Participants will stay at a brand-new beachfront hotel adjacent to the widest and most pristine beach on Jekyll Island. Stroll through a rare maritime forest over protected sand dunes.The hotel is just minutes away from the shops, attractions of Jekyll Island’s historic district, and the golf/tennis center. Program cost excludes one dinner to enjoy on your own.

Ragtime, Tin Pan Alley And Dixieland Jazz

Spend a week with one of the country's leading authorities and performers in the field of Ragtime, Dixieland and turn-of-the century popular music. Learn about great musicians like Scott Joplin, W. C. Handy, Irving Berlin, Fats Waller and others, and immerse yourself in the music with live piano performances of the tunes for which these artists are best remembered.



History of the Jekyll Island Club

The Jekyll Island Club was the most exclusive resort in America with members such as J. Pierpont Morgan and William Rockefeller. Discuss the role that the Jekyll Island Club played in the creation of the Federal Reserve Banking System and the first transcontinental telephone call. Learn also about the ecosystem of this coastal environment that drew the rich and famous, both during lectures in the classroom and on field trips outdoors, including beach walks and a visit to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.




Jekyll Island

One of Georgia’s southernmost barrier islands, Jekyll Island has a storied past. At the turn of the century, it hosted an exclusive club that attracted the likes of the Astors, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts. Much of that world is preserved in a historic district near the riverfront. Today, the island is popular for golfing, fishing and kayaking.

This program stays at the elegant and historic Jekyll Island Club Hotel, within the historic district of millionaire’s village; overlooks Intracoastal Waterway; half-mile from the Atlantic Ocean; two double beds, private bath, swimming pool.

Georgia Graves

Georgia Graves has developed and coordinates teacher training workshops on Georgia's sea turtles, shorebirds, marine mammals and coastal ecology for the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, one of 26 such reserves in North America. Georgia leads nature and history programs and works with Georgia's sea turtle conservation project.
 
Tex Wyndham

Tex is one of the country's best-known Dixieland jazz and ragtime musicians, having performed on the national festival and cruise circuit since 1968. Tex is a recognized authority on ragtime and traditional jazz and is a prolific author on the subjects. He performs as a ragtime soloist, band pianist and as cornetist and leader of The Rent Party Revellers, The Red Lion Jazz Band, and The MTB (Margery Thompson Birthday) Jazz Band. Tex has written a book on Dixieland music, and has written columns and ragtime and classic jazz reviews for numerous publications over the last 35 years, including The American Rag, The Mississippi Rag and the Rag Times. From 1966 to 1997, he had more published reviews of ragtime, Dixieland jazz and related music recordings than any other U.S.-based writer. He also has more than 30 recordings of ragtime and jazz music on the market.
 
Jenny Strauss

Jenny Strauss graduated with honors from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s in English, and minors in home furnishing and organ performance. After moving to the culturally rich Golden Isles of Georgia, she quickly developed a passion for learning about the area’s history, leading to a 20-year career as an instructor, presenter and storyteller. Jenny is the owner of History, Mystery, & More, Inc., and is a member of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society
 
Kathleen Lundahl

Kathleen Lundahl is a retired educator from New York with degrees from Hunter College and Columbia University. She has taught on the secondary level and on the college level as an adjunct professor at the State University of New York-Farmingdale campus and at the Brunswick campus of the University System of Georgia. Kathleen has taught a variety of Road Scholar programs, and enjoys meeting and sharing her knowledge with participants.

Driving Directions
  From Exit 29 on I-95 To reach the Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island, when traveling on I-95, take Exit 29 onto Highway 17/82 North for 6 miles to the Jekyll Island Causeway (State Road 520). Proceed on the Causeway East 6 miles to the Jekyll Island collection station ($6 park entry fee). Continue on the Causeway to the Loop. Take the first right on to Beachview Drive. Go down Beachview Drive and travel approximately 1 mile to hotel on left.
Elevation Note: Elevation is just above sea level.

Day 1: Registration/Welcome
(Sunday, January 27)
   
 Afternoon: Arrive at hotel for registration and room assignment.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Jekyll Island Club.
 Evening: Welcome, orientation and get acquainted.

Day 2: Ragtime/Early Tin Pan Alley/Dixieland/Jazz, and Jekyll History
(Monday, January 28)
   
 Breakfast: Hot breakfast bar at the hotel.
 Morning: Learn about ragtime, including its history and structure, and its different styles. Scott Joplin, Eubie Blake and other prominent ragtime composers will be covered, including complete live piano solo performances of important rags.
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Learn about the millionaires, once representing 1/6 of our nation's wealth, who used this area as a winter retreat. A guide will lead you through the Club and discuss the social history.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Jekyll Island Club.
 Evening: The instructor will talk about life in the colonies; what they wore, what they ate and their way of life. She will bring colonial clothing and dress some of the participants for a "look" at colonial dress.

Day 3: Ragtime Jazz, Ecology, Sheet Music
(Tuesday, January 29)
   
 Breakfast: Hot breakfast bar at the hotel.
 Morning: Begin with an introduction to blues music, its history and structure, including live piano performances of key blues compositions by W. C Handy and other blues pioneers. Continue through the origins of Tin Pan Alley, touching on its prominent composers and lyricists, such as Irving Berlin, and hear some of its most famous works, such as "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and " I Can't Give You Anything But Love (Baby)".
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: You will hear about the fascinating Ecology of one of Georgia's Barrier Island. Learn about the inhabitants that call this area home such as the Knobbed Whelk, the State Shell of Georgia and other interesting critters. You'll also hear about the sea turtles who come back year after year to use the beaches of Jekyll Island as a nesting ground.
 Dinner: Dinner at the Jekyll Island Club.
 Evening: See examples of sheet music cover art from the late 1800s to the late 1930s. Learn about some of the artists and several of the publishers. Find out how the sheet music publishing business expanded during the Tin Pan Alley period.

Day 4: Ragtime lecture, Free Afternoon and Evening
(Wednesday, January 30)
   
 Breakfast: Hot breakfast bar at the hotel.
 Morning: Continue Tin Pan Alley presentation, including live piano performances of selections by Jerome Kern ("They Didn't Believe Me""), Shelton Brooks ("Some Of These Days") and a special section on Walter Donaldson ""My Blue Heaven", "Yes, Sir! That's My Baby!" and many others). Learn why Tin Pan Alley died.
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Wednesday afternoon and evening is free to give participants a chance to visit St. Simons Island and enjoy the local cuisine. Dinner on your own.
 Evening: Free time for exploring on your own.

Day 5: Dixieland Jazz, Georgia Sea Turtle Excursion
(Thursday, January 31)
   
 Breakfast: Hot breakfast bar at the hotel.
 Morning: Explore Dixieland jazz via capsule biographies of some of the most influential Dixielanders, such as Bix Beiderbecke, Fats Waller, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Eddie Condon, James P. Johnson and Louis Armstrong including live piano performances of tunes for which they are best remembered. Say good-bye with a special wrapup section of the program.
 Lunch: Lunch
 Afternoon: Excursion to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Our ecology instructor will continue to amaze you with the many critters that call our area home. Marsh/Beach walk for a hands-on experience of Georgia's ecology.
 Dinner: Dinner ar the Jekyll Island Club.
 Evening: An entertaining program will be held.

Day 6: Program Wrap Up/Departures

  Jekyll Island, GA General Overview
Jekyll Island's Historic District has several speciality shops as well as the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, once the clubhouse for many of America's elite business men. Other areas of interest located near Jekyll Island are St. Simons Island, home to several historic places including Fort Frederica, Bloody Marsh Battle site, etc. There are also other interesting islands located near Jekyll Island including Sapelo Island where you will find a plantation once owned by R. J. Reynolds and Cumberland Island home to many wild horses. Other areas of interest near Jekyll Island include Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, an old rice plantation and Brunswick Georgia which has many historic buildings and landmarks as well as several antique shops. Jekyll Island is located approximately one hour south of Historic Savannah Georgia.
