinner, music and watching! The Commemorative Air Force Aviation Museum offers warbird rides in certain WWII planes for an additional fee.
 Dinner: Dinner on your own at the Big Band Dance
