Mild spring weather is perfect for walks, hikes and "fat tire" bicycling in Zion National Park, Snow Canyon State Park and the surrounding red rock area. Plunge into a kaleidoscopic landscape where ecosystems collide — the Great Basin, Mojave Desert and Colorado Plateau. This corner of Utah provides a perfect outdoor classroom and amazing opportunities to explore by foot or bike.

Activity Particulars

Trails are paved or groomed, some cover uneven terrain and have elevation change. Opportunities to walk 1-2 miles, hike 3-7 miles and spend two afternoons on all terrain bicycles.

St. George

The largest city in south-central Utah is at the center of the region's arches, mesas, pinnacles and buttes, in close proximity to Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon national parks, as well as Lake Powell and prehistoric archaeological sites.

  Description: The College Inn is located in the heart of the historic district in St. George, six blocks from Dixie State University's campus. The historic district offers restored pioneer homes and buildings. This facility is used specifically for Road Scholar and other educational groups it is not used as housing for college students. St. George has beautiful red rock cliff and lava rock mesa as back drop with larger mountains and rock formations that can be seen in the distance. A lounge area with couches, DirecTV, a refrigerator, soda pop machine, guest laundry and microwave are available for your use. We also have a beautiful heated pool and hot tub for your enjoyment. The rooms do not have phones or televisions, but a public phone is available at the front desk.

Driving Directions
  Helpful information as you plan! ~~~Apprx. Air Travel Times to St. George from: Salt Lake City (Delta Connection-Skywest) 1 hour, Los Angeles (United Express) 1 1/2 hours
  Las Vegas From Las Vegas travel north on I-15 approximately 120 miles (two hours) to St. George, Utah. Take the St. George exit number 6, Bluff Street. At the exit stop light turn left and travel northwest on Bluff Street for about 2 miles to 100 South Street, turn right. The College Inn is 123 East 100 South. Enter the parking lot on the east side of the building.
  Salt Lake City Travel South on I-15 about 300 miles to St. George. Exit at St. George Blvd. exit number 8. Turn right onto St. George Blvd. Travel west 9 blocks to 200 East Street. Turn left and travel two blocks. At 100 South turn right. Travel 1/2 block to College Inn. The address is 123 East 100 South. Enter the parking lot on the east side of the building.
Elevation Note: Zion National Park, east side is the highest at about 5,500 ft. We go to view points and walk trails

Equipment Requirements: Walking shoes with good tread and hiking pole may be helpful for field study in Zion, etc. All bicycling equipment is provided.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Welcome and Introductions/Orientation
(Monday, March 18)
   
 Arrive To: 3:00 - 5:00 pm - Arrive at the College Inn for check in. The College Inn is located at 123 East 100 South in St. George, Utah. It is about 6 blocks from the Dixie State College Campus.
 Dinner: 5:30 pm - Transfer to Dixie State College's Red Rock Cafe for a delicious banquet dinner.
 Evening: Following dinner have a brief welcome orientation and overview of our daily activities and itinerary.

Day 2: Welcome to Utah's Dixie. Explore Snow Canyon State Park/Snow Canyon State Park geology field trip! Explore beautiful red rock formations. Option to bike!
(Tuesday, March 19)
   
 Breakfast: 7:00 - 8:00 am - Enjoy a continental breakfast at the College Inn which includes hard boiled eggs, hot oatmeal, cereal, fruit, yogurt, pastries, toast, milk & juice.
 Morning: Meet in the lobby for a geology overview. Then depart for hiking and biking in Snow Canyon State Park.
 Lunch: Box lunch on the trail.
 Afternoon: Continue in Snow Canyon State Park. This beautiful state park provides incredible scenery of red rock cliffs, rolling mounds of petrified sand dunes and lava (basalt) rock formations. Return to St. George for a local history presentation.
 Dinner: 5:30-6:30 pm - Enjoy a Grand Buffet at Chuck-A-Rama. Choose from a variety of fresh salads, homemade dinner rolls, barbecue ribs, baked or fried chicken, roast beef, sliced turkey breast, mashed potatoes & gravy, peas, green beans, corn, scones, assorted beverages. Save room for dessert, apple pie, cakes, cobbler, brownies, and soft serve ice cream or yogurt.
 Evening: See up close and personal a live falcon, hawk, and golden eagle. Martin Tyner, a federally licensed eagle falconer, presents "Birds of Prey".

Day 3: Explore Kolob Canyon the west portion of Zion National Park.
(Wednesday, March 20)
   
 Breakfast: 7:00 - 8:00 am - Enjoy a continental breakfast at the College Inn which includes hard boiled eggs, hot oatmeal, cereal, fruit, yogurt, pastries, toast, milk & juice.
 Morning: Depart for hiking in Kolob Canyon, the west portion of Zion National Park.
 Lunch: Box lunch on the trail.
 Afternoon: Continue exploring the majestic stone walls of Kolob Canyon. Return to St. George
 Dinner: Dinner
 Evening: Rest and relax! Free evening to explore St. George or an optional activity in the community.

Day 4: Geology and excursion in Zion National Park
(Thursday, March 21)
   
 Breakfast: 7:00 - 8:00 am - Enjoy a continental breakfast at the College Inn which includes hard boiled eggs, hot oatmeal, cereal, fruit, yogurt, pastries, toast, milk & juice.
 Morning: Depart hike and explore the beauty of Zion National Park.
 Lunch: Box lunch on the trail.
 Afternoon: Continue the geology exploration in Zion National Park.
 Dinner: Dinner
 Evening: Ecology presentation in the lobby classroom.

Day 5: Biking the famous Gooseberry Mesa near Zion National Park
(Friday, March 22)
   
 Breakfast: 7:00 - 8:00 am - Enjoy a continental breakfast at the College Inn which includes hard boiled eggs, hot oatmeal, cereal, fruit, yogurt, pastries, toast, milk & juice.
 Morning: Depart for a bike ride at the famous Gooseberry Mesa. Gooseberry Mesa is a tabletop mesa just west of Zion National Park. Colossal sandstone monuments and shadow-filled gorges can be seen framing Zion Canyon from numerous locations. Several trails allow you to pick your own brand of awesome.
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Continue biking the trails around Zion National Park. Travel and return to St. George
 Dinner: Enjoy a spectacular Closing Dinner at Anasazi Steakhouse & Gallery. You are surrounded by photographic art by William Carr, unique metal designs by Darrick Phallon of Elevado Metalworks and cut metal art by Reflections in Metal. Other works by skilled artisans are also showcased. Anasazi's signature specialty is our Hot Volcanic Rock. Premium entrees are delivered to your table seared and sizzling on our Hot Volcanic Rocks. Diners bask in the aroma as their entrees cook right before their eyes. Every bite is hot, juicy and incredibly delicious, ready to be enjoyed as is or dipped in a variety of our specially-created dipping sauces. It's a most unique and fun dining experience.

  St. George, Utah Historic Sites, restored pioneer buildings and homes
There are 27 Historic Sites, restored pioneer buildings and homes all within walking distance of the College Inn. When you arrive, we have a map highlighting each building or home. During the summer months a special tour called St. George Live is offered. The guides dress in pioneer clothing and tell the history as though they were the pioneer that built the home, etc. If you only have a little time to visit the historic sites, you will want to include the following. Brigham Young's Winter Home 67 West 200 North; St. George Tabernacle located on the southwest corner of Main Street and Tabernacle St.;St. George Opera House 200 North Main Street; St. George Temple Visitors Center 250 East 400 South. ~~~Historic St. George Walking Tour, 435-634-5942 Begin your tour at the Old Pioneer c\Courthouse at 100 East & St George Boulevard (Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center). From there, spend an enjoyable hour or two strolling the street of early-day St George, where many pre-turn of-the-century public buildings and private homes still stand as reminders of a by-gone-era. You may pick up a printed map and descriptions of each building at the Chamber Visitor's Center as you begin your tour. ~~~Historic St George Live Tour, 435-634-5942 200 North & Main, St George, UT 84770 If you are fortunate enough to be in the area anytime between Memorial Day and Labor Day don't miss the opportunity to acquaint yourself with the history and culture of the area.   Zion Canyon IMAX
Zion Canyon IMAX Open 7 days a week 11am-8pm (summer hours) Call for winter hours. Hollywood films are up to 9 times the size of the regular screen! View the IMAX film 'Zion Canyon Treasure of the Gods'. The theatre's giant IMAX screen is the largest IMAX theater in Utah and one of the largest in the world measuring 60 feet high and 82 feet across. Sound is delivered through an eight track digital Surround Sound system capable of 22,000 watts. The giant IMAX screen is a great addition to the adventure of Zion National Park. Treasure of the God's Movie offers aerial and ground views of Zion and surrounding areas and sights difficult to see on your own and captures Zion legends in a dramatic way. Experience the myth, magic, and drama of Zion Canyon, with scenes from southwest National Parks and Native American Lands. The Zion Canyon Giant Screen Theatre offers one of the most spectacular film experiences available anywhere. Zion Canyon Treasure of the Gods is a 40-minute film that stretches across time and seasons, exploring the hidden depths and legends of Zion Canyon.
