Delve into the many contributions of South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. Study the history, hear many stories and see the sights in the historical program. Gain a new understanding of both Francis Marion and Thomas Sumter.
History Of The Santee Lakes: One Of Man's Largest
History of the Jocassee Lake – Lake Jocassee is tucked in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is one of the most scenic lakes in the country with a backdrop of several waterfalls that pour into the lake.
Pickens
Founded in 1868 by Scottish-Irish settlers and traders who lived among the native Cherokee, Pickens today is a friendly, small town at the foothills of the Appalachians where residents and visitors enjoy abundant hiking trails, gorgeous vistas and mountain lakes.

The Youth Learning Institute provides the shuttle. We meet you in baggage claim with a sign that bears your name. Please contact coordinator 2 weeks in advance of your arrival. We need to know your arrival time and airlines. Payment is made on Monday morning. Checks and credit cards accepted. NO Cash. We take you back to the airport at your convenience.

Take Highway 124 towards Clemson University; take the 178 exit (Highway 178) and proceed until the Pickens County Courthouse; At the traffic light, turn left onto Highway 183. The road will reduce to 2 lanes at the Mobil Gas station. Turn right immediately after the Mobil Gas Station onto Shady Grove Road. Turn left onto Concord Church Road. The Youth Learning Institute will be on your left.

In the morning, a historian will present a lecture which will provide an excellent overview on the Revolutionary War in the South. He will guide us in the afternoon on a field trip to local battlefields.

Field trip to Cowpens National Battlefield - Coming on heels of a Patriot victory at Kings Mountain, Cowpens National Battlefield commemorates a decisive Patriot defeat of better-trained British forces under Lord Cornwallis.

Field trip to Duke Power's World of Energy to learn why the lakes were created.

Enjoy a relaxing lunch in the dinning room

After a relaxing afternoon, come and meet the fellow participants for dinner in the dinning room
Evening:
Hear about the creation of the lake system and the efforts to conserve the surrounding land. An outstanding presentation will be provided by a gentleman employed by the Department of Natural Resources.

An overview of southern culture will be presented by visiting Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center. Founded in 1966, Foxfire's learner-centered, community-based educational approach is advocated through this demonstration site.

Morning - Field trip to The Pickens County Museum of Art and History which is in the old Pickens County "Gaol" (jail). This is a wonderful example of turn-of-the-century architecture, constructed of hand-rolled brick and copper-colored tin roof.

A quick trip to the Pickens County Museum and Heritage Center will conclude the week up.
