Learn to express your ideas through the beauty of watercolor on the gem of the Golden Isles of Georgia — Jekyll Island. Build a solid foundation of basic skills and learn the unique properties of watercolor: pigments, color mixing, brush control, glazing and laying washes. Through natural progression, study the shape, color, form and composition of various subject matter; your choice of landscape, flowers, people, or buildings. Be inspired on this tranquil island and paint your masterpiece.

Participants will stay at a brand-new beachfront hotel adjacent to the widest and most pristine beach on Jekyll Island. Stroll through a rare maritime forest over protected sand dunes. The hotel is just minutes away from the shops, attractions of Jekyll Island’s historic district, and the golf/tennis center.



10-19-2014

This program date stays at the elegant and historic Jekyll Island Club Hotel—an elegant and historic resort hotel within the historic district of millionaire’s village; overlooks Intracoastal Waterway; half-mile from the Atlantic Ocean; two double beds, private bath, swimming pool.



3-8-2015

This program date will lodge at a newly refurbished oceanfront hotel. Along with an oceanside pool, full-service restaurant and fitness center, the facility also features free high-speed internet.

Jekyll Island

One of Georgia’s southernmost barrier islands, Jekyll Island has a storied past. At the turn of the century, it hosted an exclusive club that attracted the likes of the Astors, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts. Much of that world is preserved in a historic district near the riverfront. Today, the island is popular for golfing, fishing and kayaking.

Majid Ejlali

Majid Ejlali's first painting foray was in oils, leading him to study art at the University of South Carolina. He later earned a degree in fine arts from East Carolina University in painting and graphic design. Majid's graduate studies include advanced degrees from East Tennessee State University, and post-graduate studies in painting from the University of Georgia. His work has been exhibited throughout the Southeast, and has earned numerous awards.

Program begins with Road Scholar check-in at 4:00 p.m. Hotel check-in time is also 4:00 p.m. You will be staying at Hampton Inn & Suites that night.
  End of Program:
Road Scholar program ends by 10:00 a.m. Hotel check-out time is 11:00 a.m. You will be staying at Hampton Inn & Suites the night before.
  Required documents:
The Road Scholar Health & Safety Form is required. Valid photo ID such as driver's license. You will be sent a Road Scholar Health and Safety form prior to the program start date. This form is required and must be completed and returned to the address shown on the document prior to your attendance in the program. Road Scholar Health & Safety Information form. Please send directly to the Program Coordinator no later than 3 weeks prior to the program.

Parking is free of charge. There is a $6 entry fee each time you come onto the island. If you stay a week, you may get a discounted pass for coming and going.

Driving Directions
  From Exit 29 on I-95 To reach the Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island, when traveling on I-95, take Exit 29 onto Highway 17/82 North for 6 miles to the Jekyll Island Causeway (State Road 520). Proceed on the Causeway East 6 miles to the Jekyll Island collection station ($6 park entry fee). Continue on the Causeway to the Loop. Take the first right on to Beachview Drive. Go down Beachview Drive and travel approximately 1 mile to hotel on left.
Elevation Note: Elevation is just above sea level.

Equipment Requirements: Bring some of your favorite paint brushes and paint.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Registration/Orientation
(Sunday, November 3)

Note: Participants will be getting on & off the hotel shuttle to be transported to the Morgan Center.



   
 Afternoon: Arrive on Jekyll Island, GA and check into the Hampton Inn & Suites. Also, check in with the Road Scholar facilitator and you'll receive a program packet containing your name tag, most up-to-date schedule, and other helpful information.
 Dinner: Dinner will be at the Morgan Center located on the grounds of the historic Jekyll Island Club. The Club Hotel is Jekyll Island's only four-star resort and National Historic Landmark. Enjoy elegant surroundings and simple pleasures. Its impressive members included such luminaries as J.P. Morgan, William Rockefeller, Vincent Astor, Joseph Pulitzer, William K. Vanderbilt, and other recognizable names on the roster were Macy, Goodyear and Gould.
 Evening: During orientation we will discuss program details and activities. We’ll give you a little overview of what you can expect over the next few days.

Day 2: Watercolor Instruction and Painting
(Monday, November 4)

Note: Participants will be getting on & off the hotel shuttle to be transported to the Morgan Center.



   
 Breakfast: Choose from a variety of delicious breakfast items at the Hampton Inn’s Hot Breakfast Bar, including: freshly made waffles, hearty oatmeal with toppings, and enjoy all the juice or coffee you can drink. Muffins, Danish, bagels, yogurt and fresh fruit are always available. Seasonal items may vary from day to day.
 Morning: We begin with an exercise designed to get you painting. Elements of composition, masking, mixing and applying color will be discussed and demonstrated. You will begin working on your first painting using this information.
 Lunch: A delightful lunch will be served.
 Afternoon: Supervised painting. Stretch additional paper for Monday evening.
 Dinner: A delicious dinner will be served.
 Evening: Finish Monday’s painting. Open studio practice. Stretch ¼ sheet of paper for Tuesday morning and afternoon exercises.

Day 3: Continue learning new Watercolor skills
(Tuesday, November 5)

Note: Participants will be getting on & off the hotel shuttle to be transported to the Morgan Center.



   
 Breakfast: Choose from a variety of delicious breakfast items at the Hampton Inn’s Hot Breakfast Bar, including: freshly made waffles, hearty oatmeal with toppings, and enjoy all the juice or coffee you can drink. Muffins, Danish, bagels, yogurt and fresh fruit are always available. Seasonal items may vary from day to day.
 Morning: Demonstration of additional watercolor techniques, and land/seascape elements such as sky, water, trees, marsh grasses, sea oats. Instructor will share tips and techniques learned during his 45 years as an artist. Practice the elements, and begin small paintings. Stretch ¼ sheet paper if needed for the afternoon session.
 Lunch: A delightful lunch will be served.
 Afternoon: Complete a fun exercise designed to enhance your creativity and give an open, loose feeling to your work. Continue work on your small paintings.
 Dinner: A delicious dinner will be served.
 Evening: Open Studio.Complete small paintings. Stretch ¼ sheet of paper for Wednesday morning.

Day 4: Free afternoon and evening.
(Wednesday, November 6)

Note: Participants will be getting on & off the hotel shuttle to be transported to the Morgan Center.



   
 Breakfast: Choose from a variety of delicious breakfast items at the Hampton Inn’s Hot Breakfast Bar, including: freshly made waffles, hearty oatmeal with toppings, and enjoy all the juice or coffee you can drink. Muffins, Danish, bagels, yogurt and fresh fruit are always available. Seasonal items may vary from day to day.
 Morning: ‘Follow the leader’ in a step by step exercise using the elements to create an effective composition. Complete the painting. Stretch ¼ sheet of paper for tomorrow’s final painting.
 Lunch: A delightful lunch will be served.
 Afternoon: Free time for exploring on your own for the many additional photo opportunities Jekyll Island and neighboring Islands have to offer.
 Evening: Wednesday evening is free to give participants a chance to visit Jekyll Historic District or St. Simons Island and enjoy the local cuisine. Dinner on your own.
 Evening: Free time for exploring on your own.

Day 5: Celebrate with an Art Show!
(Thursday, November 7)

Note: Participants will be getting on & off the hotel shuttle to be transported to the Morgan Center.



   
 Breakfast: Choose from a variety of delicious breakfast items at the Hampton Inn’s Hot Breakfast Bar, including: freshly made waffles, hearty oatmeal with toppings, and enjoy all the juice or coffee you can drink. Muffins, Danish, bagels, yogurt and fresh fruit are always available. Seasonal items may vary from day to day.
 Morning: Choose from instructor’s works or bring your own photo, card or other ideas to use as the subject for your final painting. Create your composition, plan your colors and begin your painting.
 Lunch: A delightful lunch will be served.
 Afternoon: Continue working on your painting. Prepare for the evening Art Show.
 Dinner: A delicious dinner will be served.
 Evening: Celebrate with an art show to showcase all of your hard work from throughout the week. This session is packed with learning opportunities.

Day 6: Watercolor Wrap-up and fond farewells
(Friday, November 8)

Muffins, Danish, bagels, yogurt and fresh fruit are always available. Seasonal items may vary from day to day.
 Morning: Wrap-up and informal discussion of the work created this week. The program concludes with this wrap-up session. We should be all finished by about 10 a.m. Check-out from the hotel is at 11 a.m. Independent departures will follow. Jekyll Island's Historic District has several speciality shops as well as the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, once the clubhouse for many of America's elite business men. Other areas of interest located near Jekyll Island are St. Simons Island, home to several historic places including Fort Frederica, Bloody Marsh Battle site, etc. There are also other interesting islands located near Jekyll Island including Sapelo Island where you will find a plantation once owned by R. J. Reynolds and Cumberland Island home to many wild horses. Other areas of interest near Jekyll Island include Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation, an old rice plantation and Brunswick Georgia which has many historic buildings and landmarks as well as several antique shops. Jekyll Island is located approximately one hour south of Historic Savannah Georgia.
