Join author, scholar, folklorist and musician Dr. Mick Moloney on a journey that will transport your heart and soul to the Emerald Isle. Hear myths and tales of leprechauns, magical faeries and heroic kings and queens that were told around the ancient fires, and discuss Celtic culture, the Gaelic Order, Brehon Law, Christianity and the early Irish emigration to the United States. Each night, enjoy Irish music and Irish-American favorites with Dr. Moloney and friends.




Highlights

• Discuss the many forms of Irish verbal art, drawing on mythology, legends, riddles, proverbs and tales of folk heroes like Finn Mac Chumhail.
• Delve into complex issues of Irish nationalism and the struggle for independence, and learn songs of resistance in Northern Ireland as well as modern songs of reconciliation and peace.
• Explore the impact of Ireland on the evolution of Old Time Music and Bluegrass and trace the rise of the Irish in vaudeville and on the big screen.

Ripley

Nestled in the Appalachian foothills of the Ohio River Valley in the western part of the state, the county seat of Ripley features a historic downtown and theater and easy access to nearby areas of natural beauty, abundant wildlife and hiking trails.

Mick Moloney

Dr. Mick Moloney — folklorist, professional musician, and radio and television personality — was awarded the National Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1999. He is the author of “Far From the Shamrock Shore: The Story of Irish American History Through Song.” He has recorded and produced over 50 albums of traditional music, has hosted three folk music programs on America Public Television, and currently teaches at New York University in the Irish studies program.

Driving Directions
  If you are driving from the east. Cedar Lakes Crafts Center is located about three miles off Interstate-77 near Ripley, WV, south of Parkersburg, WV and north of Charleston, WV. If you are traveling from the east, consider Interstate-68 and Route 40 through Cumberland, MD to Morgantown, WV, south on Interstate-79 to Clarksburg, west on Route 50 to Parkersburg, and south on Interstate-77 to Ripley. Exit Interstate at Exit 132, at bottom of exit ramp, make a left on Route 21 north, go under interstate, make first right onto Cedar Lakes Drive, Cedar Lakes Conference Center will be 3 1/2 miles on right. Many of the by-ways off the interstate are quite scenic, but they can tend to slow your progress (especially Route 33 East, despite AAA recommendations).
  If you are driving from the west. Cedar Lakes Crafts Center is located about three miles off Interstate-77 near Ripley, WV, south of Parkersburg, WV and north of Charleston, WV. If traveling from the west, drive through Columbus, OH on Interstate-70 and south on Interstate-77 to Ripley. Exit Interstate at Exit 132. At bottom of exit ramp, make a left turn on Route 21 north, go underneath interstate, make first right onto Cedar Lakes Drive. Cedar Lakes Conference Center will be 3 1/2 miles on right. From Louisville, KY, travel on Interstate-64 to Charleston and north on Interstate-77 to Ripley. Exit interstate at Exit 132. At bottom of exit ramp, make a right turn on Route 21 north, make immediate first right onto Cedar Lakes Drive. Cedar Lakes Conference Center will be 3 1/2 miles on right side of road. Day 2: General introduction. Discussion of early Ireland. Stone & Bronze Age Culture.
(Wednesday, October 23)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy home-style breakfast in Lakeview Dining Hall from 7:30 AM - 8:15 AM.
 Morning: Class begins at 9:00 AM. Early Ireland. Stone and Bronze Age Culture. The Iron Age and the arrival of the Celts. Relationships with the Scots. Myth and legend. Early Christianity and the arrival of the Anglo Normans. The spirit world of pre-Christian Ireland and its persistence in Irish culture. Colonialism and appropriation. The harp and uilleann pipes and other musical instruments.
 Lunch: Enjoy home-style lunch in Lakeview Dining Hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Class begins again at 1:30 PM. The afternoon lecture will take up where we left off in the morning session. Continues until 3:00 PM.
 Dinner: Enjoy home-style dinner in Lakeview Dining Hall from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.
 Evening: Evening entertainment in Holt Lodge meeting room at 7:00 PM.

 Morning: Class begins at 9:00 AM. Irish instrumental styles and repertoires. The social base of the music. Sean nos and other styles of singing. Song themes and topics; love and war. Songs of the sea. Songs of emigration and settlement in North Amreica. Songs and stories. Metaphors and symbols in lyrics and ballads. The emergence of Southern Applalchian music. Old-Time and Bluegrass traditions.
 Lunch: Enjoy home-style lunch in Lakeview Dining Hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Class begins again at 1:30 PM. The afternoon lecture will pick up where we left off in the morning session. Class will end at 3:00 PM.
 Dinner: Enjoy home-style dinner in Lakeview Dining Hall from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Day 4: Irish American Folk, popular and stage traditions.

 Morning: Class will begin at 9:00 AM. Irish American folk, popular and stage traditions. Minstrelsy. Harrigan, Hart and Braham and the beginnings of American Musical Theater. Stephen Foster, Dan Emmet and American popular song. Irish Music in vaudeville and early Tin Pan Alley. If It Wasn't for the Irish and the Jews. Irish social, competitive and show dance. Riverdance and other big Irish Dance shows since 1994. Relationship between music and dance.
 Lunch: Enjoy home-style lunch in Lakeview Dining Hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Class begins at 1:30 PM. We will pick up where we left off this morning. Class ends at 3:00 PM
 Dinner: Enjoy home-style dinner in Lakeview Dining Hall from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Day 5: Irish songs of revolution and protest.
(Saturday, October 26)
   
 Breakfast: Enjoy home-style breakfast in Lakeview Dining Hall from 7:30 AM - 8:15 AM.
 Morning: Class begins at 9:00 AM. Irish songs of revolution and protest. Songs of the Northern Ireland Peace Process. Modern Irish Music. The Irish European Classical Tradition. Rock, Punk and Indy. New Age and Celtic Fusions. The future of Irish music and dance. The emergence of Irish arts - literary, theatrical and musical - as cultural emblems in the global society.
 Lunch: Enjoy home-style lunch in Lakeview Dining Hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Class begins at 1:30 PM. We will pick up where we left off this morning. Class ends at 3:00 PM.
 Dinner: Banquet will begin at 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM and will be served to us by the friendly dining hall staff at Lakeview Dining Hall.
 Evening: We will end our week with a fabulous concert of Traditional Irish Music featuring Mick Moloney and friends. Concert starts at 7:00 PM.
