Driving Directions
  I-75 From I-75 exit #210 (Fruitville Rd) go west six miles until the road ends at Tamiami Trail, also known as U.S. 41. Turn left and continue south three blocks to Gulfstream Avenue. Make a right onto the Causeway, John Ringling Bridge and continue to St. Armands Circle. Continue halfway around the circle and follow the signs to Lido Beach and make a left at the beach onto Ben Franklin Drive. The Lido Beach Resort will be on your right just past the public beach and is approx. 7.5 miles from the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Arrival & Check-in Registration & Orientation, Getting to know you
(Sunday, January 6)
   
 Arrive To: PROGRAM REGISTRATION: Please take the elevator to the 8th floor to visit the Road Scholar registration table between 3:30 - 4:55pm.

HOTEL CHECK-In: 4:00pm, room may be ready earlier.

 Afternoon: ORIENTATION: Begins at 5:00pm in our private meeting room. We'll have an over view of the program ahead and review the up-to-date schedule, responsibilities, safety, guidelines, emergency procedures, and any other administrative issues. Please be aware that local circumstances may require adjusting program elements. In the event of changes we will notify you as quickly as possible. We appreciate your understanding.
 Dinner: The dinner will be served at the hotel in the private meeting room at approx. 6:00pm. (There will be a vegetarian option available if you noted a vegetarian preference on your Health & Safety form.)
 Evening: GETTING TO KNOW YOU: After dinner we'll spend some time becoming better acquainted with participants and program staff. Find out what you have in common beyond a love of learning! The rest of the evening is yours to continue making new friends or just to relax and prepare for the full day of activity ahead.

Day 2: Thrill to the music of the Rogers & Hart, Rodin & sculpture, afternoon class on Tiffany.
(Monday, January 7)

Note: All classes at hotel, option afternoon walk on the beach.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and includes; a large assortment of fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, pancakes or French Toast with warm maple syrup, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and freshly brewed coffee, decaffeinated coffee, herbal teas, orange and prune juice.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart were introduced in 1919, when both attended Columbia University and were asked to write an amateur club show. After writing together for several years, they produced their first successful Broadway musical, The Garrick Gaieties, in 1925, which introduced their hit song, "Manhattan." Listen and discuss their musicals and films.

PRESENTATION: Discuss the interrelationships of Art Forms and Art Movements. Reflect on the social values and hopes in the sculpture of Auguste Rodin. Learn why he was never accepted into Paris's foremost school of art.

 Lunch: Lunch will be in our private meeting room.
 Afternoon: PRESENTATION: Louis Comfort Tiffany is best known for his work in stained glass. Discuss how he was the American artist most associated with the Art Noveaux and Aesthetic Movements. Brush up on your knowledge of how he designed stained glass windows and lamps, glass mosaics, blown glass, ceramics, jewelry, enamels and metalwork.

OPTIONAL: Afternoon walk on the beach right outside your hotel room.

 Dinner: Enjoy dinner at the hotel in our private meeting room.
 Evening: PERFORMANCE: Musical Entertainment

Day 3: Rodgers & Hart their music, Dale Chihuly, Internet Health, evening dinner on your own at historic St. Armands Circle.
(Tuesday, January 8)

Note: Walk to St. Armands Circle or take the hotel shuttle for dinner on your own, some restaurants are close to the drop off point and some are up to one 1/2 of a mile away round trip walking.



   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and will be a continental breakfast on the third and fifth mornings.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Rodgers & Hart their music, lives and relationship. Break

PRESENTATION: Increase your knowledge of Dale Chihuly's beginnings from the Universities of Washington, Wisconsin, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). In 1968, after receiving a Fulbright Fellowship, he went to work at the Venini glass factory in Venice. Discuss how he observed the team approach to blowing glass, which is critical to the way he works today.

 Lunch: Lunch will be in our private meeting room.
 Afternoon: PRESENTATION: The Internet: Explore Your Health & Wellness. Learn something about taking care of yourself, while learning how to mine for facts to help you achieve this goal.
 Dinner: Walk or hotel shuttle will take you to St. Armands Circle, renowned as a continental marketplace. The Circle is a charming and graceful synthesis of past and present. Relax and enjoy a meal from a plethora of award winning restaurants, from gourmet snacks to candlelit feasts, you'll find it all on St. Armands Circle.
 Evening: EXCURSION: Continue to explore the Circle and the unique Ringling statuary throughout the area.

Day 4: Explore the Chihuly Collection's stunning pieces of world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly's artwork, see a glass studio and hot shop.
(Wednesday, January 9)

Note: Walk up to 3/4 of a mile exploring collections.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and includes; a large assortment of fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, pancakes or French Toast with warm maple syrup, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and freshly brewed coffee, decaffeinated coffee, herbal teas, orange and prune juice.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Learn how Hart's lyrics, facile, vernacular, dazzling, sometimes playful, sometimes melancholic, raised the standard for Broadway songwriting. His ability to write cleverly and to come up with unexpected, polysyllabic rhymes was something of a trademark and discover how he also had the even rarer ability to write with utmost simplicity and deep emotion.

FIELD TRIP: Explore the Chihuly Collection to enhance your classroom lecture with a stunning collection of world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly's artwork. Chihuly's spectacular large-scale installations such as Ruby Red Icicle Chandelier created specifically for the Collection along with several popular series works including Macchia, Ikebana, Niijima Floats, Persians and Tumbleweeds which have thrilled audiences around the globe. Each space has been designed individually to complement each installation producing unique visual experiences. Opportunity to watch an educational video presentation in an intimate theater.

 Lunch: Lunch in a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: After lunch explore a glass studio and hot shop for a unique opportunity to get behind the scenes and observe resident glass artists creating unique works of art. See one of the glass demonstrations as the artist takes the audience through the process of creating a one of a kind piece of art glass. From gathering the molten glass from the furnace, to working it on the pontil pipe and glory hole, to its final cool down process in the annealing kiln, students will have a new appreciation for this art form that is centuries old. View the gaffer blowing glass, while the assistant narrates in detail the science behind glass, the artistic vision guiding the process and all of the steps involved as the work is being produced.
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel in our private meeting room.
 Evening: DVD PRESENTATION: To be determined.

Day 5: Morning excursion to explore art galleries, Lunch Downtown Sarasota, Internet Health: two sessions, evening performance.
(Thursday, January 10)

Note: Explore Downtown Sarasota at your own pace. Participants will be dropped off directly in front of the theatre and picked up after the play in the front also.
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and will be a continental breakfast on the third and fifth mornings.
 Morning: EXCURSION: Board our bus to explore the eclectic galleries in Downtown Sarasota at your own pace.

 Lunch: Enjoy lunch in Downtown Sarasota.
 Afternoon: Board bus to return to the hotel.

PRESENTATION: Focusing on additional sources of personal health on the Internet These sessions are taught by an MD who is a researcher.

Break

PRESENTATION: Delve into lifestyle, diet, supplements, exercise, signs, symptoms, tests and procedures, treatment options and plans.

 Dinner: Dinner is at the hotel in our private meeting room or local dinner theatre.
 Evening: PERFORMANCE: See tba at a local dinner theatre or at a theatre.

Day 6: Wrap up your week with music!, pick up souvenir photos, program ends with box lunch to go or stay.
(Friday, January 11)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast will be served in the private meeting room and includes; a large assortment of fresh fruit, oatmeal, yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, pancakes or French Toast with warm maple syrup, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and freshly brewed coffee, decaffeinated coffee, herbal teas, orange and prune juice.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Wrap of the magical music of Rodgers & Hart.

Wrap up of week and pick up souvenir photos.

 Lunch: A box lunch is offered on Fridays to allow students who need to catch an early flight to take their lunch with them. Students who do not need to leave can enjoy their lunch in the meeting room or on the patio by the pool. Programs ends after lunch.
