Less than 70 miles from one another, Santa Fe and Taos are the jewel cities of northern New Mexico; seemingly enchanted places cast against the backdrop of the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Adobe pueblos built by ancestral peoples still stand, elegant Spanish colonial plazas serve as meeting places as they have for four centuries and beautiful museums display the work of artist-pilgrims who gathered here to find inspiration in the land. Examine Santa Fe and Taos through the eyes of those who have called them home and discover not only what they share, but also what sets each apart.

Santa Fe

A cosmopolitan city famous for its world-renowned opera, chamber and choral music and for its art and artists, Santa Fe is situated at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Nearby, eight historic, continuously occupied pueblos and small Hispanic villages divulge a heritage that is impeccably preserved in this multi-cultural state capital.

Ronald Roybal
Ronald Roybal is a professional musician who performs in the New Mexico area. A descendant of Spanish Colonial and Pueblo (Tewa) peoples, he has been nominated for four Native American Music Awards for his flute and Spanish guitar recordings. Ronald has been featured twice on NPR’s “Performance Today” program and has performed live at concert venues such as the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and the Colorado Music Festival. He holds bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and psychology.
 
Mark Utgaard
A resident of New Mexico for more than 40 years, Mark Utgaard enjoys sharing his love for the state’s culture and history with others. He is a former journalist and editor, and for 20 years, owned an importing business that offered traditional and contemporary handcrafts from Colombia for wholesale in North America, Asia and the Caribbean. During the 1960s and 1970s, Mark traveled to Europe several times as a member of youth orchestras, and later worked as a travel manager for other youth choirs and orchestras journeying to Europe. He has been a Road Scholar group leader and instructor for six years. In his free time, Mark likes to make furniture from old wood and he is learning to play the button accordion.
 
Sharon Franco
Sharon Franco holds a master’s in English literature from the University of Illinois, as well as a literary translator's diploma from El Colegio de Mexico in Mexico City. She teaches literature and writing at the University of New Mexico and Santa Fe Preparatory School, public speaking at Santa Fe Community College, and Spanish language and literature privately. She has translated books of fiction to and from Spanish. In Mexico, she was a translator of films, fiction and scholarly publications.
 
Connie Eichstaedt
Connie Eichstaedt, a native New Mexican, built her adobe home by hand more than 25 years ago in Apache Canyon on the southern side of Santa Fe National Forest. A passionate defender of New Mexico’s natural resources, Connie is the executive director of Southwest Seminars, an educational nonprofit that specializes in developing programs in Southwest Studies. She is an enthusiastic and colorful storyteller.
 
Mireya Cirici
Mireya Cirici is a superb painter and photographer with a bachelor’s in art history from the University of Barcelona in Spain and a master’s in cultural history from the University of California, San Diego, and studies in art and painting in La Sorbonne in Paris. A Santa Fe resident since 1995, Mireya has taught painting, art history and art appreciation in universities, museums and as an artist-in-residence. She is preparing a painting exhibit and photographic portrait of Santa Fe.

If you choose to fly out of the Santa Fe Airport, the Courtyard by Marriott has a free shuttle van that will take you from the hotel and transport you to the airport. Santa Fe has a small regional airport with limited commuter flights in and out daily. If you choose to fly into the Santa Fe Airport, the Courtyard by Marriott has a free shuttle van that will pick you up and transport you to the hotel. Call a few days in advance to give them your estimated arrival time, then call upon arrival so the service can come pick you up.
 
Driving Directions
  Albuquerque International Sunport Exit the airport west onto Sunport Boulevard, which will take you to Interstate 25.

Go north on I-25 to Santa Fe exit 278, Cerrillos Road (approximately 55-60 miles).

Travel about three miles into Santa Fe; the Courtyard by Marriott is located at 3347 Cerrillos Road on the left just before the intersection of Cerrillos Road and Richards Avenue. If you pass an IHOP and a McDonalds on your left, you've gone too far!
  I-25 from the north or south If approaching Santa Fe from the north (Las Vegas, NV) or the south (Albuquerque) on I-25: Proceed to Santa Fe Exit 278, Cerrillos Road. Day 1: Arrive in Santa Fe, Introductions, Orientation
(Sunday, February 3)
   
 Arrive To: Registration with group leader in hotel lobby between 4:00 and 5:30 PM.

You may check into your room at the hotel anytime after 3:00 pm

 Dinner: Dinner in hotel dining room from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM
 Evening: Program orientation and introductions in hotel meeting room from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Day 2: Morning classes on Southwest literature, Santa Fe Field Trip
(Monday, February 4)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room from 7:00-8:00 am
 Morning: Enjoy literature of the Southwest and history from 8:00 AM until 12:00 PM. The southwest literature instructor is very well versed in the authors with whom you should become acquainted. You'll explore examples of writings of many; Native American, Hispanic, Anglo and some from other cultures as well.
 Lunch: Lunch at the hotel
 Afternoon: Bus departs at 1:30 PM for a guided exploration of Santa Fe, "The City Different," the Plaza, the New Mexico State Capitol and other selected sites. You'll drive through a lot of Santa Fe, including the historic downtown area as well as more modern parts of the city.

Part of the exploration will include some walking; the rest will be via bus.

You'll be able to relate some of the art, architecture and history information you studied in the morning to what you see in the afternoon.

Bus returns to the hotel by 5:00 PM.

 Dinner: Dinner at in the hotel dining area from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
 Evening: FREE EVENING or optional video in hotel meeting room

Day 3: Art and Architecture of Northern New Mexico/Santa Clara Pueblo and the village of Chimayo/Dinner at Rancho de Chimayo
(Tuesday, February 5)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room from 7:00-8:00 AM.
 Morning: Enjoy classes from 8:30 AM until 12:00 PM, with hourly breaks, on art and architecture of northern New Mexico and the area's history. From 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, enjoy a class presented by a Santa Fe woman who built her own adobe house - "Connie's Casa." You'll gain an even greater understanding of the history of the area, which will prepare you for the rest of the program week. Knowing the historical perspective will separate you from New Mexico tourists who won't have the background you will gain. Your appreciation for the area and all that makes it special will be enhanced by your new-found knowledge.
 Lunch: Lunch in the hotel dining area from 12:00 - 12:45 PM.
 Afternoon: Board the bus at 12:45 PM for a scenic trip to Santa Clara Pueblo visit set for 1:45 PM), where you'll visit with Paul Speckled Rock in his shop.

Santa Clara Pueblo is one of the friendliest pueblos of northern New Mexico, welcoming visitors. The pueblo is famous for its blackware and redware pottery. Mr. Speckled Rock and his wife, Rosalda, offer a talk about how the pottery is made at Santa Clara, and they'll talk about the families who are best known for their pottery. Continue on to the Northern New Mexico village of Chimayó, which is much as it has been over the last two hundred years. You'll visit the "Lourdes of Northern New Mexico," the Santuario de Chimayó, famous for the healing earth found inside, and a nearby weaving center. Chimayo has several families who have been known for their beautiful weaving for many, many years. The Hispanic weavings are different from those of Native American origin, and it's interesting to see all of the things that can be made from the beautiful naturally dyed wool that is used. You'll see traditional rugs, but also beautiful vests and jackets, placemats, handbags, and more.

Board the bus at 4:45 PM to go to dinner

 Dinner: At 5:00 PM, you'll arrive at Rancho de Chimayó for your evening meal.

Rancho de Chimayó has been owned and operated for many years by a family from Chimayó, and is one of the best-known restaurants in the northern New Mexico area. There are Mexican restaurants all over the United States and also all over New Mexico. We know that all of them are different. Depending on the area of the state, the influences in the cuisine vary tremendously. There are some dishes prepared in the northern part of the state that many people in the southern part never heard of. It's fun to discover the different preparation methods and recipes. Rancho de Chimayo is one of the most popular restaurants in the area, located in an old adobe hacienda. We think it will be a treat for you to visit this lovely dining establishment. The bus returns to Santa Fe about 7:30 PM.

Day 4: LiteratureClasses/O'Keeffe Museum/Free Afternoon/Dinner on your own/Evening
(Wednesday, February 6)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room from 7:00 AM until 8:00 AM
 Morning: From 8:30 AM until 10:45 AM, you'll have Southwest Literature classes followed by a trip to downtown Santa Fe, where you'll visit the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum at 11:15 am. The O'Keeffe Museum is not a large museum, but it is one of the primary destinations for people who visit Santa Fe. Ms. O'Keeffe's paintings, as well as those of some other artists, are featured there. Bus departs at 12:15 for lunch destination.
 Lunch: Lunch at the Blue Corn Cafe on Water Street at 12:30.
 Afternoon: FREE AFTERNOON - Bus departs from downtown for those who would like to return to the hotel, otherwise you'll have plenty of time to explore Santa Fe on your own; public buses come by the hotel every half-hour, going to the downtown area and to other places; just riding on the buses for an hour or two can give you a broader perspective of what the city is all about
 Dinner: Dinner is on your own tonight. Your group leader can offer suggestions for restaurants near the hotel and in the downtown area.
 Evening: Free evening

Day 5: Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, NM State Museums/Native American Music Presentation
(Thursday, February 7)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room.
 Morning: Morning classes from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Art and Architecture of Northern New Mexico, and Spanish Conquerors to the Contemporary City.
 Lunch: Lunch in the hotel dining area from 12:00 - 1:00 pm.
 Afternoon: The bus will depart at 1:45 for Museum Hill where you'll explore Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and the Museum of International Folk Art. The Museum of Indian Art and Culture is one of the State of New Mexico museums, and features pottery, jewelry, sculpture, baskets, and other objects made by Native Americans from all over the United States. Most of the work is from the Southwest. It's a beautiful museum on Museum Hill, and we think you'll enjoy going there for a self-guided tour. We don't usually utilize the docents, as most people in groups seem to prefer looking around at their own pace. There is a brochure available that explains all of the exhibits. The bus departs at 4:45 PM to return to the hotel about 5:00 PM.
 Dinner: Dinner at the hotel
 Evening: Special presentation from 7:00-8:00 pm by Ronald Roybal, an award-winning Native American flutist, guitarist, and singer. He'll tell you about his background, his music (he's a composer as well as an historian of Native American music) and his life as a musician.

Day 6: Full Day Trip to Taos
(Friday, February 8)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel dining room from 7:00 to 7:45 AM.

Pick up boxed lunches in lobby before departing for Taos.

 Morning: Bus departs at 7:45 AM for a trip to Taos. The bus will stop at the Rio Grande gorge Bridge and the Millicent Rogers Museum.
 Lunch: Boxed lunch from hotel can be eaten on the bus or on Taos Plaza.
 Afternoon: If Taos Pueblo is open (it sometimes closes unexpectedly for tribal meetings, funerals, holy days, etc.) we'll take you there for a visit. We will also take you to the historic Taos Plaza, fascinating Bent Street and other sites. You'll visit the Ernest Blumenschein Museum, Martinez Hacienda, and the San Francisco de Asis Church in Ranchos de Taos (depicted by many famous artists). After visiting the church, bus will return to Santa Fe, arriving at the hotel by 5:45 PM.
 Dinner: Dinner in the hotel dining area at 6:30 PM, followed by closing comments.

Day 7: Breakfast and Departure

 Depart From: Independent departures from the hotel. Checkout time is by 11:00 am.
