Pedal through the wild gems of Pennsylvania and New Jersey on this picturesque bicycling adventure. Bicycle a variety of trails with a former National Park Service Ranger who illuminates the area’s natural and cultural highlights. During the week, instructors review basic bike maintenance and the creation of the National Recreation Area and the Rails-to-Trails program.

Shawnee on Delaware

This quaint, historic village is situated amid the sylvan beauty of Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area at the foothills of the Pocono Mountains in eastern Pennsylvania, just 75 miles from New York City.
Accommodations
The Historic Shawnee Inn overlooks the National Scenic and Recreational Delaware River and has an indoor pool, hot tub, and full service spa.

Cindy Miano
Cindy Miano retired in 2004 from a career in elementary education where she taught fourth grade and served as a language Arts chairperson. In addition to managing Shawnee Institute Road Scholar programs, Cindy is a personal trainer and life coach. She practices Pilates, yoga and various strength training programs, and helps to promote wellness plans for individuals while helping them to achieve overall good health.
 
Leslie Underhill
An avid student of yoga for the last seven years, Leslie Underhill has combined her love of the discipline with her enthusiasm for teaching. In 2004, she opened the studio Yogannamaste, and recently opened a bed and breakfast where she teaches yoga to guests. In addition to taking her classes to businesses and schools in the area, Leslie also teaches yoga to cancer survivors at the Pocono Medical Center. She is certified in spanda yoga and is classified as an ERYT 200.
 
Scott Slingerland
Scott Slingerland has raced mountain bikes for 15 years, including a four-day race across Costa Rica, and several 24-hour mountain bike races. Scott is a cycling instructor and teaches bicycle repair and riding skills. For training, he uses his bicycle for daily transportation to meetings, shopping and to visit family. Scott has cycled in Italy, India, Sri Lanka and China, and finds that the usage of bicycles in these countries is “eye opening.”
 
Harold Jacobs
At age 55, Harold Jacobs rode his bike across the United States. A retired mathematics researcher and professor, he currently spends considerable time volunteering in a variety of endeavors. As a volunteer with the Millbrook Village Society, Harold maintains and interprets an 1860’s era historic village in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. He also works with Habitat for Humanity in creating homes for deserving people, and tutors college students at East Stroudsburg University.
 
Mike Free
Mike Free is a certified bicycle instructor through the League America Bicyclists. He has done numerous multi-day different state rides such as GOBA and RAGBRAI, and has mountain biked in numerous states, including an eight day, 250 mile ride through Canyonlands, Utah. Mike also is a rafter and kayaker, and has rafted numerous rivers in the east and southwest, including the Colorado. He has been an excursion leader on the Lehigh and Cheat River. Mike currently works part time as a bicycle public safety officer at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.

Bus stop is located at the Express Bus Stop at each airline terminal. Departure every 20-30 minutes. At the Port Authority bus terminal, take the Martz Trailways bus to Delaware Water Gap.
 
Driving Directions
  From the East: I-80 West Take PA Exit 310, Delaware Water Gap (immediately after toll bridge, first exit in PA). Follow signs for Delaware Water Gap. At the TRAFFIC LIGHT, proceed straight through on River Road. Go under overpass and over railroad tracks. At stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road for approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  From the North: I-84 West Take Exit 46, Milford. Turn left toward Milford at the stop. At the traffic light in Milford, go straight through and on to US Route 209 S. Follow 209 South for about 25 miles. Just past the traffic light at the elementary school, make a LEFT turn on Hollow Road. Go 4.0 miles (pass Shawnee Mountain) until Hollow Road intersects with River Road at the Shawnee Playhouse. Turn RIGHT onto River Road. The entrance to Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is 1/4 mile on your LEFT.
  From the South: I-95 North I-95 N TO I-476 N. (I-76 N, then I-476 N if coming from Philadelphia Airport). On I-476 N go to US-22 E, to US-33 N, then I-80 E to PA Exit 310, Delaware Water Gap. Turn LEFT at the TRAFFIC LIGHT on River Road. Go under the overpass, and over the railroad tracks. At the stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort will be on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  From the West: I-80 East Take I-80 E to exit 310, Delaware Water Gap. Make a LEFT at the TRAFFIC LIGHT on River Road. Go under overpass and over railroad tracks. At stop sign proceed to the RIGHT. Stay on River Road for approximately 1.5 miles. The entrance to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is on the RIGHT at the bottom of the hill.
  Note for all: Once you are at the entrance to the Resort, pass the gate house and continue straight over the bridge. The main parking lot will be on your left. The front entrance of the Inn faces the river, so drive around to th entrance portico if ou need help with your luggage.
Equipment Requirements: A sturdy bicycle in good operating condition, with wide tires suitable for off-road use, and a bike helmet. For those who don't wish to bring their own, we will provide rental bikes and helmets at an additional cost of $25/day. The bikes that we provide are designed for the older rider, with a larger, more padded seat, and designed for a more comfortable, upright riding position. Also required: a day pack, fanny pack, or bike bag, rain gear, sunglasses, insect repellent, sunscreen.

Daily Schedule

Day 1: Check-in, registration and orientation
(Sunday, September 15)
   
 Afternoon: An Road Scholar registration desk will be set up near the front desk in the lobby of the hotel. A welcome reception and orientation will be held before dinner.
 Dinner: Our dinners at the Shawnee Inn are buffet style, and include: rolls & butter, two salads, two entrées (one of which is vegetarian), steamed vegetables, rice or potatoes, fresh fruit, dessert, iced tea and coffee. Be careful. The food is good, and it's easy to put on a pound or two while you're here.
 Evening: After dinner, we'll have a biking safety & group riding rules discussion, by our group leader.

Day 2: Classroom Instruction - Ride in Cherry Valley - Talk: Creation of the National Recreation Area
(Monday, September 16)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy a variety of hot or cold breakfast options, including omlettes-to-order at the Shawnee Inn River Room.
 Morning: Join the ride guide for a short course in bicycle maintenance. Learn how to troubleshoot and repair typical problems that may occur during the ride.
 Lunch: Before we depart for our ride, we'll make our own lunch-to-go from a variety of breads, meats, cheeses, and condiments, plus snack, fruit, cookies, juice and water.
 Afternoon: This day's ride will be 14 miles on the Cherry Valley Roads.
 Dinner: Dinner will be at the Shawnee Inn.
 Evening: This evening's program will be a presentation by a National Park Service Ranger about the controversial Tock's Island Dam project, and the creation of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Day 3: Ride the Old Mine Road in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area - Yoga class - Concert
(Tuesday, September 17)
   
 Breakfast: Start the day with a River Room buffet breakfast.
 Morning: Today we ride 22 miles on the Old Mine Road in NJ. This ride is on a rural road, part paved, and part compacted gravel. There are moderate uphill sections. A National Park Service Ranger will accompany us, and acquaint us with the significant historic buildings along the way.
 Lunch: We will make our own lunches at the Inn before we leave. A variety of breads, cheeses, meats, condiments, fruit, snacks and drinks will be available to choose from.
 Afternoon: After we finish the ride, we will return to the Inn for a yoga stretching class.
 Dinner: Dinner will be at the Shawnee Inn.
 Evening: Evening program will be a free concert on the lawn at the Inn.

Day 4: Ride the Paulinskill Valley Trail in NJ - Lunch is on your own - Free time afternoon - Dinner at the Inn - Free evening
(Wednesday, September 18)
   
 Breakfast: Healthy breakfast buffet at the River Room.
 Morning: Today's ride is on the Paulinskill Valley Trail in the Kittatinny State Park in NJ. This Rail-Trail ride is 16 miles, with negligible grades, and a nice mix of single track and full width trails.
 Lunch: Lunch is on your own today so that participants have the opportunity to enjoy lunch at any of the nearby restaurants.
 Afternoon: Participants can enjoy any of the free amenities that the Inn has to offer; take a hike on a nearby trail; take a canoe or kayak trip on the Delaware River or play a round of golf (each at additional cost); or visit any of the area's other attactions.
 Dinner: Dinner will be at the Inn.
 Evening: Relax and enjoy any of the Inn's many free amenities.

Day 5: Ride the Lehigh Gorge Trail in PA - Visit historic Jim Thorpe - Dinner at the Gem & Keystone Tavern
(Thursday, September 19)
   
 Breakfast: Greet the day at at the River Room breakfast buffet.
 Morning: Today's ride will take us to the Lehigh Gorge State Park, one of the 10-best rides in PA. The ride is 22 miles on a smooth rail bed with gentle grades.
 Lunch: We will make our own lunch at the Inn and eat along the trail.
 Afternoon: After the ride, we'll visit the historic town of Jim Thorpe before we return to the Inn.
 Dinner: Our Farewell Dinner will be at the Gem & Keystone Tavern, a short walk from the Inn. The tavern features locally grown food, plus an assortment of beer brewed right here at our own ShawneeCraft brewery.

Day 6: Program wrap-up and check-out
