Hear the crack of the bat and see the world’s best players up close at four spring training games (weather permitting). Meet retired players and umpires, learn about the Negro League and delve into the history of baseball, its rules and its legends. Learn about and attend games of three storied teams who train in Florida: the Philadelphia Phillies, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Baltimore Orioles.




Highlights

• Enjoy four spring training ballgames (schedule released in December) featuring the Phillies, Pirates and O’s.
• Delve into the history of the old ballgame from the 19th century to today.
• “C’mon blue!” Learn about life calling balls and strikes from a retired MLB ump.

Situated on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico on Florida's west coast, Sarasota is rich in cultural treasures and recreational attractions within a short driving distance, including the outstanding John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the Ringling Museum of the Circus, art galleries, golf courses and beaches.

Richard Westcott

Rich Westcott has been a writer and editor for nearly 40 years. He is the author of “A Century of Philadelphia Sports” and ten other books, including “Phillies Encyclopedia.” All of Rich’s books reflect a sports theme, but the majority of his writings are related to baseball and the Phillies team. He is the founder of Phillies Report, the nation’s oldest, continuous baseball team newspaper. Rich also teaches sports writing at LaSalle University and is an official scorer at Phillies games.
 
Mike Hawn

Mike Hawn is a graduate of the Harry Wendlestedt School for Umpires and a member of the Florida Collegiate Umpires in the Sunshine State Conference. He works as a back-up umpire for minor league spring training games. Mike has been an umpire for over 30 years.
 
Allen Goldis

Al Goldis was a professional baseball player, coach and sports information director, prior to re-entering the game of baseball as the East Coast Supervisor of Scouting for the California Angels. His career then led him to lead the scouting departments of the Chicago White Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers, and serve in various leadership ositions with the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets. Al was inducted into the Major League Baseball Scouting Hall of Fame in 2009.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Registration/Orientation
(Sunday, March 17)
   
 Arrive To: Registration with Road Scholar is between 3:30PM to 4:45PM. Hotel check-in is at 3:00PM, room may be ready earlier.
 Afternoon: At 4:45PM Orientation of the week starts.
 Dinner: Dinner will be at the hotel. Forms are sent out in advance to see if participants are vegetarian.
 Evening: After dinner there is a getting to know you session for participants to become better acquainted.

Day 2: Two morning lectures, Spring Training baseball game, "Red Sox @Pittsburgh Pirates."
(Monday, March 18)

Note: Must be able to walk from distant parking lot to and from the stadium, plus be able to climb stairs at the baseball stadium.



   
 Breakfast: A continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: The Beginning of Baseball<> Break <> PRESENTATION: Retired Major League Pitcher
 Lunch: Participants can purchase their own lunch at the ballpark or restaurant close to the stadium.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Apply your new knowledge from morning lectures as you watch a baseball game "Boston Red Sox vs Pittsburgh Pirates at McKechnie Field in Bradenton." After game is over bus departs for hotel.
 Dinner: Dinner will be at the hotel catered by the hotel restaurant.
 Evening: Enjoy a baseball DVD.

Day 3: Attend a Pittsburgh Pirate Practice session, Spring Training baseball game, "NYY @Philadelphia Phillies."
(Tuesday, March 19)

Note: Must be able to walk from distant parking lot to and from the stadium, plus be able to climb stairs at the baseball stadium.



   
 Breakfast: A breakfast with two hot items, plus the typical continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Travel to a Pittsburgh Pirate Practice session. Then bus departs for Clearwater for the NYY vs Philadelphia Phillies at Bright House Field.
 Lunch: Participants can purchase their own lunch at the ballpark or restaurant close to the stadium.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Participants will attend a baseball game "NYY vs Philadelphia Phillies," paying special attention to the umpire. After the game the bus will return students back to the hotel.
 Dinner: Dinner will be catered by the hotel restaurant in our private meeting room.
 Evening: PRESENTATION: Q & A Session: With a Minor League Pirates Player

Day 4: Presentation by baseball expert, Spring Training baseball game, "Toronto Blue Jays @Baltimore Orioles."

 Breakfast: A continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Signs, Signals & Coaches. PRESENTATION: Negro League Baseball
 Lunch: Participants can purchase their own lunch at the ballpark or restaurant close to the stadium.
 Afternoon: FIELD TRIP: Participants will attend a spring training baseball game 1:05pm Baltimore Orioles vs Toronto Blue Jays at Ed Smith Stadium, Sarasota. Watch game with new insight from morning presenter. After game is over bus will return students to hotel.
 Dinner: DINNER: Will be in the hotel's private meeting room.
 Evening: FREE NIGHT

Day 5: Lecture from an umpire, noted Phillies author then Spring Training baseball games, "Pittsburgh Pirates @Baltimore Orioles," for Pirate and Oriole fans. "Philadelphia Phillies @Boston Red Sox in Ft Myers," for Phillie's fans.
(Thursday, March 21)

Note: Must be able to walk from distant parking lot to and from the stadium, plus be able to climb stairs at the baseball stadium.



   
 Breakfast: A breakfast with two hot items, plus the typical continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Learn more about the demands and challenges of an umpire. PRESENTATION: Noted Phillies author Rich Westcott will share his stories and experiences about the Phillies.
 Lunch: Participants can purchase their own lunch at the hotel restaurant or visit a local restaurant.
 Afternoon: Free Afternoon or enjoy a baseball DVD.
 Dinner: Dinner will be at the game on your own.
 Evening: FIELD TRIP: Both games are at night."Pittsburgh Pirates @Baltimore Orioles," for Pirate and Oriole fans. "Philadelphia Phillies @Boston Red Sox in Ft Myers," for Phillie's fans.

Day 6: Retired Baseball Scout shares his experiences.
(Friday, March 22)
   
 Breakfast: A continental breakfast is available.
 Morning: PRESENTATION: Retired baseball scout will share his wealth of experiences over the years. This is your opportunity to ask questions you have always wanted to ask.
 Lunch: A chance to create your own sandwich for lunch is offered on the last day to allow students who need to catch an early flight to take their lunch with them. Students who do not need to leave can enjoy their lunch in the classroom or on the patio by the pool. Program ends after lunch.
