Join experts on a one-of-a-kind cross-country skiing and snowshoeing adventure in America’s Southwest. Immersed in nature’s beauty during the quiet season of winter, learn from instructors with intimate knowledge of local trails, geology and ecology, and gain unique access to rarely seen areas like Cedar Breaks National Monument. Evenings illuminate ecology, geology and Southwest wildlife, including an up-close look at winter raptors.

St. George

The largest city in south-central Utah is at the center of the region's arches, mesas, pinnacles and buttes, in close proximity to Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon national parks, as well as Lake Powell and prehistoric archaeological sites.

Darrell McMahon

Darrell McMahon has worked in natural resource management for more than three decades and has extensive experience as a wildlife biologist, entomologist and habitat biologist. In addition to teaching college courses in geology and natural history, Darrell has taught at Dixie State University and Southern Utah University the past seven years and has knowledge of natural history, forest ecology and wildlife.
 
Christopher Mason

Christopher Mason has spent a lifetime involved in outdoor recreation, much of it on the campus of Southern Utah University. He has taught for 35 years and developed activities in and around Southern Utah's Color Country. In addition to teaching team and individual sports at SUU, he has led workshops on backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, climbing, canyoneering, hiking, kayaking and spelunking. He has also participated in yurt skiing and Boy Scout skiing weekends.

  Description: The College Inn is located in the heart of the historic district in St. George, six blocks from Dixie State College campus. The historic district offers restored pioneer homes and buildings. This facility is used specifically for Road Scholar and other educational groups it is not used as housing for college students. St. George has beautiful red rock cliff and lava rock mesa as back drop with larger mountains and rock formations that can be seen in the distance. A lounge area with couches, DirecTV, a refrigerator, soda pop machine, guest laundry and microwave are available for your use. We also have a beautiful heated pool and hot tub for your enjoyment. The rooms do not have phones or televisions, but a public phone is available at the front desk.

  Helpful information as you plan! ~~~Apprx. Air Travel Times to St. George from: Salt Lake City (Delta Connection-Skywest) 1 hour, Los Angeles (United Express) 1 1/2 hours
  Las Vegas From Las Vegas travel north on I-15 approximately 120 miles (two hours) to St. George, Utah. Take the St. George exit number 6, Bluff Street. At the exit stop light turn left and travel northwest on Bluff Street for about 2 miles to 100 South Street, turn right. The College Inn is 123 East 100 South. Enter the parking lot on the east side of the building.
  Salt Lake City Travel South on I-15 about 300 miles to St. George. Exit at St. George Blvd. exit number 8. Turn right onto St. George Blvd. Travel west 9 blocks to 200 East Street. Turn left and travel two blocks. At 100 South turn right. Travel 1/2 block to College Inn. The address is 123 East 100 South. Enter the parking lot on the east side of the building.
Elevation Note: Bryce National Park is the highest elevation at about 8,500 ft we walk trails and go to view points.

Equipment Requirements: We suggest you bring a day pack that you can put on your back or around your waist to carry your water bottle and other items. You can bring your own ski and snow shoe equipment or rent it here for $40 per person. If equipment is needed please call us at least two weeks prior to the start date at (435) 634-2050.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Welcome and introductions in the College Inn Meeting room/Orientation, presentation and introduction to snow shoe, cross country skiing and areas we explore!
(Wednesday, February 13)
   
 Arrive To: 3:00 pm MST Arrive at the College Inn for check in. The College Inn is located at 123 East 100 South in St. George, Utah. It is about 6 blocks from the Dixie State College Campus.
 Afternoon: Welcome and introductions in the College Inn Meeting Room.
 Dinner: 5:30 PM - Dinner.
 Evening: Following dinner have a brief orientation about daily activities and the itinerary then enjoy a presentation and introduction to snow shoeing and cross country skiing as well as the natural world we explore. All field trips are designed to educate and encourage the healthful enjoyment of the great outdoors during the pristine winter conditions. We will continue to have trail side instruction/talks so this class will set the stage for the remaining outings.

Day 2: Welcome to cross country skiing and the natural beauty of Cedar Breaks National Monument!
(Thursday, February 14)
   
 Breakfast: 7:00-8:00 AM - Breakfast.
 Morning: Meet your cross country ski instructor. Have a presentation on cross country skiing. Travel to Cedar City for lunch.
 Lunch: Enjoy lunch and those needing skis will get fitted with equipment for cross country skiing.
 Afternoon: Welcome to cross country skiing and the natural beauty of Cedar Breaks National Monument! Ski near Cedar Breaks National Monument. (2-6 miles, we will take it at an easy pace as everyone gets acclimated.) The cross country ski instructor and naturalist ski with you as you have ski tips, pointers and study the trees of Southern Utah and geology of Cedar Breaks National Monument. Depart for Abbey Inn Cedar City. Check In.
 Dinner: 5:30-6:30 PM - Dinner
 Evening: Enjoy a special winter ecology and geology presentation in the hotel meeting room.

Day 3: Cross country ski or snowshoe on Cedar Mountain.
(Friday, February 15)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast included.
 Morning: Snow shoe or ski as you explore Majestic Cedar Mountain. Some of the nation's best snow conditions occur year after year in the mountains east of Cedar City. Nordic skiers comment that the snow conditions and terrain on Cedar Mountain, including Dixie National Forest and Cedar Breaks National Monument, are some of the best in the country for un-groomed trails.
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Continue skiing/snowshoeing on Cedar Mountain.
 Dinner: Dinner included.
 Evening: "Lets Get Wild" presentation with Darrell McMahon in meeting room.

Day 4: Cross country ski or snowshoe in Bryce Canyon National Park
(Saturday, February 16)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast included.
 Morning: Snow shoe and explore amazing Bryce Canyon National Park with a naturalist! Over 30 km of groomed trails wind through forests of Ponderosa pine, meadows and majestic overlooks, offering one of the best ways to enjoy the peaceful scenery and fresh clean air of Bryce. Trails will include canyon overlook views of the hoo doos and unique formations of Bryce with some trail side talks to learn about how the elements of winter effect and shape the geology of Bryce.
 Lunch: Lunch at Ruby's Inn Restaurant
 Afternoon: Continue skiing/snowshoeing Bryce Canyon with a visit to Paria point.
 Dinner: Dinner included.
 Evening: Free time.

Day 5: Cross country ski Bryce Canyon National Park
(Sunday, February 17)
   
 Breakfast: 9:00 AM - Breakfast.
 Morning: Snow shoe or ski Bryce Canyon National Park with a naturalist! Trails will include Bryce point to Sunset point.
 Lunch: Lunch at a restaurant.
 Afternoon: Continue geology, snowshoeing and exploring within the beauty of Bryce Canyon National Park on groomed trails from Ruby's Inn.
 Dinner: Dinner included.
 Evening: Enjoy a free evening.

Day 6: Cross country ski Bryce's Fairyland/Closing Dinner
(Monday, February 18)

 Morning: Go to Bryce Canyon National Park Visitors Center watch video and tour museum, then onto a ski trip into multi-colored Fairyland.
 Lunch: Lunch included.
 Afternoon: Travel and return to St. George. Check in at the College Inn.
 Dinner: Closing Dinner. Enjoy a recap of the scenic beauty you were able to see and explore this week!
