Immerse yourself in the birding oasis of Delaware Bay shores, marshes and coastal woodlands — a rich habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, warblers and finches. Experience such great birding sites as Bombay Hook and Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuges, and Cape Henlopen State Park. Led by experts who have lived and birded the area for more than 25 years, this adventure is designed for beginning and experienced birders, and typically, well over 100 species of birds are observed.




Highlights

• On a mile-long hike along Gordon's Pond that begins and ends at the ocean, get arm's-length views of Great-blue herons, plovers and more than a dozen species of shorebirds.
• Explore wooded swamps looking for Prothonotary Warblers and the elusive Pileated Woodpecker.
• Experience historic Cape Henlopen, the direct flight path of thousands of raptors migrating along the coast.

Long ago, Native Americans came here during the summer for cool breezes and abundant seafood. Today, visitors from the D.C. area and beyond flock to Rehoboth Beach -- established as a seaside resort in 1891 -- to enjoy those same features, and to relax on sandy beaches and in beachfront cafes.

Day 2: Bombay Hook Refuge/Mispillion - Delaware Bay/Birds of Cape Henlopen
(Tuesday, April 30)
   
 Breakfast: Dining Room
 Morning: Birding field trip with Field Naturalists to Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Since 1937, Bombay Hook has hosted hundreds of thousands of migrating ducks, geese, shorebirds and other neotropical songbirds.
 Lunch: Picnic Lunch
 Afternoon: Lecture and Hike with Naturalist to visit Mispillion Light near Milford, DE.
 Dinner: Dining Room
 Evening: Presentation/Discussion on the Birds of Cape Henlopen

Day 3: Birding on the Water!/Picnic/Marsh Bird Ecology
(Wednesday, May 1)
   
 Breakfast: Dining Room
 Morning: Enjoy beautiful view, marshes, birds - by pontoon boat in Trap Pond State Park - Delaware's Cypress Swamp! This park retains a part of the swamp's original beauty and mystery, and features the northernmost natural stand of baldcypress trees in the U.S.
 Lunch: Picnic lunch
 Afternoon: Hiking trails at Trap Pond surround the pond and hikers may spot a Great Blue Heron, owls, hummingbirds, and more.
 Dinner: Dining Room
 Evening: Slides, discussion, great interaction with Naturalist

Day 4: Prime Hook Refuge/Cape Henlopen/Bird lists
(Thursday, May 2)
   
 Breakfast: Dining Room
 Morning: Birding field trip to Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, which spans approx. 10,000 acres along the western Delaware Bay. The marshes of the refuge provide ideal habitat for thousands of migrating ducks, geese and shorebirds. Also is home to woodland and grassland birds, amphibians and mammals.
 Lunch: Picnic Lunch
 Afternoon: Cape Henlopen State Park is Delaware's largest state park along the Atlantic Ocean. It is the prime location along the eastern flyway. Numerous shorebirds, as well as migrating songbirds and raptors are seen.
 Dinner: Dining Room
 Evening: Birding Wrap-up with our Naturalists! Birding lists will be handed out.

Day 5: Check out at 11:00 a.m./Gordon's Pond
(Friday, May 3)
   
 Breakfast: Dining Room
 Morning: Bird walk at Gordon's Pond near Rehoboth Beach. This walk weaves around a mile-long tidal pond and ends at the ocean, offering arm's-length views of more than a dozen species of shorebirds. You might also see blue herons, plovers, and other shorebirds. Program ends 11:00 a.m.
