This class focuses on the native plants of southern OH, WV and VA. We will learn how to make soil from natural sources, to create raised beds and rock gardens, to germinate native plants from seed, and to design and plant natural landscapes. There will be botanical field trips to see and identify native wildflowers and grasses.

Nestled in the Appalachian foothills of the Ohio River Valley in the western part of the state, the county seat of Ripley features a historic downtown and theater and easy access to nearby areas of natural beauty, abundant wildlife and hiking trails.

Need to call in advance to arrange transportation to and from the airport to Cedar Lakes Conf Center. You may also wish to rent a car fro the week from the airport.

 
Driving Directions
  If you are traveling from the east. Cedar Lakes Crafts Center is located about 3 miles off I-77 near Ripley, WV, south of Parkersburg, WV and north of Charleston, WV. If you are traveling from the east, consider I-68 and Route 40 through Cumberland, MD to Morgantown, WV, south on I-79 to Clarksburg, west on Route 50 to Parkersburg, and south on I-77 to Ripley. Many of the by-ways off the interstate are quite scenic, but they can tend to slow your progress (especially Route 33 East, despite AAA recommendations).
  If you are traveling from the west. Cedar Lakes Crafts Center is located about 3 miles off I-77 near Ripley, WV, south of Parkersburg, WV and north of Charleston, WV. If traveling from the west, drive through Columbus, OH on I-70 and south on I-77 to Ripley. From Louisville, KY, travel on I-64 to Charleston and north on I-77 to Ripley. Many of the by-ways off of the interstate are quite scenic, but they can tend to slow your progress (especially Route 33, East, despite AAA recommendations).
Equipment Requirements: Students need to bring work/garden clothes, a garden trowel, camera, hiking boots, wildflower guide (Newcomb's Wildflower Guide by Lawrence Newcomb), notebook and pen.

Day 2: Class/Entertainment

 Breakfast: Breakfast is served in Lakeview dining hall from 7:30 AM - 8:15 AM.
 Morning: Class starts at 8:45 AM and ends at 4:30 PM.
 Lunch: Lunch is served at Lakeview dining hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Class starts at 1:15 PM and ends at 4:30 PM.
 Dinner: Dinner is served in Lakeview dining hall from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.
 Evening: Evening program will begin at 7:00 PM.

Day 3: Class/Open Studio
(Tuesday, August 20)
   
 Breakfast: Breakfast is served in Lakeview dining hall from 7:30 AM - 8:15 AM.
 Morning: Class will begin at 8:45 AM and end at 4:30 PM Class will be going on field trip most of the day.
 Lunch: Lunch will be a sack, picnic lunch while on the field trip.
 Afternoon: Class will continue in the afternoon on your field trip ending around 4:00 PM.
 Dinner: Dinner is served in Lakeview dining hall from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.
 Evening: Open studio will begin at 6:30 PM.

Day 4: Class/Entertainment

Day 5: Class/Review of All Projects
(Thursday, August 22)

 Lunch: Lunch will be served in Lakeview dining hall from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM.
 Afternoon: Class will begin at 1:15 PM and end at 4:30 PM.
 Dinner: Banquet will be served at 5:30 PM in Lakeview dining hall.
 Evening: At 6:30 PM we will do a walk through all classrooms to see what participants accomplished during the week.

Day 6: Final Class/Departures

 Lunch: Lunch will be served in Lakeview dining hall from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM. The program ends after lunch.
