Sounds of the 1930s and 1940s

Examine the evolution of sounds of this era with an overview of ballrooms, theaters and clubs made famous by the Big Bands. Discuss leaders, arrangers, vocalists and soloists who found fame and fortune through this period of musical ingenuity.




Rehoboth Beach

Long ago, Native Americans came here during the summer for cool breezes and abundant seafood. Today, visitors from the D.C. area and beyond flock to Rehoboth Beach -- established as a seaside resort in 1891 -- to enjoy those same features, and to relax on sandy beaches and in beachfront cafes.

Lee Mussoff
A professor of English, drama and speech, Lee Mussoff is a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., who has taught at the University of Pittsburgh, Wilmington College and for the Academy of Lifelong Learning. In addition to teaching, Lee has pursued acting, directing and writing in her professional career. She holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
 
Richard Smolens
Since retiring from Hunter College in 1991, Dr. Richard Smolens has combined his two great loves — teaching and singing — by lecturing and performing nationwide, and by introducing jazz to schoolchildren in Venice, Fla. He interprets songs that were created during the first half of the American 20th century, most notably the works of the Gershwin brothers, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and more. Based in West Grove, Pa., Richard spends the winter months singing and teaching in Georgia and Florida.

 Evening: Introduction to Humor with Mr Stan Raskin--comedic instructor for over 21 years.

Day 2: Love that Music!/Swing That Tune!/Entertainment

 Morning: Enjoy vintage recordings, film clips with live vocal demos!

 Afternoon: Humor with Stan - Comedy stand up routine.
